Charles Hudson VC was one of the twentieth century’s outstanding fighting soldiers. His military career through two world wars and in Russia in 1919 earned him a host of medals. He was also a man of deep feeling, an accomplished poet and, in many ways, a rebel. In this compelling biography, the author skilfully interweaves his own narrative insight with his father’s wartime journals and other unpublished material. The narrative includes detailed personal descriptions of the Battle of the Somme and other actions. It recounts the authoress Vera Brittain’s bitter reaction to the death of her brother Edward when under Hudson’s command in Italy in 1918 and tells how Hudson, out of compassion for her feelings, did not reveal the truth until he met her in 1934. It tells of the extraordinary affair in the summer of 1940, when the Secretary of State for War, Anthony Eden, asked a meeting of senior army commanders in the then beleaguered Britain whether, in the event of a successful German invasion, their soldiers would agree to be evacuated to Canada or whether they would insist on going home to support their families. The author examines Hudson’s motivation in both wars and delves deeply into his complex, and highly courageous, character.

“>Here is the adventurous, true story of David Carey Nance — a young, Northern-born Texas farmer who opposed slavery but got caught up in the carnage of the Civil War as a soldier in a Texas Cavalry. After enlisting against his father’s will, Nance initially reveled in the camaraderie and excitement of military life, but his romantic concepts were quickly dashed by the grim realities of deprivation, sickness, and the horrors of armed combat.> >Fourteen years in preparation, >The Ragged Rebel> is a delightfully written, well-documented narrative, often in Nance’s own words, about a sensitive and deeply religious farm boy’s fight for survival amid wartime conditions in the frontier regions of the western Confederacy. It not only reveals the day-to-day experiences of a common soldier in the core regiment of perhaps the most famous brigade in the Trans-Mississippi West, but also provides valuable insights into the military operations of mounted troops west of the river.>”

The Soldier's Story of His Captivity at Andersonville, Belle Isle, and Other Rebel Prisons

The Soldier’s Story of His Captivity at Andersonville, Belle Isle, and Other Rebel Prisons

$4.95

During the Civil War tens of thousands of soldiers died in prisons. In Andersonville Prison Pen alone over 11,000 soldiers of the 33,000 died of starvation, exposure and consumption or other disease. In The Soldier’s Story Goss, a member of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment of Heavy Artillery during the war, writes of his captivity at Andersonville and Belle Isle prisons. Goss was a prisoner twice, once in 1862 for four months and in 1864 for nine months. His experience in these prisons was of a kind that few endure and live to write about. Although he attempts to relate the tale of horrors experienced in these prisons without exaggeration, he realizes that it is hard to comprehend that men can live through some of the cruelties of which he writes, to understand man’s inhumanity to man.

Rebel Soldiers and Other Musings on the Vanity of Life

This is Terry Freemans first book. The poem Rebel Soldiers was written in 1990. Terry was in Biloxi Mississippi on business. He stopped by Beauvoir, Jefferson Davis home, and visited the Confederate cemetery. He was the only person there. It was late in the day and the sun seemed to float through the live oaks and Spanish moss. The shadows seemed to dance on the tombstones in the warm evening breeze. The only sound heard was the rustle of dry leaves rolling along the ground. He spent a long time beside the tomb of the Confederate Unknown Soldier. It was dark when he made his way back to his rental car. Later that night he wrote Rebel Soldiers. The other poems in this book were written at various times over a 30year period. A Black Soldier’s Story

A Black Soldier’s Story

In 1896, an illiterate, fifteen-year-old Afro-Cuban field hand joined the rebel army fighting for Cuba's independence. Though poor and uneducated, Ricardo Batrell believed in the promise of Cuba Libre, the vision of a democratic and egalitarian nation that inspired the Cuban War of Independence. After the war ended in 1898, Batrell taught himself to read and write and published a memoir of his wartime experiences, Para la Historia . Originally published in 1912-the same year in which the Cuban government massacred more than 5,000 Afro-Cubans-this work of both protest and patriotism is the only autobiographical account of the war written by an Afro-Cuban soldier. After the war, Batrell became dismayed by the Cuban Republic's rapid retreat from the revolution's democratic ideals. Government corruption, racial discrimination, and the systematic exclusion of black veterans from public service had helped to reassert the racial hierarchy of colonial Cuba. With his memoir, Batrell hoped to remind Cubans about the participation of Afro-Cubans in the war (as much as 80 percent of the Cuban Liberation Army may have been Afro-Cuban) and to protest their subjugation in its aftermath. Now available for the first time in English, Batrell's powerful memoir provides profound insights into the role of race in the nation's history. Deftly rendering Batrell's forceful and energetic prose into English, Mark A. Sanders also puts forth a critical introduction that contextualizes Batrell's perspective within Cuba's colonial history and its racial politics.

Fascinating. Historical Journal of Massachusetts Neimeyer demythologizes the Continental army and very effectively demonstrates that it was an organization that evolved from its original relatively homogeneous make-up into a volatile, multicultural force that included many recent immigrants, African Americans, and Native Americans. . . . A testament to the propertyless, inarticulate, marginal individuals who actually secured liberty for later generations. Dr. David J. Fowler The David Library of the American Revolution Neimeyer pushes to the next plateau the recent work of historians who have investigated the contributions of the Continental Army to the American Revolution. Because of his research and his synthesis of recent scholarship, the previously inarticulate common soldiers of the rank and file find their voices. James M. Johnson author ofMilitiamen, Rangers, and Redcoats: The Military in Georgia, 1754-1776 Thoroughly compelling. Neimeyer’s research is superb, and his social history perspective has told us more than anyone about the origins of the Continental Army and the meanings soldiers attached to their service. This is a genuinely important book. Mark Edward Ledner co-author ofA Respectable Army: The Military Origins of the Republic One of the images Americans hold most dear is that of the drum-beating, fire-eating Yankee Doodle Dandy rebel, overpowering his British adversaries through sheer grit and determination. The myth of the classless, independence-minded farmer or hard-working artisan-turned-soldier is deeply ingrained in the national psyche. Charles Neimeyer here separates fact from fiction, revealing for the first time who reallyserved in the army during the Revolution and why. His conclusions are startling. Because the army relied primarily on thosenotconnected to the new American aristorcracy, the African Americans, Irish, Germans, Native Americans, laborers-for-hire, and free white men on the move who ser

 Baroque Personae

Baroque Personae

$30.01

The Baroque, which stretched from the end of the sixteenth to the second half of the seventeenth century, is one of the most enigmatic eras in history. In this book, thirteen distinguished scholars develop a portrait of institutions, ideologies, intellectual themes, and social structures as they are reflected in Baroque personae, or characteristic social roles. Studying the statesman, soldier, financier, secretary, rebel, preacher, missionary, nun, witch, scientist, artist, and bourgeois, the essays depart dramatically from traditional accounts of this era. The statesman, for example, is seen here as the exact opposite of a benevolent man working for the common good; and the soldier is depicted as part of an institution that could be savage and destructive but that also, by the end of the Baroque age, helped shape a more rational relationship with the military and civil society. The contributors are Rosario Villari, Henry Kamen, Geoffrey Parker, Daniel Dessert, Salvatore S. Nigro, Manuel Moran, Jose Andres-Gallego, Adriano Prosperi, Mario Rosa, Brian P. Levack, Paolo Rossi, Giovanni Careri, and James S. Amelang.
