Would the detonation of a nuclear weapon with a yield of 1600 megatons be enough to end life on Planet Earth?
Would the detonation of a nuclear weapon with a yield of 1600 megatons be enough to effectively end life on Earth? A bomb, no matter how big enough cannot envelop an entire planet obviously, but I was thinking more in terms of fallout, nuclear winter, and possibly enough resulting debris in the atmosphere to instigate the same scenario that killed the dinosaurs.
A good way to harness the sense of scale of this device: The largest actual nuclear weapon ever built was Russia’s ‘Tzar Bomba’. It had a yield of 50 megatons, a fireball radius of 2.3 kilometers, the mushroom cloud was 40 miles high, and the blast was seen and felt 1000 km (620 miles) from ground zero, and last but not least, the seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth.

Fallout is not a real killer – witness the number of heavily irradiated Hiroshima survivors, and the small number of tragedies associated with Chernobyl.
Nuclear winter is another fable – witness the large number of far more energetic volcanic eruptions which only produce a small amount of cooling for only a short time. The event the probably precipitated the demise of the dinosaurs was way more massive in energy terms than the total combined energy of every nuclear weapon….and it still came no-where near wiping out life ( just some vulnerable species ).
Life is adaptable and will hang for a while yet, despite any effort we make to get rid of it…..we might just succeed in getting rid of our species though.

A Peripheral Weapon? $155 The tank was arguably the most important technological innovation that developed during World War I; however, without the support of the British Army and the allocation of important wartime resources, it would have remained merely a peripheral weapon. For far too long, the depiction of the British War Office and GHQ, France, as anti-technological and cavalry-oriented has persisted. While some historians have recently challenged this view, much of the traditional versus progressive school of thought, in regard to the production and employment of the tank, still survives. By posing the question: was the tank a peripheral weapon? this work reveals the vital role of the War Office in the production and employment of this stunning new weapon. The War Office was behind the creation of the original Tank Committee, the New or Advisory Tank Committee, the Tank Directorate and the Tank Board. It was these bodies, particularly the Tank Board, established in 1918, that facilitated the crucially important liaison between the users of tanks in France and the producers at the Ministry of Munitions. Without War Office involvement in this way, without its continued orders for more and better tanks, and without the consistently high priority status accorded to tank production by General Haig, it is inconceivable that the tank would have reached the level of technical sophistication, and therefore usefulness, that it had by late 1918. |

The B-17 Flying Fortress went on to enter full-scale production and was considered the first truly mass-produced large aircraft, eventually evolving through numerous design advancements, from B-17A to G. The B-17 was primarily employed in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and civilian targets. The B-17 also participated, to a lesser extent, in the War in the Pacific. From its pre-war inception, the USAAC touted the B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-ranging bomber capable of unleashing great destruction yet able to defend itself. The B-17 established itself as a superb weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II. Of the 1.5 million tons of bombs dropped on Germany, 500,000 were dropped from B-17s. Generally considered the defining B-17 design, all changes made in the B-17F production run were incorporated into the final version, the B-17G Fortress. 8,680 B-17G Fortress were built. Eighty-five B-17G Fortress were transferred to the Royal Air Force, where they were used as the Fortress III. They operated with two squadrons of Bomber Commands No. 100 Group RAF at RAF Sculthorpe, where they were used for electronic countermeasures missions to confuse and jam enemy radar. B-29 Superfortress Bockscar 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft $126.55 Bockscar was a USAF B-29 bomber that dropped the Fat Man nuclear weapon over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, the second atomic weapon used against Japan. Bockscar is a pun on boxcar after the name of its aircraft commander, Captain Frederick C. Bock. Bockscar was built at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant at Omaha, Nebraska, as a Block 35 aircraft. It was one of ten modified as a Silverplate and redesignated Block 36. Delivered on March 19, 1945 to the USAF, it was assigned to Captain Frederick C. Bock and crew C-13. Bockscar was also used in 13 training and practice missions from Tinian, and three combat missions in which it dropped pumpkin bombs on industrial targets in Japan. B-36J Peacemaker 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft $177.5 The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was the first thermonuclear weapon delivery vehicle and the first operational strategic bomber to truly have intercontinental range. It was the largest piston-engined aircraft ever to be mass-produced. It was also the largest combat aircraft ever built, although there have been larger military transports. The B-36 set the benchmark for subsequent US long range bombers such as the B-52 Stratofortress and B-1 Lancer. The development of the B36 was brought about by Nazi Germanys aggression and subsequently by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States Army Air Corps required a long range bomber and opened up a design competition on April 11, 1941. Despite the sense of urgency, the B-36 program progressed slowly. Existing technology failed to satisfy the military requirements, early wartime demands exceeded materials, and weapons more readily available received the highest priority during the war. The Peacemaker had four bomb bays that could carry up to 86,000 pounds of bombs, six remote-controlled retractable gun turrets, and fixed tail and nose turrets. It was the only aircraft designed to carry the T12 Cloud Maker, a gravity bomb capable of producing an earth quake bomb effect. The B-36s maiden flight was on August 8, 1946, and all variants served under the US Air Force Strategic Air Command from 1948 to 1958. On Labor Day, September 1, 1952, two-thirds of the 7th and 11th Bomb Wings B-36s were incapacitated, not by enemy action, but by a windstorm. At 6:42 PM, a tornado made a direct hit on the Carswell Air Force Base, scattering the enormous bombers like empty milk cartons. Flight operations were transferred to nearby Meacham Field and other military bases. Most of the planes were repaired and flying again in less than five weeks. The final version of the Peacemaker, the B-36J, had two additional tanks which allowed an additional fuel load of 2,770 gallons. It also had a much stronger landing gear, permitting a gross takeoff |

