Ron and Alex. Thank you both for clear concise answers. I have a standard answer when the subjct of Dresden comes up. To those of you who have read my answer before I apologise.
To those of you who haven`t please read to the end for the facts I have gleaned from 30 years of research using numerous authors and the Public ecords Office at Kew.
The biggest problem with dealing with the matter of the bombing of Germany is that it is judged against modern morals and standards of behaviour.
Civilians have suffered during war from the beginning of time. When the barbarians sacked Rome they slaughtered men women and children. When the French stormed Spanish towns during the peninsular war the citizens inside were killed and the towns raped and pillaged. The powers during the 19th century and the early 20th laid down ever more stringent rules about conduct during war trying to prevent these excesses but until the Geneva Convention came along there were no hard and fast “rules of war”.
In 1945 the Geneva Convention did not prohibit the general bombing of a town to destroy its industrial capacity.
We have to look at Dresden in the light of the morality of the time.
Some people in Dresden and elsewhere claim that the Bombing of Dresden by the RAF AND the USAAF is a war crime. In my opinion it was not
I am not in any way denying the fact that what happened in Dresden was horrific and appalling. I do deny that the men who undertook the mission have any crime to answer for.
The bombing of Dresden has been used since 1945 as a tool to beat the RAF about its conduct of “terror bombing” during WW2.
The bombing of an industrialized town from the air in an attempt to destroy its industry or cause such loss of morale amongst its inhabitants that they ceased to work was NOT a crime by the Rules of War in 1945. The bombing of Coventry, London and other British Cities in 1940 and 1941 was also NOT a War Crime.
Within Europe we did not have the “industrial areas” afforded to towns in the New World. The factories were in and around the areas where the workforce lived. One side of the street would be the factory wall; the other side of the street would be the workers houses. Unfortunately this lead to what, nowadays, is called “collateral damage”
Dresden burned so heavily for several reasons.
It was a medieval city with many wooden buildings.
There had been a dry winter in the region which meant many buildings were tinderboxes.
The population were not used to air raids and did not therefore have the knowledge that you need to put incendiaries out quickly
The raid had little opposition because its Anti aircraft defence had been taken away by the Germans for use on the Eastern front. Therefore the bombers were able to put their loads in a concentrated space with little or no opposition.
Dresden was not “chosen for destruction”. This was a raid on an industrial centre which went exactly right with horrifying consequences due to many circumstances some of which I have listed above.
Why did so many people die?
The 35000 people that died (absolute top number using all available, reliable sources) did so because of the reasons above and the fact that Dresden’s Air Raid Precautions were appallingly bad. There were few, if any, properly constructed public shelters despite money having been allocated for them which was spent by the local burghers on Air Raid shelters for their homes in the suburbs.
People therefore sheltered in basements of houses which, due to the firestorm above filled with noxious fumes and killed the occupants before the houses collapsed onto them and burned their corpses.
Many people have claimed in the last 60 odd years that Dresden was a quiet peaceable town going about its business and waiting for the war to end. Read the paragraphs below which are taken from research by myself and many others for the truth about “quiet, peaceable, nothing to do with the war” Dresden.
In early 1945 the war was far from over. The Allies were still camped outside the borders of Germany, V2 rockets were still falling. The Allies had just fought the battle of the Bulge where the supposedly defeated Germans suddenly punched a huge hole in the Allied lines, German Rocket and Jet aircraft were coming off the production lines and proceeding to rip the hell out of the allied air fleets.
It was an operation undertaken due to many reasons.
1. A request from the Russians at the Yalta conference in February
1945. General Antonov “We want the Dresden railway junction bombed”
Meeting between the Chiefs of staff as reported by an interpreter. Records kept at the Public Records office in Kew
2. It was a German base of operations against Marshall Koniev`s left flank as he advanced into Germany. (See above)
Captured German High Command documents from Berlin in 1945 state that “Dresden is to be fortified as a military strongpoint, to be held at all costs.” These statements are also backed up by decrypts from Ultra at Bletchley Park.
