Joe Pass – Jazz Guitar Music Legend – Part 2
Many guitarists have been surprised to learn that Joe Pass played Fender solid body guitars on his early jazz guitar music recordings. Normally associated with surf and rock and roll performers, the Fender Jazz Master and Fender Jaguar models seem unlikely foils for his advanced bebop style, but Pass made the most of his circumstances. His Fender guitar sound is heard on recordings like 1961′s “Sounds of Synanon”, 1962′s “Something Special (Groove Holmes) and “Moment of Truth” (Gerald Wilson), and 1963′s “Catch Me”, his first album as a leader. He also employed a Fender Bass VI six string bass guitar for a couple of tracks on the latter date. Pass used a thinline Gibson ES-355 briefly during 1963. This was heard on his sessions as a sideman with Les McCann.
Pass played these atypical jazz guitars until a kind and generous soul, Mike Peak, gave him a Gibson ES-175D in 1963. This guitar is an archtop electric acoustic with two humbucking pickups, a sunburst finish and a 16 inch laminated body. The 175 produced the definitive Joe Pass sound and became his workhorse instrument for most of his career. It is heard prominently on such classic recordings as 1964′s “For Djang” and “Joy Spring”, 1967′s “Simplicity” and 1963′s “Jazz Concord” (with Herb Ellis).
In the 1970s and 1980s, Joe Pass dabbled with a few other jazz archtop guitars, including a custom made James D-Aquisto archtop acoustic with a thinner body and a floating pick up, and an Ibanez JP-20 signature model. He later lent his name to a line of Epiphone Joe Pass Signature guitars in the 1990s. In 1992 Joe took delivery of a custom made Gibson ES-175. According to jazz guitarist John Pisano, Pass’s longtime friend and frequent musical collaborator, this instrument has a thinner body, a single humbucking pickup, a sunburst finish, gold-plated hardware, and an ebony fingerboard. Pisano also mentioned that this is the guitar heard on Joe’s final recordings, including his last: “A Meeting of the Masters: Roy Clark & Joe Pass Play Hank Williams”.
Like most jazz guitarists, Pass used the neck pickup on his ES-175 almost exclusively and adjusted the tone control to produce a warm bassy sound. Joe was supplied with a full custom medium to heavy gauged set of strings from GHS. Joe had an unusual habit of breaking or biting his picks in half to a smaller size that he felt was more comfortable. These were originally smaller teardrop shaped picks and after breaking them he played with the pointed end.
In the 1960s, Joe usually performed and recorded with various Fender tube amplifiers. He used several combo and piggyback models including a Twin Reverb and a white tolex Bandmaster. The latter was seen and heard mated to a Fender Jaguar in a telling 1962 TV performance included on the “Genius of Joe Pass” DVD. Session photos reveal that an Ampeg combo amp was used during the landmark “For Django” recording. By the early 1970s, Pass switched to Polytone solid-state amps and became one of the company’s leading endorsers. Fortunately for aspiring guitarists, Joe Pass released numerous jazz guitar tab books and instructional DVD courses that teach his single note improvised solos and chord melody solos as well as the pickstyle and fingerstyle guitar techniques he used to play them.

