Wing Walking $73.28 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Seen in airshows and barnstorming during the 1920s, wing walking is the act of moving on the wings of an airplane during flight. The beginning of air walkers The first wing walker to perform daring stunts was 26 year old Ormer Locklear. Legend has it that he first climbed out onto the lower wings during his pilot training in the Army Air Service during World War I. Undaunted, Ormer just climbed out of the cockpit onto the wings in flight whenever there was a mechanical issue and fixed the problem. On November 8, 1918, Locklear wowed the crowd at Barron Field, Texas with his dare devil wing walking stunts. Wing walking was seen as an extreme form of barnstorming, and wing walkers would constantly take up the challenge of outdoing one another. They themselves admitted (or rather proclaimed proudly) that the point of their trade was to make money on the audiences prospect of possibly watching someone die. Fighter Pilot $9.99 Please note:  This ebook edition does not include the photo insert from the print edition.   The widely anticipated memoir of legendary ace American fighter pilot, Robin Olds Robin Olds was a larger-than-life hero with a towering personality. A graduate of West Point and an inductee in the National College Football Hall of Fame for his All-American performance for Army, Olds was one of the toughest college football players at the time. In WWII, Olds quickly became a top fighter pilot and squadron commander by the age of 22—and an ace with 12 aerial victories. But it was in Vietnam where the man became a legend. He arrived in 1966 to find a dejected group of pilots and motivated them by placing himself on the flight schedule under officers junior to himself, then challenging them to train him properly because he would soon be leading them. Proving he wasn’t a WWII retread, he led the wing with aggressiveness, scoring another four confirmed kills, becoming a rare triple ace.   Olds (who retired a brigadier general and died in 2007) was a unique individual whose personal story is one of the most eagerly anticipated military books of the year. |

Test Pilot $12.59 <p>Test pilots – dashing and courageous young men or foolhardy gamblers? In this fully illustrated book written by the producer of the BBC1 television series of the same name, we follow the ups and downs of a group of trainee test pilots at Boscombe Down in Wiltshire.</p><p> </p><p> Beginning with the exacting selection procedure, we discover what personal and professional qualities a pilot needs in order to become a test pilot. Only six UK and twelve foreign students are chosen each year and, once selected, the pressure on them steadily mounts. As the students learn to push each aircraft’s performance to its limits they, too, are being mentally and physically stretched further than ever before. Training is given on both fixed – and rotary – wing aircraft and by the end of the course each student is fully conversant with the different techniques necessary to fly each type. They learn how to recover safely from spins, how to cope with sudden failures of equipment in mid-flight and how to land an aircraft with no power. All the time, they are assessing each aircraft’s capabilities and the scope of the on-board technology. The final part of the course is the ‘preview exercise’ when every student is required to evaluate an aircraft he has never flown before and to make a formal presentation to his tutors and examiners.</p><p> Using a number of remarkably frank interviews with students and tutors, Brian Johnson explores the process of becoming a test pilot and reveals both the stresses and successes of the year. The RAF has given its full support to both the book and the television programmes and thus has enabled Brian Johnson to produce a unique and authoritative account of the training for one of the most responsible and exciting jobs in modern aviation.</p> |

