What are your opinions on wars in general?
Which do you think is a more crueler war: back then during the civil wars vs. nowaday’s wars.
Please don’t just dot an answer, but support it.
War is inherently evil but I must say that wars have become “cleaner” and more “sanitary” over the years. This is not to say that they are no longer evil. As news about war spread more quickly and technologies such as video cameras have made it easier for people not involved in the war to see its effect politicians have created technologies that have made its effects more narrow. Examples of this are precision guided missiles and “smart bombs”. Also, land mines are used far less frequently. I do not think the U.S. or any member of NATO will use a nuclear bomb unless actually attacked with a nuclear bomb.

He’s one lean, mean, fighting machine! From the hand-painted animation model sheets of the animated micro-series Star Wars: Clone Wars, comes General Grievous. Each amazing piece comes matted, is 20-inches tall x 24-inches wide, and is hand numbered with a title plaque and official Lucasfilm certificate of authenticity. It’s a great gift for Grievous groupies! Limited edition of 300 pieces. Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) is an invented name for the process of making fine-art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word was coined to distinguish commonly known industrial “Iris proofs” from the fine-art prints artists were producing on the same printers. The name has since come to mean any high-quality, ink-jet print, and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such. In the past few years, the word (as a fine-art term) has come to be associated with prints using fade-resistant “archival” inks and the inkjet printers that use them. A wide variety of substrates are available, including various textures and finishes such as matte photo paper, watercolor paper, cotton canvas, or artist textured vinyl. Desktop Wars $79.66 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Software wars describes a state where software authors and users argue over which software is best for a purpose and should thus be used by everyone for that task. In March 1998, LiCheng Tai created a map, a general overview of the world of software as a computer graphic and titled it Software Wars. LiCheng Tai stopped updating it in 2003. It was updated by Steven Hilton in 2006. The detailed graphical index of market history shows past and ongoing market competitions between free software and proprietary software, including Microsoft and Apple Inc.. It is an example of the Evil Empire genre of humor that is endemic in hacker culture where Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is represented as the ruler of the Galactic Empire of the Star Wars movies or, as in this case, as one of the Borg of the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series. Guard Wars $22.95 An inventive study of relations between the National Guard and the Regular Army during World War II, Guard Wars follows the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 28th Infantry Division from its peacetime status through training and into combat in Western Europe. The broader story, spanning the years 1939–1945, sheds light on the National Guard, the U.S. Army, and American identities and priorities during the war years. Michael E. Obama’s Wars $9.99 In Obama’s Wars Bob Woodward provides the most intimate and sweeping portrait yet of the young president as commander in chief. Drawing on internal memos classified documents meeting notes and hundreds of hours of interviews with most of the key players including the president Woodward tells the inside story of Obama making the critical decisions on the Afghanistan War the secret campaign in Pakistan and the worldwide fight against terrorism. At the core of Obama’s Wars is the unsettled division between the civilian leadership in the White House and the United States military as the president is thwarted in his efforts to craft an exit plan for the Afghanistan War. "So what’s my option?" the president asked his war cabinet seeking alternatives to the Afghanistan commander’s request for 40 000 more troops in late 2009. "You have essentially given me one option. …It’s unacceptable." "Well " Secretary of Defense Robert Gates finally said "Mr. President I think we owe you that option." It never came. An untamed Vice President Joe Biden pushes relentlessly to limit the military mission and avoid another Vietnam. The vice president frantically sent half a dozen handwritten memos by secure fax to Obama on the eve of the final troop decision. President Obama’s ordering a surge of 30 000 troops and pledging to start withdrawing U.S. forces by July 2011 did not end the skirmishing. General David Petraeus the new Afghanistan commander thinks time can be added to the clock if he shows progress. "I don’t think you win this war " Petraeus said privately. "This is the kind of fight we’re in for the rest of our lives and probably our kids’ lives." Hovering over this debate is the possibility of another terrorist attack in the United States. The White House led a secret exercise showing how unprepared the government is if terrorists set off a nuclear bomb in an American city which Obama told Woodward is at the top of the list of what he worries about all the time. Verbatim quotes from secret debates and White House strategy sessions and firsthand accounts of the thoughts and concerns of the president his war council and his generals reveal a government in conflict often consumed with nasty infighting and fundamental disputes. Woodward has discovered how the Obama White House really works showing that even more tough decisions lie ahead for the cerebral and engaged president. Obama’s Wars offers the reader a stunning you-are-there account of the president his White House aides military leaders diplomats and intelligence chiefs in this time of turmoil and danger. |

