Sea Slug Missile

Sea Slug Missile

$70.1

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Sea Slug was a first generation surfacetoair missile designed by Armstrong Whitworth (later part of the Hawker Siddeley group) for use by the Royal Navy. It came into operational service in the 1960s and was still in use at the time of the Falklands War. Sea Slug was intended to engage highflying targets such as reconnaissance aircraft or bombers before they could launch standoff weapons. Later improvements meant that it could also be used against ships. Work on what became Sea Slug began in 1949 under Stage 1 of the Royal Navys postwar missile program. The weapon was intended to counter highaltitude, nucleararmed bombers before they could release their weapons. Work was based on an earlier programme known as LOPGAP (Liquid Oxygen / Petrol Guided Antiaircraft Projectile) and a Victory Ship specially converted into prototype escort ship, HMS Girdle Ness, was procured for developmental work. The original system differed in having a triple launcher. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. The Missile and Space Race

The Missile and Space Race

$197.81

Here is a history of the development of military missiles and space travel from World War II to the American visits to the Moon in 19691972. It stresses the relationship between the early stages of space exploration and the arms race, and that a dual path led to space flight. One was the development of unmanned longrange war rockets, the other, less often noted, was the rocketpowered research plane. The first path led through the intercontinental ballistic missile to the first artificial satellites and space capsule; the latter, more uniquely American, through the Xseries and Skyrocket rocket planes to the X15, and ultimately to the Space Shuttle. The early part of the book focuses on the SovietAmerican race to develop the ICBM in the 1950s, and the first satellites, with particular attention paid to the events and reactions that followed the flight of Sputnik I in 1957 and the subsequent missile gap era. Toys and Models Submarine Fleet Missile

In 1959 to 1960 the first ballistic missile submarines were put into service by both the United States and the Soviet Union as part of the Cold War nuclear and nonnuclear powers. During the Cold War the Soviet Union suffered the loss of at least four submarines during this period. Some of these are the K129 lost in 1968 the K8 in 1970 the K219 in 1986 and Komsomolets in 1989. While the United States lost two nuclear submarines during this time the USS Thresher and Scorpion. The Navy s fleet ballistic missile submarines (Boomers) primary mission serves as an undetectable launch platform for intercontinental missiles. The ballistic missile submarines are designed specifically for stealth and precision delivery of nuclear warheads. The development of submarinelaunched nuclear missiles and submarinelaunched cruise missile gave submarines a substantial and longranged ability to attack both land and sea targets with a variety of weapons ranging from cluster bombs to nuclear weapons. The Ohio class SSBNs can carry up to 24 submarinelaunched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) with multiple independentlytargeted warheads. The Trident missile was SSBN s primary weapon and it was built in two versions. The Trident C4 was phased out of service and was replaced by the Trident II D5 which was generally larger longerrange and more precise. The first eight submarines (SSBN 726s to 733s) were initially built to carry the C4 missile only. The first four (SSBN 726s through SSBN 729s) ended their strategic deterrent mission in the early 2000s. While the SSBN 734s to 743s were designed from the beginning to carry the D5 missile and they continued their primary mission of strategic deterrence. In fictional books such as the Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne the most famous submarine of all time is probably Nautilus since many other ships were named Nautilus and the name has been associated with fighting ships of the United States Navy since 1803.