B-36J Peacemaker 1/125 Scale Model Aircraft $141.99 Six pusher radial engines, mounted on the trailing edge of the wings, powered this big long-range SAC bomber. The D, burn and turn , model was boosted by a pair of turbojet pods under the outer wings. A strategic bomb built by Convair for the United States Air Force, the B36 Peacemaker is said to be the very first bomber that had intercontinental range and was also the first thermonuclear weapon delivery vehicle. The Peacemaker was the largest combat aircraft ever built. Its 230 foot wingspan is almost fifty percent longer than that of the huge B-52 that replaced it. The B-36 was one of Americas major deterrents to violence by a prospective adversary for eight years. From 1948 to 1958, the B-36 became part of the USAF Strategic Air Command. Major General Henry Arnold described the B-36 as the plane that could fly the skin off any rivals. The Peacemaker was also the first Cold War Bomber. Unlike any other aircraft that were seen in wars dropping bombs or firing on an enemy, the B-36 was never seen in any of these actions. Instead, the Peacemaker was closest seen during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and the Suez Crisis where it was dispatched to Turkey and Morocco. Thus, the Peacemaker is famous for never having fired a shot in anger and the plane that kept peace for ten long years. The B-36 Peacemaker was also involved in two aircraft collapse incidents, one was February 13, 1950 in an unpopulated region of British Columbia and it was the first loss of an American Nuclear Weapon. The other one was on May 22, 1957 when a B-36 accidentally dropped a bomb on a deserted area while landing at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. A total of 388 B-36 Peacemakers were produced. The last one was built on August 1954. Then on June 29, 1955 the first B-52 was delivered to SAC. All Peacemaker models were delivered and converted to J models on which two jet engines were added to each wing. The last B-36 Peacemaker made its final flight in 1959. B-58A Hustler 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft $196.09 The Convair B-58 Hustler was the first operational jet bomber capable of Mach 2 supersonic flight and was developed for the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command in the late 1950s. The B-58 program started in February 1949. The B-58 design was the first true USAF supersonic bomber program. Its design was based on a delta wing with a leading-edge sweep of 60 degrees with four General Electric J79-GE-1 turbojet engines. It has a crew of three, the pilot, bombardier/navigator and defensive systems operator. The B-58 carries a single nuclear weapon in a streamlined MB-1C pod under the fuselage. The B-58 has a crew of three and has a maximum speed of Mach 2.1 The B-58 is extremely expensive and it was reported that each B-58As costs much more than its weight in gold. Based on the chassis of the famous Panzer III, the StuG III began life as an infantry support weapon, but by the end of the war it had developed into an effective tank destroyer. One of the earlier variants of the StuG III was the Ausf.C, which was identified by an improved superstructure that eliminated a shot trap near the gunner’s view port. A total of 50 StuG III Ausf.C vehicles, each weighing 20.2 tons and featuring a 7.5cm StuK37 L/24 gun, were produced between May and September of 1941. Dragon’s latest Orange Box combo set includes a 1/35 scale StuG III Ausf.C, although the kit has a notable difference in that it mounts a 7.5cm StuK40 L/48 main armament instead of the original L/24 gun. This longer-barreled gun was retrofitted to some earlier chassis in order to provide a more effective tank destroying capability. The 1/35 scale tank has also received something of a makeover with the addition of Magic Tracks to add more detailand convenience. The other item included in this economic set is a team of four Panzergrenadiers.