3. Munitions storage in the old Dresden Arsenal.
4. Troop reinforcement and transport centre shifting an average 28
troop trains through the marshalling yards every day. Intelligence from Russian and other sources stored in the Public Records office in Kew
5. Communications centre. Most of the telephone lines connecting
High Command to the Eastern front went through Dresden.
6. Quote from The Dresden Chamber of Commerce 1944. “The work rhythm of Dresden is determined by the needs of our army.”
There were 127 factories in the Dresden Municipal area. The most
famous of these was Zeiss the celebrated camera and optics maker. In 1945 it was turning out Bomb aiming apparatus and Time fuses. (If you think the Dresden China Works making those lovely shepherdesses are more famous, they are actually made in Meisen 12Km down the River and always have been.)
A factory that previously made Typewriters and sewing machines was making Guns and ammunition
The Waffle and Marzipan machine manufacturer was producing torpedoes for the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe.
The arts and crafts workshops in the old town were using their woodworking skills to make the tail assemblies for V-1s.
Other factories were turning out such non warlike goods as Searchlights, Aircraft components, Field Telephones and 2 way radios.
Yet another quote, “Anyone who knows Dresden only as a cultural city would be very surprised to be made aware of the extensive and versatile activity that make Dresden ONE OF THE FOREMOST INDUSTRIAL LOCATIONS OF THE REICH. (My Capitals)

The men who carried out these acts did so in the desire to make a world in which their descendants and countrymen, of whom I am one, could live in freedom from persecution and with a freedom to ask questions and form their own opinions. In October 1945 during Operation Backfire a small number of V2 missiles were assembled by the British and launched three of them from a site in northern Germany. Operation Paperclip recruited German engineers to the US and Special Mission V2 transported V2 parts to White Sands Proving Grounds. The USSR also captured a number of V2s and staff. After the war V2s launched in secret may have been responsible for Ghost Rockets wherein unexplained objects crossed the skies over Sweden and Finland. Based on the chassis of the famous Panzer III, the StuG III began life as an infantry support weapon, but by the end of the war it had developed into an effective tank destroyer. One of the earlier variants of the StuG III was the Ausf.C, which was identified by an improved superstructure that eliminated a shot trap near the gunner’s view port. A total of 50 StuG III Ausf.C vehicles, each weighing 20.2 tons and featuring a 7.5cm StuK37 L/24 gun, were produced between May and September of 1941. Dragon’s latest Orange Box combo set includes a 1/35 scale StuG III Ausf.C, although the kit has a notable difference in that it mounts a 7.5cm StuK40 L/48 main armament instead of the original L/24 gun. Commissioned on 25 July 1940, this US Navy destroyer was the lead ship of a class widely used in WWII. The name of the destroyer stems from that of Admiral William S. Benson (1855-1932). Dragon s earlier kit (Item No.1032) showed the destroyer as it was configured in 1945. At this time USS Benson had completed naval operations in the Mediterranean Sea, and in May of that year the destroyer had then been transferred to the Pacific Ocean theater until the end of WWII. This latest 1/350 scale kit from Dragon shows the same destroyer, but this time in its original configuration shortly after its commissioning in 1940 at the Boston Navy Yard. Its shakedown period was in the Caribbean. Remembering that the USA was not yet at war in 1940, USS Benson commenced neutrality patrols in the Atlantic in November of that year. Such was the popularity of the original kit of this destroyer, that Dragon has launched this additional kit of the destroyer in its early life. It may be the same ship, but the kit has quite a different setup. An abundant assortment of brand new parts includes a replacement hull made by slide molds. A completely new hull was called for due to important differences from that of Item No.1032. The aft superstructure and deck are also new, as is the main mast with its crow s nest. Its function is belied by the prominent frame antenna that was mounted above the hull. This radio allowed it to stay in touch with roving reconnaissance vehicles on the battlefield. A total of 550 Sd.Kfz.223 vehicles were made between 