LeMay: The Life and Wars of General Curtis LeMay $20.19 Kozak’s biography of U.S. Air Force General Curtis E. LeMay (1906–1990) won’t convert those utterly convinced that he was a bomb-happy maniac. The more open-minded, however, will find in it a broader perspective on this controversial officer than we have had elsewhere. His outstanding competence as leader and organizer of strategic airpower in World War II and during the cold war is convincingly presented; so are his limitations in the Pentagon and his poor judgment in being George Wallace’s running mate in 1968. Kozak suggests that LeMay was utterly dedicated to the mission of destroying his country’s enemies and to the men under his command charged with carrying out that mission. This led to what can only be called a certain lack of the social graces and a good many of what might charitably be called misinterpretations of where LeMay’s patriotism led him. A book that definitely belongs in aviation and modern military history collections. |

Wars Against Napoleon Debunking The Myth Of The Napoleonic Wars $6.99 Popular and scholarly history presents a one-dimensional image of Napoleon as an inveterate instigator of war who repeatedly sought large-scale military conquests. General Franceschi and Ben Weider dismantle this false conclusion in The Wars Against Napoleon a brilliantly written and researched study that turns our understanding of the French emperor on its head.Avoiding the simplistic clichés and rudimentary caricatures many historians use when discussing Napoleon Franceschi and Weider argue persuasively that the caricature of the megalomaniac conqueror who bled Europe white to satisfy his delirious ambitions and insatiable love for war is groundless. By carefully scrutinizing the facts of the period and scrupulously avoiding the sometimes confusing cause and effect of major historical events they paint a compelling portrait of a fundamentally pacifist Napoleon one completely at odds with modern scholarly thought. This rigorous intellectual presentation is based upon three principal themes. The first explains how an unavoidable belligerent situation existed after the French Revolution of 1789. The new France inherited by Napoleon was faced with the implacable hatred of reactionary European monarchies determined to restore the ancient regime. All-out war was therefore inevitable unless France renounced the modern world to which it had just painfully given birth. The second theme emphasizes Napoleon’s determined efforts ("bordering on an obsession " argue the authors) to avoid this inevitable conflict. The political strategy of the Consulate and the Empire was based on the intangible principle of preventing or avoiding these wars not on conquering territory. Finally the authors examine conflict by conflict the evidence that Napoleon never declared war. As he later explained at Saint Helena it was he who was always attacked not the other way around. His adversaries pressured and even forced the Emperor to employ his unequalled military genius. After each of his memorable victories Napoleon offered concessions often extravagant ones to the defeated enemy for the sole purpose of avoiding another war. Lavishly illustrated persuasively argued and carefully illustrated with original maps and battle diagrams The Wars Against Napoleon presents a courageous and uniquely accurate historical idea that will surely arouse vigorous debate within the international historical community. |