This guidance system is most commonly used in antitank missiles, where its ability to be used in areas of limited lineofsight make it useful, while the range limit imposed by the length of the wire is not a serious concern. The Arrow or Hetz is a family of antiballistic missiles designed to fulfill an Israeli requirement for a theater missile defense system that would be more effective against ballistic missiles than the MIM104 Patriot surfacetoair missile. Jointly funded and produced by Israel and the United States, development of the system began in 1986 and has continued since, drawing some contested criticism. 11] Undertaken by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Boeing, it is overseen by the Israeli Ministry of Defences Homa administration and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. The Arrow system consists of the joint production hypersonic Arrow antimissile interceptor, the Elta EL/M2080 Green Pine earlywarning AESA radar, the Tadiran Telecom Golden Citron ( Citron Tree ) oI center,] and the Israel Aerospace Industries Brown Hazelnut ( Hazelnut Tree ) launch control center. The system is transportable rather than mobile, as it can be moved to other prepared sites, but cannot be set up just anywhere. Following the construction and testing of the Arrow 1 technology demonstrator production and deployment began with the Arrow 2 version of the missile. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An antitank guided missile or antitank guided weapon is a guided missile primarily designed to hit and destroy heavilyarmored tanks and other armored fighting vehicles.ATGMs range in size from shoulderlaunched weapons which can be transported by a single soldier, to larger tripod mounted weapons which require a squad or team to transport and fire, to vehicle and aircraft mounted missile systems. The introduction of smaller, manportable ATGMs with larger warheads to the modern battlefield has given infantry the ability to defeat light and medium armored tanks at great ranges, though main battle tanks using composite and reactive armors have proven to resistant to smaller ATGMs. Earlier infantry antitank weapons such as antitank rifles, antitank rockets and magnetic antitank mines had limited armorpenetration abilities and/or required a soldier to approach the target closely. AirToAir Missile

AirToAir Missile

$108.33

An airtoair missile (AAM) is a guided missile fired from an aircraft for the purpose of destroying another aircraft. AAMs are typically powered by one or more rocket motors, usually solid fuelled but sometimes liquid fuelled. Ramjet engines, as used on the MBDA Meteor (currently in development), are emerging as propulsion that will enable future mediumrange missiles to maintain higher average speed across their engagement envelope. Airtoair missiles are broadly put in two groups. The first consists of missiles designed to engage opposing aircraft at ranges less than around 20 miles, these are known as shortrange or within visual range missiles (SRAAMs or WVRAAMs) and are sometimes called dogfight missiles because they emphasize agility rather than range. These usually use infrared guidance, hence also being called heatseeking missiles. The second group consists of medium or longrange missiles (MRAAMs or LRAAMs), which both fall under the category of beyond visual range missiles (BVRAAMs). BVR missiles tend to rely upon some sort of radar guidance, of which there are many forms, modern ones also using inertial guidance and/or midcourse updates. Nag Missile

Nag Missile

$82.85

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles As originally conceived, the Nag would have been available with three different types of guidance, These included a wire guided version, an infrared version and a millimetric wave (mmW) version. The cumbersome nature of a wire guidance system had led to plans for this being dropped. Currently, guidance is based on an imaging infrared (IIR) passive seeker that ensures a highhit accuracy in both top and frontattack modes. The mmW seeker, on the other hand, is intended to operate as an optional system that can replace the IIR passive seeker as a module. Also incorporated into the guidance system, is a CCD camera. The advantage of this optical seeker is that it is less prone to jamming. The missile has a weight of 42 kg and can engage targets at ranges 45 km. The Nag is claimed to be first antitank missile which has a complete fiberglass structure. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Missile Flight Simulation

Missile Flight Simulation

$93.38

Surfacetoair missiles are designed to defend a land area against an aerial or theater ballistic missile threat. The size of the defended area and the capabilities of the threat have great influence on the speed, maneuverability, and lethality requirements of the missile system. Simulation of the missile flight path can provide valuable information about these requirements. A missile flight simulation is a computational tool that calculates the flight of a missile from launch until it engages the target. The simulation is based on mathematical models of the missile, target and environment. This book provides instruction for the preparation of these mathematical models to simulate the flight of a surfacetoair missile. This book may be used as a reference or as a textbook, although it is devoid of exercises. However, the reader is encourages to perform the simulation of Charter 12 using MATLAB and Simulink, or a programming language such as FORTRAN (see Chapter 10). Dart (Missile)

Dart (Missile)

$90.81

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Darts are missile weapons, designed to fly such that a sharp, often weighted point will strike first. They can be distinguished from javelins by fletching (i.e., feathers on the tail) and a shaft that is shorter and/or more flexible, and from arrows by the fact that they are not of the right length to use with a normal bow. The term has been used to describe an extremely wide variety of projectiles, from heavy spearlike ammunition for siege engines or atlatls to tiny poisoned needles for use in blowguns. Some of the earliest evidence of advanced tool use includes remnants of an early type of dart, which can be considered the ancestor of arrows as well as bows. Reconstructions of this system have a range of over one hundred meters (yards) and can penetrate several centimeters of oak. This technology was used worldwide from the Upper Palaeolithic (late Solutrean, ca. 18,00016,000 BC) until the development of archery made it obsolete. Indian Ballistic Missile Defense Program

$79.66

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Indian Ballistic Missile Defense Program is an initiative to develop and deploy a multilayered Ballistic missile defense system to protect India from missile attacks. Introduced in light of the ballistic missile threat from Pakistan, it is a two tiered system consisting of two interceptor missiles, namely the Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) missile for high altitude interception, and the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) Missile for lower altitude interception. The twotiered shield will be able to intercept any incoming missile launched 5,000 kilometers away. PAD was tested in November 2006, followed by AAD in December 2007. With the test of the PAD missile, India became the fourth country to have successfully developed an Antiballistic missile system, after United States, Russia and Israel. On March 6, 2009, India again successfully tested its missile defense shield, during which an incoming enemy missile was intercepted at an altitude of 75 km. Integrated Guided Missile Development Program

Integrated Guided Missile Development Program

$81.25

The Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) was an Indian Ministry of Defence program between the early 1980s and 2007 for the development of a comprehensive range of missiles, including the intermediate range Agni missile (Surface to Surface), and short range missiles such as the Prithvi ballistic missile (Surface to Surface), Akash missile (Surface to Air), Trishul missile (Surface to Air) and Nag Missile (Anti Tank). The program was managed by Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in partnership with other Indian government labs and research centres. One of the most prominent chief engineers on the project, Dr. Abdul Kalam went on to become the President of India. The project was started in early 1980s and resulted in the development of several key strategic missiles. The last major missile developed under the program was Agni 3 intermediaterange ballistic missile which was successfully tested on 9 July 2007. On 8 January 2008, and after the third test of Agni3 on 7 May 2008, the DRDO announced that it will be closing the IGMDP program formally since most of the missiles in the program have been developed and inducted into Indian armed forces. The Poilitics of Ballistic Missile Non Proliferation

$146

During the presidency of George Bush (1989-93), the proliferation of nuclear chemical and biological weapons, and the ballistic missiles capable of delivering them, rose greatly in significance as issues on the American security agenda. In the missile field, this became evident by the efforts of certain elements in the executive branch and several congressmen to improve domestic and international implementation of the Missile Technology Control Regime. The Politics of Ballistic Missile Nonproliferation examines the political, bureaucratic and systemic issues that interacted to determine the outcome of these efforts.

AntiTank Guided Missile

AntiTank Guided Missile

$81.25

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles An antitank guided missile (ATGM) or antitank guided weapon (ATGW) is a guided missile primarily designed to hit and destroy heavilyarmored tanks and other armored fighting vehicles. ATGMs range in size from shoulderlaunched weapons which can be transported by a single soldier, to larger tripod mounted weapons which require a squad or team to transport and fire, to vehicle and aircraft mounted missile systems. The introduction of smaller, manportable ATGMs with larger warheads to the modern battlefield has given infantry the ability to defeat even heavily armored main battle tanks at great ranges, usually with the first shot. Earlier infantry antitank weapons such as antitank rifles, antitank rockets and magnetic antitank mines had limited armorpenetration abilities and/or required a soldier to approach the target closely. The Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cuban Missile Crisis

$35

For 13 days in October 1962, the United States came closer than it ever had to nuclear war with the Soviet Union. In retaliation for the U.S. placement of missiles near the Soviet border in Europe, the Soviet Union placed missiles on Cuba, a mere 90 miles from U.S. soil. In the 13 heated days that followed, U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev successfully negotiated a peaceful end to the missile standoff that had led the world to the brink of nuclear war a war that would have undoubtedly devastated both countries. The Cuban Missile Crisis explores the dramatic developments of those 13 days, from the time the United States first learned of the USSR's nuclear missiles in Cuba to the steps taken to ensure that those missiles were never fired.

Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

$108.33

An Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, or ICBM, is a longrange (greater than 5,500 km or 3,500 miles) ballistic missile typically designed for nuclear weapons delivery, that is, delivering one or more nuclear warheads. Due to their great range and firepower, in an allout nuclear war, submarine and landbased ICBMs would carry most of the destructive force, with nucleararmed bombers the remainder. ICBMs are differentiated by having greater range and speed than other ballistic missiles: intermediaterange ballistic missiles (IRBMs), mediumrange ballistic missiles (MRBMs), shortrange ballistic missiles (SRBMs)these shorter range ballistic missiles are known collectively as theatre ballistic missiles. Categorizing missiles by range is necessarily subjective and the boundaries are chosen somewhat arbitrarily. Cruise Missile Proliferation in the 1990s

Cruise Missile Proliferation in the 1990s

The proliferation of advanced weapons to volatile regions of the world has become a major issue in the post Cold War era. It was thought that no Third World nation could ever pose a technologicallybased threat to the great powers by acquiring advanced weaponry. But this has proved to be wrong. The Persian Gulf War changed the worldwide perception of the spread of ballistic missiles to countries like Iraq. Access to a new type of weaponcruise missilesposes an even greater threat. With technology that is accessible, affordable, and relatively simple to produce, Third World countries could acquire highly accurate, longrange cruise missile forces to escalate local conflicts and threaten the forces and even the territories of the industrial powers. This book is a warning to policymakers. It is not too late to confront the realities of cruise missile proliferation and to devise international responses that could contain the worst possible consequences. Carus proposes a new regime of technology controls, securitybuilding measures, and conflict resolution that need to be considered, and acted on, by policymakers and international relations experts everywhere. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A cruise missile is a guided missile that carries an explosive payload and is propelled, usually by a jet engine, towards a landbased or seabased target. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high accuracy. Modern cruise missiles can travel at supersonic or high subsonic speeds, are selfnavigating, and can fly on a nonballistic, extremely low altitude trajectory. They are distinct from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in that they are used only as weapons and not for reconnaissance. In a cruise missile, the warhead is integrated into the vehicle and the vehicle is always sacrificed in the mission. Americas Atomic Bomb Tests

Americas Atomic Bomb Tests

$14.99

Operation Tumbler Snapper (47 min) – Despite its effectiveness in World War II, little was actually known about an A-bomb’s power. What ships could survive a blast and what ships couldn’t? Just how powerful was the shock wave? These are the tests that provided the answers that today are the core of America’s nuclear weapons knowledge. Formerly classified material documents Operation Tumbler Snapper, which detonated small yield atomic weapons to determine their effectiveness on troops, animals and buildings. At Ground Zero (74 Min) – Full photographic coverage of the only tests ever conducted of the effects of a nuclear bomb on a typical American community. The nuclear bomb was brought to America’s doorstep during an unusual series of nuclear tests conducted in the Nevada desert in the 1950s. At Ground Zero contains the first-ever compilation of the full-length official documentaries that chronicle the effects of these tests as the full fury of a nuclear bomb is demonstrated on the typical American home. Operation Hardtack (90 min) – A priceless history of some of the most unusual nuclear weapons tests ever. Sixty two nuclear bombs were detonated as part of the Operation Hardtack series of nuclear tests. One of the few operations ever to be conducted at both the Pacific Proving Grounds and the Nevada Test Site, Hardtack combined balloon, surface, barge, underwater, underground, tower and missile shots.

A stirring account of the covert effort to smuggle Cuban children into the United States in the aftermath of Fidel Castro’s rise to power, Fleeing Castro brings to light the humanitarian program designed to care for the children once they arrived and the hardship and suffering endured by the families who took part in Operation Pedro Pan.From late 1960 until the October 1962 missile crisis, 14,048 unaccompanied Cuban children left their homeland, the small island suddenly at the center of the Cold War struggle. Their parents, unable to obtain visas to leave Cuba, believed a short separation would be preferable to subjecting their offspring to Castro’s totalitarian Marxist state. For the children, the exodus began a prolonged and tragic ordeal: some didn’t see their parents again for years, and a few never did.Victor Triay traces this story from its political and social origins in Cuba, setting it in the context of the Cold War and describing the roles of the organizations involved, especially the Cuban Children’s Program, established by Father Bryan Walsh of Miami. This history of Pedro Pan — the largest child refugee movement ever in the Western Hemisphere — is presented with the excitement of an international thriller and the pathos of a heartbreaking family drama.

 Halo 3

Halo 3

$59.99

After two chartbusting efforts on Xbox, the enigmatic, genetically enhanced Spartan soldier known as Master Chief makes his highly anticipated Xbox 360 debut in Halo 3. The sci-fi shooter picks up where Halo 2 abruptly left off: The Covenant is continuing its plans to activate the Halo super-weapon and obliterate the galaxy; Earth is in utter disarray with only a few remnants of its armies intact; and the Flood grows stronger and more aggressive with each passing day. Your mission, as Master Chief, is to repel the Flood’s advances, save Earth, and stop the Covenant — no matter what the cost. Halo 3 offers a solo campaign, cooperative play, and multiplayer action via Xbox Live, system link, or split-screen display. The cinematic storyline introduces new characters, weapons, and mission objectives, with the enemy AI offering distinct fighting styles, tactics, and even personalities, all while trying to rip your armored space suit into pieces. Familiar weapons such as the Needler have been upgraded and are joined with all-new armaments, including massive support weapons (such as a missile pod or turret) that switch the default perspective to a third-person view, chargeable lasers, and a gun that shoots out metal spikes. Players can also protect themselves with bubble shields, reach high places with portable gravity lifts, disrupt motion tracking with radar jammers, and more. Vehicles are also a big part of the action, with redesigned favorites and new class types entering the fray, such as the speedy but fragile Mongoose. The matchmaking service introduced in Halo 2 will once again bring similarly skilled Xbox Live players together, albeit with more customization options and a new streamlined interface. Players can still enter multiple lobbies, veto certain maps or game types, and so forth, but now they can instantly form parties with people they’ve just met for future matches, watch videos of completed games to learn techniques of the top Halo players, view det…

Independent Verification and Validation: A Life Cycle Engineering Process for Quality Software

Independent Verification and Validation: A Life Cycle Engineering Process for Quality Software

$185

Software in any technical system or product, be it space shuttle, VCR, or database, is an integral and expensive part of that system – if it fails, the system fails. Twenty years ago the U.S. Army sponsored the first significant Independent Verification and Validation (IV & V) program. The idea was to use independent third party experts to test critical components (especially software) and ensure the quality, performance, and reliability of the Safeguard Anti-Ballistic Missile System. The success of that project led to the adoption of IV & V in the design, development, and implementation of numerous other government projects, both military and civilian. Today IV & V is a cost-effective method of ensuring quality in the development of complex industrial and commercial software systems as well. Independent Verification and Validation presents engineers and computer scientists with the methods and techniques for verifying and validating the software components of engineering designs and systems. Unlike other books on this subject, this book covers the entire software life cycle and explains software development and IV & V together. Included in the text is a survey of Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools. Comprehensive illustrations support the text throughout. The book also offers guidance on better interaction among IV & V personnel, developers, and managers. Eight case studies provide a look at real life examples of a wide range of applications possible with IV & V. For IV & V engineers, development engineers, and managers this is an ideal handbook and reference text. It is also well designed for use as a textbook for graduate, undergraduate, and professional courses.
