What medieval/ancient warfare games let you play as a soldier in an army in full scale battles?
Every game where it has warfare with hand to hand combat like swords and spears etc is either real time, or the battles are like 10 vs 10. What games let you play as a soldier in a full army in full scale battles?
Mount & Blade is the closest to that I’ve found, but you can only really get it up to mega scale if you use the Battle Size Changer tool and have a beastie of a computer.
I’d recommend getting it anyway, since it’s pretty cheap most places, if you pay more than £10 you’re being ripped off. Also it’s pretty fun, the combat is simple but can be really good once you get used to the controls.

Algernon Sidney and the English Republic 1623 1677 $53 In the century following his execution for treason in 1683, Algernon Sidney became one of the most widely influential political writers – in both Europe and America – that England had ever produced. This is the first full-scale study of Sidney for more than a century, and the first ever study of his political thought. The book describes Sidney’s republican political ideas and their later impact. It sets them in their ideological context, in relation both to their sources and to the ideas of contemporaries, including Milton, Harrington, Vane, and Locke. It then asks: how did this ideology develop, and why? The answer involves a series of investigations: of Sidney’s family background; of the nature of his personal life and family relationships; and of his public political career. On this latter score we follow Sidney’s progress from parliamentarian soldier in the English Civil War, to senior member and ambassador of the English Republic, to embittered exile after the Restoration in 1660. |

Berg’s Wozzeck $75.59 Although Berg decided immediately after seeing Buchner”s play Woyzeck in May 1914 to set it to music, he did not complete his opera until 1922, with the Berlin premiere taking place in 1925. Berg”s Wozzeck traces the composer”s slow but determined progress. Using compositional sketches, diaries, notebooks and other archival material, author Patricia Hall reveals the challenges Berg faced–from his induction as a soldier in World War I, to the hyperinflation of the twenties. In addition to the precise chronology of the opera, the sketches show how Berg derived large-scale form from the Buchner text, and how his compositional style evolved during the nine years in which he composed the opera. A comprehensive visual database on the book”s companion website of the extant sketches from seven archives in the United States, Germany and Austria allows the reader to examine, for the first time, Berg”s sketches in high resolution color scans. |

An all-new campaign supporting cooperative action for up to four players is included, and in a departure from previous titles, Master Chief is no longer the main protagonist. You are a new recruit to the Noble Team, a six-person squad of Spartan super soldiers, whose members specialize in key roles and wear customized gear. Planet Reach, the main base for UNSC military operations and home to 700 million civilians, is under attack from the alien collective known as the Covenant. Your mission is to assist the human resistance and prevent the Covenant from destroying Reach, Earth’s last line of defense. The shooting takes place from a first-person perspective, powered by a new graphics engine designed to incorporate large-scale battles in more open environments than in previous entries. Enemy AI has also changed from earlier games, relying more on dynamic actions instead of scripted routines. Each soldier’s armor now offers distinctive abilities, depending on the equipped enhancements. A jetpack allows you to fly, active camouflage makes you invisible to enemies, sprint lets you dash at high speeds, and armor lock makes you temporarily invulnerable at the expense of movement. These abilities also play an important role in Halo: Reach’s multiplayer modes, which support up to 16 combatants online. Reach’s multiplayer component includes such past favorites as “Team Slayer” and “King of the Hill” along with new options. In “Headhunter,” players collect flaming skulls from defeated opponents and attempt to deposit the skulls in designated areas for points. If you are killed before you reach the target area, your collected skulls will fall to the ground for others to retrieve. “Stockpile” is a variant on capture the flag, while “Generator Defense” pits three Spartans versus three Covenant Elites in a battle to defend or destroy generators…. |

Saratoga $4.99 Set against the burning backdrop of the vicious, ugly turmoil that accompanied the formation of America, Saratoga is the thrilling first installment in a series that will chronicle the birth of a nation, and the stories of the men and women hopelessly caught in its wake. It is May, 1777, and the British colonies in America have declared independence from the crown. The mammoth British military machine has been dispatched to stamp out this minor annoyance, but the gutty American rebels have shown a surprisingly stubborn resistance to being put back in their place, and the past year has seen skirmishes from Crown Point to Fort Ticonderoga. Captain Jamie Skoyles is a career soldier in the British Army who has made a reputation of conspicuous gallantry for himself with his unswerving bravery and uncanny luck. As he fights alongside unquestioning British patriots in the unfamiliar lands of America, Skoyles can’t help but mistrust the cocky leaders of his own military as costly, bumbling mistakes begin to pile up and the American rebels surge with confidence. Unable to pursue his love, a woman betrothed to a fellow officer, Skoyles must instead focus on staying alive and furthering the commonwealth’s cause in his own small corner of the war. As the two vast armies converge on Saratoga in what will prove the first large-scale test of the war, the American rebels gain momentum and British victory no longer seems certain. Skoyles soon finds his loyalties tested as he imagines life after the war, which he intends to live in the new world, no matter who governs it. An action-packed debut with a heavy dose of human drama and a complicated love story at its center, SARATOGA is anexcellent first entry in what is sure to become a favorite new series for fans of historical fiction. |

The Battle Of The Bulge $29.99 Second only to D-Day, the invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge is the most famous and significant battle fought by American forces in Europe in World War II. The Bulge was a last-ditch, desperate gamble by Hitler in December 1944 that caught the Western Allies by surprise. Only the willingness of Americans to stand and die prevented the German breakthrough that might have prolonged the war and allowed the Soviet Red Army to seize even more of central Europe. The thirty-nine day battle involved nearly a million men from both sides and resulted in nineteen thousand American casualties–almost as many as in the eighty days of fighting in the D-Day invasion and Normandy hedgerows. An iconic battle that helped define the U.S. soldier of the era, the Bulge continues to capture the imagination of armchair historians who are fascinated by the scale of destruction and what-ifs of the campaign. |

The Wizard of Osborne $16.95 The Wizard of Osborne takes place in a Basic Combat Training camp in Fort Knox during the harsh fall and winter of 1977, when Kentucky remained under a few feet of snow between November and March.Osborne lives in his own slow and distant world. His hanging lower lip makes him appear idiotic. Other soldiers ridicule him. They think of him as touched by the spirits, or just dumb and lazy, while the rest of the men are convinced that Osborne is bucking for an early discharge. Although he takes pride in the American sense of fair play, he becomes dismayed at the ongoing bigotry and exclusion in the ranks.Osborne has a unique talent of making statuettes, busts, and reliefs with ice and snow of everything he sees. He makes ice-figures of his drill sergeants, his friends, birds on a chain link fence, and even a poodle to cheer up a fellow soldier. In the end, Osborne becomes the boot camp hero simply by building a grand scale monument with ice and snow, and saves the day. |