1, 2, To the Bass $11.98 Stanley Clarke is without doubt a phenomenally talented bassist but has not done much to showcase this ability on his own recordings since the late ’70s. You can chalk that up mostly to Clarke’s propensity for trite, pop-oriented material that does little to illuminate his great technical command of the instrument or to engage the listener either melodically or lyrically. 1, 2, to the Bass is a step in the right direction with a more jazz-oriented feel and some interesting guest appearances. Rapper Q-Tip gets things off to a nice start on the title track which reimagines ’90s hip-hop jazz as “quiet storm” R&B. “Simply Said” is reminiscent of Sting’s more fusion-style originals with flutist Hubert Laws on a nice melodic hook. There is also an inspired reworking of the R&B classic “Where Is the Love” featuring Glenn Lewis and Amel Larrieux. Later on, if “Los Caballos (The Horses)” sounds a little too much like Madonna’s “Borderline,” and Oprah Winfrey’s reading of Maya Angelou’s “I Shall Not Be Moved” seems a bit out of place on an album that includes a song titled “Just Cruzin’,” there’s at least the “Rock It”-styled electro-disco-funk of “Bout the Bass.” And don’t forget the monstrous “freak” funk cover of “Hair” that almost redeems everything guitarist Joe Satriani has ever done. 16 Biggest Hits $7.99 16 Biggest Hits does a good job representing the highlights of Bobby Bare’s unwieldy catalog, which ranges from the early ’60s to the early ’80s and includes a stint with RCA Victor (1962-1969), Mercury (1970-1972), a second one with RCA (1973-1977), and then one with Columbia (1978-1983). Most Bare best-ofs round up his RCA hits, especially those from the ’60s. Some even tack on a little of his Columbia work now that the RCA and Columbia vaults both fall under Sony BMG ownership. In rare cases, a best-of will include licensed Mercury recordings. 16 Biggest Hits is one such rarity. Granted, it only includes a token Mercury hit, “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” but one is better than none, especially when it’s such a fine song. And so 16 Biggest Hits represents all eras of Bare’s career. His first RCA stint is well represented with seven inclusions: “500 Miles Away from Home,” “The Streets of Baltimore,” “Detroit City,” “Miller’s Cave,” “Four Strong Winds,” “(Margie’s At) The Lincoln Park Inn,” and “It’s Alright.” The second RCA stint is fairly well represented with five inclusions: Billy Joe Shaver’s “Ride Me Down Easy,” a trio of Shel Silverstein-penned songs from the 1973 live classic Bobby Bare Sings Lullabys, Legends and Lies (“Daddy What If,” “Marie Lavaux,” “The Winner”), and “Dropkick Me, Jesus.” The generally neglected Columbia era is poorly represented, unfortunately, with only a pair of songs from Bare’s second live classic, Down & Dirty (“Tequila Sheila,” “Numbers” — both Silverstein-penned). Some non-live Columbia inclusions would have been nice, even if it were only a single song, if only for the sake of representation. On the other hand, there’s precious little room on this 16-track best-of for a catalog as deep and wide-ranging as Bare’s. Written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil (who also wrote “(You’re My) Soul & Inspiration”) and produced by Phil Spector in his trademark Wall of Sound style, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” sets an ominous and emotionally ravished tone from its opening line (“You never close your eyes…) and then builds on even more powerfully from there. Far from being another of Spector’s brilliantly crafted teen symphonies, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” is instead a thoroughly adult one, and the desperation that builds in Bill Medley’s lead vocal (and is echoed by Bobby Hatfield’s impassioned call and response interjections) comes from a man who truly understands what has been lost and is facing the darkest night of his very soul. The only real difference is that all of these were filmed in England (hence the subtitle “The British Tours 1963-1966″), where appreciation of the blues was really taking off and, of course, making a big impression on the U.K. pop scene via artists like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. While the word “legends” is thrown around a lot in reviewing vintage blues compilations, this is one instance where it’s not overhyping the case. Every single performer here is legendary. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson were Chicago blues giants,; the more rural and rawer side of the form is caught by Lightnin’ Hopkins and Big Joe Williams; R&B is represented by Big Joe Turner, and soul by Sugar Pie DeSanto; and the blues’ roots in jazz and gospel are captured by Lonnie Johnson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe respectively. Every single performer here is caught, in well-preserved black-and-white footage, at or near the peak of his or her form, sometimes with some of their very most famous songs, whether it’s Waters doing “Got My Mojo Working,” Williams playing “Baby Please Don’t Go,” or Williamson singing “Bye Bye Bird.” That’s not even mentioning the top talents that can be seen as accompanists at various points, including bassist Willie Dixon, guitarists Hubert Sumlin and Otis Rush, and pianists Sunnyland Slim and Otis Spann. As for the most unusual and colorful performances, perhaps Williamson wins on that account — though not by much — by playing one end of a harmonica without holding it, as if he’s chewing a cigar. Anthology 1975-1984 $24.99 Few bands in the history of hard rock/heavy metal shifted stylistic gears as abruptly as Rainbow did. And unlike some veteran acts that attempt this makeover and only draw the wrath of their already-built audience, Rainbow enjoyed further chart success after the switch. Case in point, the 2009 double-disc set, Anthology, in which two contrasting styles — medieval metal and radio-friendly rock — are gloriously on display throughout. Immediately after splitting from Deep Purple in early 1975, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore enlisted the help of the then-largely unknown singer Ronnie James Dio, and issued a trio of albums that are basically a 101 course on the aforementioned medieval metal style.