Wars of the Irish Kings $19.99 For the first thousand years of its history, Ireland was shaped by its monasteries and its wars. The artistic flourishing of the monasteries has received a good deal of attention, but the violent and varied wars have in recent years gone unremembered. In Wars of the Irish Kings , David Willis McCullough has turned back to the earliest accounts of these struggles to present a rich tapestry of Ireland’s fight for its identity. Beginning with the legends of ancient wars and warriors, moving through a time when history and storytelling were not separate crafts, into a time when history was as much propaganda as fact, Wars of the Irish Kings tells of tribal battles, foreign invasions, Viking raids, family feuds, wars between rival Irish kingdoms, and wars of rebellion against the English. This collection is peopled with familiar names: Cuchulain, Finn MacCool, Brian Boru, Mad King Sweeney, Strongbow, Edward and Robert Bruce, Queen Elizabeth I and Lord Essex, Hugh O’Donnell, and Hugh O’Neill. Battles formed the legends and history of the land: the Da Dannan meet the Fir Bolgs near Sligo, Brian Boru faces the Vikings at Clontarf in Dublin Bay, High King Rory O’Connor confronts the English invaders near Waterford, O’Briens battle the English (and other O’Briens) at Dysert O’Dea near Limerick, guns are carried for the first time in battle at Knockdoe near Galway, the Bruces from Scotland and their Irish allies overwhelm the English at Connor in Ulster, and Hugh O’Neill ambushes General Bagenal near Armagh. The book ends near Cork in 1601 when the English defeat O’Neill and his Spanish allies at Kinsale. Common people as well as kings appear in these pages. A foot soldier in the early days of gunpowder accidentally sets off a disastrous explosion, a harper’s disembodied head is sent by error to the king of England, who displays it as that of the king of Ireland, and a Welsh camp follower named Alice is given the job of executing Irish captives during the English invasion. The sources for these stories and many more range from ancient manuscripts telling of mythical battles to a seventeenth-century siege diary. There are excerpts from such Irish literary masterpieces as The Cattle Raid of Cooley (The Tain), the monumental Annals of the Four Masters, passages from Gerald of Wales’s account of the English conquest in the twelfth century, pages from an Icelandic saga, and even a blistering letter from Queen Elizabeth I to her inept commander in Ireland ("You do but piece up a hollow peace . . . "). The result is a surprisingly immediate and stunning portrait of an all-but-forgotten time that forged the Ireland to come. From the Hardcover edition. |

A History of Modern Wars of Attrition $139 A war of attrition is usually conceptualized as a bloody slogging match, epitomized by imagery of futile frontal assaults on the Western Front of the First World War. As such, many academics, politicians, and military officers currently consider attrition to be a wholly undesirable method of warfare. This first book-length study of wars of attrition challenges this viewpoint. A historical analysis of the strategic thought behind attrition demonstrates that it was often implemented to conserve casualties, not to engage in a bloody senseless assault. Moreover, attrition frequently proved an effective means of attaining a state’s political aims in warfare, particularly in serving as a preliminary to decisive warfare, reducing risk of escalation, and coercing an opponent in negotiations. Malkasian analyzes the thought of commanders who implemented policies of attrition from 1789 to the present. His study includes figures central to the study of war, such as the Duke of Wellington, Carl von Clausewitz, B. H. Liddell Hart, General William Slim, General Douglas MacArthur, General Matthew Ridgeway, and General William Westmoreland. While special attention is devoted to the Second World War in the Pacific and the Korean War, this study notes the utility of attrition during the Cold War, as the risk of a Third World War rendered more aggressive strategies unattractive. Increasingly, the United States finds itself facing conflicts that are not amenable to a decisive military solution in which opponents seek prolonged war that will inflict as many casualties as possible on American forces. |

Mr. Lincoln’s Wars $9.99 In this highly ambitious collection, Adam Braver explores Abraham Lincoln’s inner life and personal turmoils — while also reflecting on the indelible impact Lincoln had on the nation during the last year of his presidency. Braver brings the president to life, not just as the strong and resilient leader of history books but also as a grief-stricken father, heartbroken over the loss of his young son. Across a rich canvas of truth and imagination, Mr. Lincoln’s Wars reveals a president within the White House walls. We see Lincoln as he explores the meaning of loss through a chance encounter with the father of a slain soldier. And a good-hearted young Union soldier is quickly turned into a killer in the name of President Lincoln. Finally, there is the assassination and the autopsy, as seen through the eyes of John Wilkes Booth, Mary Lincoln, the assistant surgeon general, and one of Lincoln’s closest friends. Brilliant in its depiction of the country during the waning days of the war, this book is an insightful and moving exploration of the myth of celebrity and the passions it arouses. More than anything, Mr. Lincoln’s Wars introduces a talented new writer whose storytelling ability knows no bounds. |