Star Wars ANH Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot Helmet 1:1 Replica $579.99 Full-scale Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot Helmet! The same headgear Luke wore in the exciting Death Star trench run! This prop replica comes from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Made using digital scans of an original X-wing helmet in the Lucasfilm archive. Includes a fully padded interior and removable, real-leather ear cups. Limited edition of only 750 pieces! This X-Wing Pilot Helmet comes from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. It’s a faithful recreation of the iconic headgear that Luke Skywalker wore in the exciting Death Star trench run in the epic battle of Yavin! Utilizing digital scans of an original X-wing helmet in the Lucasfilm archive and an actual APH-6B helmet, as well as castings of an original visor and chin cup, eFX’s engineers, model-makers, and artists painstakingly constructed the master patterns to produce this prop replica. The full-scale helmet replica is made of quality fiberglass, injection-molded plastic, and machined metal, with a fully padded interior and removable, real-leather ear cups. This beautiful reproduction is a limited edition of only 750 pieces worldwide that comes with a certificate of authenticity, eFX display base, and numbered plaque. The microphone is from a Racal Minilite headset. This is the same headset that Luke and Han wore when fighting the TIE fighters in their escape from the Death Star! In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Luke Skywalker was assigned the wing position of Red Five and flew his X-wing starfighter in the Battle of Yavin against the Empire’s mightiest weapon, the dreaded Death Star. Using all his skills as a bush pilot in Beggar’s Canyon on Tatooine, and with the Force now his ally, Luke maneuvered down the Death Star’s trench, evading enemy fire and even Darth Vader, to deliver the final devastating blow and became an unlikely hero of the Rebellion. The original helmet was made from an APH-6B Vietnam-era flight helmet used by the U.S. Navy, circa 1969. This helmet included the dual visor cover. A ridge was also added over the top, from front to back. The helmet was then cast in halves to make the master patterns, and the X-wing pilot helmets were vacuum formed from these patterns. Upon assembly, a strip of ABS was added to hide the parting line of the two halves. |

Star Wars: X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar $7.99 Book 9 in the exciting series! The X-wing fighter pilots have earned their reputation as the Rebel Alliance’s ultimate strike force by overwhelming enemies with their rapid-fire assaults. But now they are about to embark on a diplomatic mission that will prove to be even more hazardous than all-out combat…. The neutral world of Adumar has decided to pick a side in the war to control the galaxy. Delegates from both the New Republic and the Empire have been invited to Adumar, and each camp will be given a chance to plead its government’s case. But there is one small catch: since the Adumari prize military skill above all else, they insist that both delegations be composed exclusively of fighter pilots. For pilot Wedge Antilles and his company, it’s an unfamiliar exercise in diplomacy–and one that’s filled with unexpected peril. For once they arrive, the X-wing pilots are challenged by Adumar’s fierce warriors and attacked by Imperial assassins bent on eliminating all competition. But these challenges pale in comparison to the threat posed by a rogue Republic agent…one who is determined to win Adumar’s allegiance once and for all–even if it costs the X-wing pilots their lives. Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years! |

Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron $7.99 They are sleek, swift, and deadly. The are the X-wing fighters. And as the struggle rages across the vastness of space, the fearless men and women who pilot them risk both their lives and their machines. Their mission: to defend the Rebel Alliance against a still-powerful and battle-hardened Imperial foe in a last-ditch effort to control the stars! Its very name strikes fear into enemy hearts. So when Rebel hero Wedge Antilles rebuilds the legendary Rogue Squadron, he seeks out only the best — the most skilled, the most daring X-wing pilots. Through arduous training and dangerous missions, he weeds out the weak from the strong, assembling a group of hard-bitten warriors willing to fight, ready to die. Antilles knows the grim truth: that even with the best X-wing jockeys in the galaxy, many will not survive their near-suicidal missions. But when Rogue Squadron is ordered to assist in the assault on the heavily fortified Imperial stronghold of Black Moon, even the bravest must wonder if any at all will survive. . . .  Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years! |