1935 and 1944. As on the Sd.Kfz.221, a machine gun was installed in the small turret. V-2 Wehrmacht 1/32 Scale Model Aircraft $120.5 The V-2 rocket was the first ballistic missile and the first man-made object to achieve sub-orbital spaceflight. The first V-2 rocket to reach operational status was Batterie 444 and on September 2, 1944, they formed up to launch attacks on Paris and eventually set up in Houffalize in Belgium. There were hundreds of V-2s launched that blew up in mid-flight and never made it into allied statistics. On March 27, 1945, the last British civilian killed was Mrs. Ivy Millichamp, 34, in her home in Elm Grove, Orpington and an estimated 2,754 were killed in London by V-2 attacks with another 6,523 injured, which is just two people killed per V-2 rocket. The V-2, despite being one of the most advanced weapons in WWII, it was militarily ineffective as it lacked a proximity fuse, so it couldnt be set for air burst. The V-2s undeniable value, despite its over-all ineffectiveness, was in its novelty as a weapon which set the stage for the next 50 years of ballistic military rocketry, culminating with ICBMs during the Cold War. At the end of World war II, many V-2 rockets were retrieved by the United States and the USSR. There were three hundred trainloads of V-2s, and parts were captured and shipped to the United States and 126 principal designers both Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger were in American hands. In October 1945, during Operation Backfire, a small number of V-2 missiles were assembled by the British who launched three of them from a site in northern Germany. Operation Paperclip recruited German engineers to the US and a Special Mission V-2 transported V-2 parts to White Sands Proving Grounds. The USSR also captured a number of V-2s and staff. After the war, V-2s launched in secret may have been responsible for Ghost Rockets, wherein unexplained objects crossed the skies over Sweden and Finland. VS-44 American Export Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft $132.17 The Sikorsky VS-44 was a large four-engine flying boat built to compete in the transatlantic air travel trade carrying 40 or more passengers across the Atlantic Ocean. Sikorskys standard of luxury boasted full-length beds, dressing rooms, a full galley, a snack bar, a lounge, and fully controlled ventilation. American Export Airlines (AEA) ordered three VS-44s. They were named Excalibur, Excambian, and Exeter. World War II began and put civilian transatlantic air service on hold. Now under a Navy contract and with the Navy designation JR2S-1, AEAs three VS-44s continued flying between New York, New York and Foynes, Ireland, carrying passengers, freight and war material. Excalibur, the first VS-44, crashed on takeoff in 1942. After the war, the two remaining VS-44s continued to fly for the airline, which had been renamed American Overseas Airlines (AOA). AOA sold Excambian in 1949 to Tampico Airlines. In 1946 Exeter was sold to TACI of Montevideo, Uruguay. It crashed on August 15, 1947 while landing in River Plate off Montevideo. In 1976, Excambian was donated to the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola, Florida and eventually put on permanent loan to the New England Air Museum (NEAM) in Connecticut. WWII ELCO 80′ PT-109 Torpedo Boat 1/40 Scale Model $566.7 The PT-109 boat was commanded by 35th United States President John F. Kennedy, an Elco PT-103 class torpedo boat. During World War II, The Elco boats were the largest PT boats operated by the United States Navy. At 80 feet (24 m) and 40 tons, they had strong wooden hulls of 2-inch (5 cm) mahogany planking. Powered by three 12-cylinder 1,500hp (1100 kW) Packard gasoline engines (one per propeller shaft), their designed top speed was 41 knots (76 km/h). For space and weight-distribution reasons, the center engine was mounted with the output end facing forward, with power transmitted to the propeller shaft through a V-drive gearbox. Because the center propeller was deeper, it left less of a wake, and was preferred by skippers for low-wake loitering. The engines were fitted with mufflers in the stern to direct the exhaust under water, which had to be bypassed for high speed. These were used not only to mask their own noise from the enemy but to be able to hear enemy aircraft, which were rarely detected overhead before dropping their bombs. The only completely restored 80 Elco PT-boat in existence, PT 617, is on display at the Battleship Cove Museum in Fall River, Massachusetts.