Trajans Dacian Wars $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Dacian Wars (101102, 105106) were two brief wars between the Roman Empire and Dacia during Emperor Trajans rule. The conflict was a result of raiding across the Danube by Dacians in 86 AD into the south bank Danubian Roman Province of Moesia. Trajan turned his attention to Dacia, an area north of Macedon and Greece and east of the Danube that had been on the Roman agenda since before the days of Caesar when they had beaten a Roman army at the Battle of Histria. In AD 85, the Dacians had swarmed over the Danube and pillaged Moesia and initially defeated an army the Emperor Domitian sent against them, but the Romans were victorious in the Battle of Tapae in AD 88 and a truce was drawn up. Emperor Trajan recommenced hostilities against Dacia and, following an uncertain number of battles, defeated the Dacian general Decebalus in the Second Battle of Tapae in 101. How Wars Are Won $11.99 Even as we head into twenty-first-century warfare, thirteen time-tested rules for waging war remain relevant. Both timely and timeless, How Wars Are Won illuminates the thirteen essential rules for success on the battlefield that have evolved from ancient times until the present day. Acclaimed military historian Bevin Alexander’s incisive and vivid analyses of famous battles throughout the ages show how the greatest commanders—from Alexander the Great to Douglas MacArthur—have applied these rules. For example: • Feign retreat: Pretend defeat, fake a retreat, then ambush the enemy while being pursued. Used to devastating effect by the North Vietnamese against U.S. forces during the Vietnam War. • Strike at enemy weakness: Avoid the enemy’s strength entirely by refusing to fight pitched battles, a method that has run alongside conventional war from the earliest days of human conflict. Brilliantly applied by Mao Zedong to defeat the Chinese Nationalists. • Defend, then attack: Gain possession of a superior weapon or tactical system, induce the enemy to launch a fruitless attack, then go on the offensive. Employed repeatedly against the Goths by the Eastern Roman general Belisarius to reclaim vast stretches of the Roman Empire. The lessons of history revealed in these pages can be used to shape the strategies needed to win the conflicts of today. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

France Between the Wars: Gender and Politics $63.65 France Between the Wars challenges a prevailing assumption that women had little influence or power in France during the interwar period. Sian Reynolds shows how women in fact had both autonomy and authority within the political arena through their activities in social work, peace movements and strikes, and in other areas less directly linked with conventional politics. Reynolds brings together two kinds of history: the political history of France between the wars as it appears in general textbooks, and the work carried out in womens history covering the same period. In doing so she creates a history in which gender contributes in new ways to historical analysis. The book is not, however, concerned exclusively with critical hariography. It is also the result of the authors and others recent empirical and archival research. As such, it is a book which will appeal to both those studying French history and womens history. Author: Reynolds, Sian Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 296 Publication Date: 1996/08/15 Language: English Dimensions: 9.20 x 6.34 x 0.85 inches |

The Life and Wars of Gideon J. Pillow $26 One of nineteenth-century America’s most controversial military figures, Gideon Johnson Pillow gained notoriety early in the Civil War for turning an apparent Confederate victory at Fort Donelson into an ignominious defeat. Dismissed by contemporaries and historians alike as a political general with dangerous aspirations, his famous failures have overshadowed the tremendous energy, rare talent, and great organizational skills that also marked his career. In this exhaustive biography, Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes Jr. and Roy P. Stonesifer Jr. look beyond conventional historical interpretations to provide a full and nuanced portrait of this provocative and maligned man. While noting his arrogance, ambition, and very public mistakes, Hughes and Stonesifer give Pillow his due as a gifted attorney, first-rate farmer, innovator, and man of considerable political influence. One of Tennessee’s wealthiest planters, Pillow promoted scientific methods to improve the soil, preached crop diversification to reduce the South’s dependence on cotton, and endorsed railroad construction as a means to develop the southern economy. He helped secure the 1844 Democratic nomination for his friend and fellow Tennessean James K. Polk and was rewarded after Polk’s victory with an appointment as brigadier general. While his role in the Mexican War earned him a reputation for recklessness and self-promotion, his organization of what would become the Army of Tennessee put him at the forefront of the Confederate war effort. After the disaster at Donelson, he spent the rest of the war directing Confederate conscription in the West and leading Rebel cavalry forces—a role of continuing service which, the authors show, has been insufficiently acknowledged. Updated with a new foreword by noted Civil War scholar Timothy D. Johnson, The Life and Wars of Gideon J. Pillow portrays a colorful, enigmatic general who moved just outside the world of greatness he longed to enter. Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes Jr. is the author or editor of twenty books relating to the American Civil War, including Refugitta of Richmond; Brigadier General Tyree H. Bell, C.S.A.: Forrest’s Fighting Lieutenant ; and Yale’s Confederates . The late Roy P. Stonesifer Jr. was a professor of history at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. |