Royal Naval Air Service Pilot 1914-18 $14.95 Osprey’s survey of the Royal Naval Air Service pilot during World War I (1914-1918). In 1914 the Naval Wing of the Royal Flying Corps was subsumed into the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). In 1915 the RNAS sent aircraft to support the operations in the Dardanelles, and also gave increasing support to the Royal Flying Corps units engaged on the Western Front, conducting reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and artillery spotting, bombing raids, and aerial combat with German pilots. On The Wing: To the Edge of the Earth with a Peregrine Falcon $7.37 <p>In this extraordinary naturalist adventure saga, Alan Tennant, a passionate student of wildlife and of the peregrine falcon in particular, endeavours to radio-track the bird’s transcontinental migration – something no one before him had ever attempted. At the time of his flight, in the mid-1980s, researchers were still unsure of the peregrine’s transcontinental path: chicks hatched in the Arctic have hardly been taught how to fly and kill their food when they make their first migration, alone, following some mysterious internal call to go south.</p><p> </p><p> <i>On The Wing</i>, which begins on the windswept flats of the Texas barrier islands, ferries us across multiple continents, and is loaded with historical and scientific lore and rich characters. Chief among them is George Vose, the septugenarian Second World War vet and former stunt pilot who becomes Tennant’s partner in falcon-chasing when they borrow some US Army radio-tracking equipment and set off after a bird Alan has managed to trap and tag with a feather-mounted transmitter. George, who trusts his instincts more than his instruments, is as obsessed with the mystery of flight as Tennant is and the book charts the story of their friendship. As they journey to the Arctic, following their first bird, and then way down South, through Mexico and into Belize, nearly losing their lives, running foul of the law (and, at times, at each other’s throats) in the race to keep their birds in view and their rattletrap Cessna gassed up and running. </p><p> </p><p> But the falcons dominate this odyssey, these majestic birds – the icons of pharaohs, oriental emperors, and European nobility – whose fierce mien, speed at the kill and solitary habits have fired the human imagination for centuries. In this mesmerising narrative Alan Tennant offers us an unforgettable and moving tale that speaks to all our dreams of flight.</p> |

AF5U Flying Pancake 1/27 Scale Model Aircraft $133.79 The brainchild of Charles H. Zimmerman, the F5U was intended to perform well as a fighter plane while being able to remain in flight at extremely low airspeed, making it easier to operate from carriers. The F5Us unusual appearance owed to a very low aspect ratio wing without a fuselage, which resulted in something looking like a flying saucer. This shape, combined with powerful engines driving large propellers, could plow through the air at low speed (40 mph!), since the whole airframe is immersed in the prop wash. The AF5U Flying Pancake was manufactured by Vought. It was a fighter aircraft and the brainchild of Charles Zimmerman during World War II. Its maiden flight was on the 23rd of November 1942 and its production was cancelled on the 17th of March 1947. The AF5U was the most unusual aircraft designed for the U.S. Navy. It consists of a flat, somewhat disk-shaped body with a very low aspect ratio wing without fuselage that looks like a flying saucer. The AF5U has two 1,600 hp Pratt and Whitney R-2000 radial engines. Its configuration was designed to have a low aspect ratio aircraft that will have a low takeoff and landing speed and high top speed. It can accommodate only one, the pilot; it has a length of 28 ft. 7 in.; wingspan of 32 ft. 6 in.; height of 14 ft. 9 in.; empty weight of 13,107 lbs., loaded weight of 16,722 lbs. and max takeoff weight of 18,772 lbs. It has a maximum speed of 425 mph; range of 1,064 miles; rate of climb 718 ft. per minute; and service ceiling of 34,492 ft. It has 6 x .50 machine guns or 4 x 20 mm machine guns or 2 x 1000 lb. bombs. Charles Lindbergh had successfully flown the first flight of the prototype, the V-173 and he was surprised that it was easy to handle. The aircrafts main problem was its gearbox which produces unacceptable amounts of vibration. Even though the design was really promising, the U.S. Navy came to a point where they had to switch from propeller driven planes to jet propelled planes. Dimensions: 12 L x 16 W x |

B-47 Stratojet Pilot’s Flight Operating Instructions $49.11 The Air Force”s first all-jet strategic bomber, the swept-wing Boeing B-47 Stratojet had a range of 3,500 nautical miles and a payload capacity of 20,000 pounds. It served as the mainstay of Strategic Air Command in the 1950s into the mid 1960s. The B-47 was an outgrowth of WWII research and development efforts, and the prototype aircraft first flew in December of 1947. The unique six-jet design featured twin engine pods on the wing near the fuselage, and one outboard. It also incorporated an elegant bicycle-type landing gear with two-wheel struts on the forward and aft fuselage and outrigger wheels. In 1956, over 1300 B-47s and 250 RB-47s were on alert. It was the high water mark for the aircraft, which was fully supplanted by the B-52 by 1967. This B-47 pilot”s flight operating handbook was originally produced by the USAF. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety. It provides a fascinating view inside the cockpit of one of history”s great planes. |

B-58A Hustler 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft $196.09 The Convair B-58 Hustler was the first operational jet bomber capable of Mach 2 supersonic flight and was developed for the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command in the late 1950s. The B-58 program started in February 1949. The B-58 design was the first true USAF supersonic bomber program. Its design was based on a delta wing with a leading-edge sweep of 60 degrees with four General Electric J79-GE-1 turbojet engines. It has a crew of three, the pilot, bombardier/navigator and defensive systems operator. The B-58 carries a single nuclear weapon in a streamlined MB-1C pod under the fuselage. The B-58 has a crew of three and has a maximum speed of Mach 2.1 The B-58 is extremely expensive and it was reported that each B-58As costs much more than its weight in gold. It is a complex aircraft requiring considerable maintenance, requiring specialized equipment. On January 16, 1970, the last B-58s in operational service retired and were replaced by the FB-111A. A total of 116 B-58s were produced; 30 trial aircraft and 86 production B-58A models. A number of B-58s were used for special trials of various kinds, and several variants such as the B-58B and B-58C were proposed by Convair but were never built. Dimensions: 16.75 L x 15 W x 6 H |

B200 Super King Air 1/32 Scale Model Aircraft $147.81 The Beechcraft Super King Air 200 is a twin-turboprop transport and utility aircraft. It is part of the King Air series, a family of aircraft that has been in continuous production since 1964, the longest production run of any civilian turboprop aircraft. The King Air line has outlasted all of its previous competitors, and as of 2006 is one of only two twin-turboprop business airplanes in production. Demand for a King Air with a greater capacity than the earlier models led to the development of the Super King Air 200. New features included a distinctive T-tail, more powerful engines, greater wing area and span, increased cabin pressurization, greater fuel capacity and higher operating weights compared to the Model 100. The aircraft was certificated in December 1973 with PT-6A-41 engines rated at 850 shp. The improved B200 model, with PT-6A-42 engines, entered production in 1981 and is still being produced today. It has a comfortable and roomy squared-oval pressurized cabin. The flight deck seats a crew of two and is fitted with dual controls although it can be flown by a single pilot. The Super King Air 200 first flew on October 27, 1972. In 1996, Super was dropped from the name and the aircraft became known as the King Air B200. Bessie Coleman $6.95 On My Own Biographies introduces beginning readers to some of history’s most interesting and important people. These books focus on the pivotal episodes that show what kind of person the subject is (or was) and how he or she came to be famous. Each book is written in a story format but is not a fictionalized account. A chronology of major events follows the story, along with a brief summary of the subject’s life. High in the sky, Bessie Coleman could soar like a bird. She was free–at least until she landed. As a black woman in the 1920s, she wasn’t allowed to learn how to fly. Forced to travel to France to learn, she became the first African American woman to earn her pilot’s license. Whether she was wing-walking, giving a speech, parachuting, or flying, Coleman inspired people with her bravery and resolve. |

Dolphin and Snipe Aces of World War 1 $10.54 This book focuses on the combat careers of the last of the famous Sopwith fighters to enter service during World War 1, the Dolphin and the Snipe, both of which were built on the strong scouting heritage of the Pup and Camel. The Dolphin featured the unique negative-staggered biplane wing arrangement, which provided the pilot with the best possible tactical view forward for seeking out his enemy. Used extensively on the Western Front, the Dolphin proved very effective in combat, with a substantial number of British aces scoring kills with the fighter. The Snipe was built as the successor of the highly successful Camel, and entered service with the fledgling Royal Air Force in the summer of 1918. Although seeing just a few months of action before the Armistice, the Snipe nevertheless proved its superiority over virtually all other fighters. |
