because they cause the reader to think profoundly instead of just reading for pure enjoyment. for ex. after reading of mice and men, one might (and should) question what george did to lenny – was that right? was it merciful? could i (the reader) do it? what does the people’s immediate reaction to Lenny’s accidental crime say about our culture and the way we jump to conclusions? what does george and lenny’s dreams say about society and our goals and values?