American Indian Wars $5.99 At the beginning of the 1840s the proud tribes of the North American Indians looked across the plains at the seemingly unstoppable expansion of the white man’s West. During the decades of conflict that followed, as the new world pushed onward, the Indians saw their way of life disappear before their eyes. Over the next 40 years they clung to a dream of freedom and a continuation of their traditions, a dream that was repeatedly shattered by the whites. This Pocket Essential Guide charts the savage series of battles, treacheries, massacres and ambushes that shaped those turbulent years. It recounts all the key engagements, from the Minnesota Massacre to the Battle of Wounded Knee, often using eyewitness reports of the time. It also offers an in-depth analysis of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and attempts to separate the tall tales from the truth. This essential guide provides notes on the historical context, the reasons behind the bloodshed and the tragic consequences for the Indians. In addition there are biographies of the key figures from both sides, including General’s Crook and Custer, and their Indian adversaries Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Crazy Horse. Also included are a chronology of events, a map and a resources section making this a valuable introduction for students of the period. |

A Brief History of Central America $151.11 Spanning three thousand years of civilization, A Brief History of Central America presents a short but comprehensive history of this often volatile region of the world. It begins with the early pre-Columbian cultures and concludes with the political and economic challenges currently facing the seven nations that share the isthmus: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and PanamaWritten for a general audience, the history focuses on key events and broad cultural patterns that have shaped the region. Special themes are developed throughout the book, revealing a great variety of human experience and exposing the contrasts that exist among the Central American nations, including: — The causes of unity and disunity on the isthmus– Economic pressures on the rain forests from farming and tourism– The fate of indigenous peoples and their cultures since the Spanish Conquest.A Brief History of the Central America is unique in its use of the latest data — such as information on the end of the recent civil wars and the translation of Maya hieroglyphs — and ethnohistoric and literary materials to help readers gain insight into the region’s diverse cultures. |

A Century of Ambivalence $26.83 A century ago the Russian Empire contained the largest Jewish community in the world, numbering about five million people. Today, the Jewish population of the former Soviet Union has dwindled to half a million, but remains probably the world’s third largest Jewish community. In the intervening century the Jews of that area have been at the center of some of the most dramatic events of modern history — two world wars, revolutions, pogroms, political liberation, repression, and the collapse of the USSR. They have gone through tumultuous upward and downward economic and social mobility and experienced great enthusiasms and profound disappointments. In startling photographs from the archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and with a lively and lucid narrative, A Century of Ambivalence traces the historical experience of Jews in Russia from a period of creativity and repression in the second half of the 19th century through the paradoxes posed by the post-Soviet era. This redesigned edition, which includes more than 200 photographs and two substantial new chapters on the fate of Jews and Judaism in the former Soviet Union, is ideal for general readers and classroom use. |

A Concise History Of Bulgaria $28.24 Richard Crampton presents a general introduction to Bulgaria at the cross-roads of Christendom and Islam. This concise history traces the country’s growth from pre-history, through its days as the center of a powerful medieval empire and five centuries of Ottoman rule, to the political upheavals of the twentieth century which led to three wars. It highlights 1995 to 2004, a vital period during which Bulgaria endured financial meltdown, set itself seriously on the road to reform, elected its former King as prime minister, and finally secured membership in NATO and admission to the European Union. A History Of China $88 It has been said that the twenty-first century will be China”s century. Such a remark highlights the importance of being informed about China”s long and tumultuous history. J.A.G. Roberts traces the main course of that history, from the earliest times, through the centuries of imperial government, to the present day. Chapters on China”s imperial history identify the main political and economic changes, whilst introducting key social themes. Turning to the modern period, Roberts then traces the dramatic evenuts of the Opium Wars, the 1911 Revolution and the Republican era. The book ends with a detailed discussion of China under Communist rule and a wide-ranging review of new developments, including China”s economic achievements and its costs. Thoroughly revised and expanded in the light of the latest research, and now featuring a helpful chronology, this up-to-date, authoritative overview of China”s past is ideal for students and general readers alike. |
