Patricia Neal changed her name, because another actress was named that, but why did she chose Fannie Flagg?
The name we chose for ourselves would often be different than what our parents named us. The name we chose would likely have a certain deep meaning to us. Writers especially always use names as keys to the nature of the character. Why did Fannie Flagg chose that name? I am a fan of hers and read up on all her work; she has an iconoclastic sense of humor and loves individualism, so????
Apparently her grandfather suggested the first name, and her friend Mary Hurt came up with the surname.

The USS Flier $21.95 The fate of the USS Flier is one of the most heroic stories of the Second World War. On August 13, 1944, the submarine struck a mine and sank to the bottom of the Sulu Sea in less than one minute, leaving only fourteen of its eighty-six crewmen alive. After enduring eighteen hours in the water, the eight remaining survivors swam to a remote island controlled by the Japanese. Deep in enemy territory and without food or drinking water, the crewmen soon realized that their struggle for survival had just begun. Noted historian Michael Sturma’s vivid recounting of the harrowing story of the USS Flier has all the elements of a classic World War II survival tale: sudden disaster, physical deprivation, a ruthless enemy, friendly guerrillas, and a dramatic escape from behind enemy lines. The eight sailors who survived the disaster became the first Americans of the Pacific conflict to escape from a sunken submarine and return safely to the United States. Though some of the Flier’s mysteries remain with the submarine beneath the sea, this account sheds light on the nature of underwater warfare and naval protocol and demonstrates the high degree of cooperation that existed among submariners, coast watchers, and guerrillas in the Philippines. Sturma fills a historical gap by detailing this important episode of the Second World War. |

For Student Series Novels: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg $8.99 Most often described as folksy, Pulitzer Prize-nominated Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, written by comedian and actress Fannie Flagg, spent thirty-six weeks at number two on the best-seller charts. At heart a love story about Ruth and Idgie, Flagg’s novel is often listed among the great novels written by women. Reviewers often compare the novel to Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegone Days or Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. In an interview with Samuel S. Vaughan, Flagg said, “Strangely enough, the first character in Fried Green Tomatoes was the café, and the town. I think a place can be as much a character in a novel as the people.” The actual writing of the novel, however, began when Flagg received a shoebox full of items once belonging to her Aunt Bess who, like Idgie, owned a café near the railroad tracks. Flagg developed the story through countless hours of interviews with old-timers. The story of the town, composed of news clippings, narration, and Mrs. Threadgoode’s reminiscences, is told to Evelyn Couch, a woman having a mid-life identity crisis and awakening to a sense of feminism. Evelyn finds therapeutic help in the stories of Mrs. Threadgoode about life in Whistle Stop during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. |

USS Commodore (Sp1425) $92.4 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The second USS Commodore (SP1425) was an armed motorboat that served in the United States Navy as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919. The U.S. Navy acquired her in October 1917 for World War I service. She was commissioned as USS Commodore (SP1425) in midNovember 1917. She spent much of her naval career in Florida waters. Due to an urgent need for craft such as Commodore at Brest, France, an order dated 14 October 1918 went out from Washington, D.C., to Boston, Massachusetts, directing the Commandant of the 1st Naval District to ready six section patrol boats Commodore, USS Cossack (SP695), USS War Bug (SP1795), USS Sea Hawk (SP2365), USS Kangaroo (SP1284), and USS SP729 to be shipped along with spare parts to keep them operational to France as deck cargo. However, this proposed movement appears to have been cancelled, probably because of the armistice with Germany of 11 November 1918 that ended World War I and eliminated the need for more U.S. Navy patrol craft in Europe.
