They were against the power of the armed forces being in the hands of one man. The War Powers Act and the Iraq War Declaration gutted the Constitution
Isn’t a shame liberals care more about demonizing Republicans than they do about restoring constitutional provisions?
Congress didn’t vote for a declaration of war on Iraq. They voted for transferring that authority to the executive. The War Powers Act is what gave the executive the power to send troops into combat without Congressional approval for a period of 60 days.
Under administrations from both parties, there has been a very intense effort to avoid declaring war because it changes the whole legal system and is an administrative nightmare. Plus, the rest of the world takes it VERY seriously. It has nothing to do with liberal or conservative, either.
The last formal declaration was 12/8/1941. Every Congress and President since has bent almost literally over backwards to avoid the situation. Our deep and malignant involvement in Viet Nam from 1958 to 1975 was the most horrifying result…but the rash of recent wars is equally disheartening.
Then there is the great difficulty of “declaring war on terrorism” when all precedent says such pronunciations MUST involve another sovereign nation, and our beef with Bin Laden carries the potential to take us many places outside Afghanistan. You’re right about Iraq, though. It was a cheap scam, based upon lies, wishful thinking, and ignorant propaganda strutting.
