Showa Japan

Showa Japan

$27.95

Japan's Showa era began in 1926 when Emperor Hirohito took the throne and ended on his death in 1989. The formative age of modern Japan, it was undoubtedly the most momentous, calamitous, successful and glamorous period in Japan's recent history. Today, Showa is a beacon for nostalgia that is memorialized yearly in a national holiday. An era of growth and prosperity, it saw Japan go from an isolated, embattled nation to a peaceful country holding the exalted position of the world's second largest economy. Showa Japan is a clear-sighted exploration of the Showa era as it really was&#8212not only a time of wondrous change, security and growth, but also a time of wild spending and excesses in every field that would eventually come crashing to a halt with the bursting of Japan's bubble economy. From the highs of Showa-era extravagance to the lows of the lean years that followed, author Hans Brinckmann, a long-time resident of Japan, examines the impact of the Showa era and its aftermath on every aspect of Japanese society.

How to Strategically Evaluate Japan. Perhaps the most efficient way of evaluating Japan is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. The two measures of greatest relevance to tourism are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. The figure below summarizes the key dimensions and recommendations of such an approach. Using these two composites, one can prioritize all countries of the world. Countries of high latent demand and high relative accessibility (e.g. easier entry for one firm compared to other firms) are given highest priority. The figure below shows two different scenarios. Accessibility is defined as a firm’s ease of entering or supplying from or to a market (the “supply side”), and latent demand is an indicator of the potential in serving from or to the market (the “demand side”). Framework for Prioritizing Countries. Demand/Market Potential Driven Firm. Relative Accessibility. Accessibility/Supply Averse Firm. In the top figure, the firm is driven by market potential, whereas the bottom figure represents a firm that is driven by costs or by an aversion to difficult markets. This report treats the reader as coming from a “generic firm” approaching the global market – neither a market-driven nor a cost-driven company. Planners must therefore augment this report with their own company-specific factors that might change the priorities (e.g. a Canadian firm may have higher accessibility in Canada than a German firm). Latent Demand and Accessibility in Japan. This report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for tourism in Japan. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to tourism. This topic is discussed in Chapter 2 using work carried out in Japan on behalf of American firms and authored by the United States government (typically commercial attachés or similar persons in local offices of the U.S. Department of State). I have included a number of edits to clarify the information provided. Latent demand only represents half of the picture. Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for tourism in Japan. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on tourism. Chapter 3 is also a stand-alone report that I have authored. It covers proxy pro-forma financial indicators of firms operating in Japan. I use the word “proxy” because the provided figures only cover a “what if” scenario, based on actual operating results for firms in Japan. The numbers are only indicative of an average firm whose primary activity is in Japan. It covers a vertical analysis of the maximum likelihood balance sheet, income statement, and finan

Modern Japan

Modern Japan

$38

The book takes a fresh look at modern Japan, and does not treat the Japanese as enigmatic or mysterious people; their ways of thinking and their culture can be explained by an honest appraisal of their history and of the norms that have shaped this history. This book not only reveals the mentality and national character of modern Japanese people but also attempts to explore and analyze the roots of their mannerisms. Everyone knows that the Japanese are generally more polite than other nationalities, but why is this so? Why do they embrace a relaxed attitude when being served by others? Surely, there must be specific reasons to account for these observations. Delving into the social values of the Japanese, why do they value loyalty and commitment so much? How long have they been upholding these virtues? Why, when interrogated by the police, even without being beaten or tortured, do they easily confess guilt for crimes that they have not committed? What are the reasons for such behaviors? All these questions and more are answered in this engaging and informative book.

Black Star Over Japan

Black Star Over Japan

At the time of original publication the author argued that contemporary forces within Japan were combining to create a strong movement for revision of the constitution and for the acquisition of nuclear weapons by renewed and powerful military establishment. The American government, which had encouraged rearmament, was beginning to wonder about the world effect of an economically powerful rearmed Japan and was weighing the consequences of considering Japan its only major ally in East Asia. Albert Axelbank suggests that shifting international politics and the conservative momentum in Japan make revision of the constitution and the development of Japanese militarism and nuclear weapons almost inevitable.

The Success Of 7-Eleven Japan

When analyzing 7-Eleven Japan’s advanced and innovative management style, the authors of this book highlight the existence of the integrated information system. This is because of the key role it plays not only in forming this firm’s corporate strategy but also in developing its functional strategies for logistic support, merchandising and store operations. The authors explore the integrated information system, a symbol of the competitiveness of 7-Eleven Japan.

New Times in Modern Japan

New Times in Modern Japan

$29.95

New Times in Modern Japan concerns the transformation of time–the reckoning of time–during Japan’s Meiji period, specifically from around 1870 to 1900. Time literally changed as the archipelago synchronized with the Western imperialists’ reckoning of time. The solar calendar and clock became standard timekeeping devices, and society adapted to the abstractions inherent in modern notions of time. This set off a cascade of changes that completely reconfigured how humans interacted with each other and with their environment–a process whose analysis carries implications for other non-Western societies as well. By examining topics ranging from geology, ghosts, childhood, art history, and architecture to nature as a whole, Stefan Tanaka explores how changing conceptions of time destabilized inherited knowledge and practices and ultimately facilitated the reconfiguration of the archipelago’s heterogeneous communities into the liberal-capitalist nation-state, Japan. However, this revolutionary transformation–where, in the words of Lewis Mumford, “the clock, not the steam engine,” is the key mechanism of the industrial age–has received little more than a footnote in the history of Japan. This book’s innovative focus on time not only shifts attention away from debates about the failure (or success) of “modernization” toward how individuals interact with the overlay of abstract concepts upon their lives; it also illuminates the roles of history as discourse and as practice in this reconfiguration of society. In doing so, it will influence discussions about modernity well beyond the borders of Japan.

This collection of essays by leading scholars and diplomats involved with the area examines the key political and economic issues facing Japan, Russia, and their neighbors since the end of the Cold War. The main goal is to analyze recent developments in Moscow-Tokyo bilateral relations and their growing interest in closer economic engagement, stability, and regional cooperation. The volume provides readers with an in-depth analysis of the very problems and opportunities that compelled the national leaders of Japan and Russia to drastically change the format and contents of the dialogue, to address the most critical issues not only of the moment but also for the future. The volume is a crucial resource for scholars, policy makers, and students involved with Asia-Pacific economic cooperation and Japanese and Russian foreign policy.

Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for automotive aftermarket products in Japan. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on automotive aftermarket products. Chapter 3 is also a stand-alone report that I have authored. It covers proxy pro-forma financial indicators of firms operating in Japan. I use the word “proxy” because the provided figures only cover a “what if” scenario, based on actual operating results for firms in Japan. The two measures of greatest relevance to architectural design services are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. This report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for architectural design services in Japan. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to architectural design services. This topic is discussed in Chapter 2 using work carried out in Japan on behalf of American firms and authored by the United States government (typically commercial attachés or similar persons in local offices of the U.S. Department of State). Reading Colonial Japan

Reading Colonial Japan

$24.95

By any measure, Japan’s modern empire was formidable. The only major non-western colonial power in the 20th century, Japan controlled a vast area of Asia and numerous archipelagos in the Pacific Ocean. The massive extraction of resources and extensive cultural assimilation policies radically impacted the lives of millions of Asians and Micronesians, and the political, economic, and cultural ramifications of this era are still felt today. The Japanese empire lasted from 1869-1945. During this time, how was the Japanese imperial project understood, imagined, and lived? Reading Colonial Japan is a unique anthology that aims to deepen knowledge of Japanese colonialism(s) by providing an eclectic selection of translated Japanese primary sources and analytical essays that illuminate Japan’s many and varied colonial projects. The primary documents highlight how central cultural production and dissemination were to the colonial effort, while accentuating the myriad ways colonialism permeated every facet of life. The variety of genres the explored includes legal documents, children’s literature, cookbooks, serialized comics, and literary texts by well-known authors of the time. These cultural works, produced by a broad spectrum of “ordinary” Japanese citizens (a housewife in Manchuria, settlers in Korea, manga artists and fiction writers in mainland Japan, and so on), functioned effectively to reinforce the official policies that controlled and violated the lives of the colonized throughout Japan’s empire. By making available and analyzing a wide-range of sources that represent “media” during the Japanese colonial period, Reading Colonial Japan draws attention to the powerful role that language and imagination played in producing the material realities of Japanese colonialism.

Lessons from PISA for Japan

For decades Japan has remained at or near the top of international assessments of student learning; and in the past decade, students in Japan have become more engaged in learning. However, the government aspires to improve learning outcomes even further. Strong Performers and Successful Reformers in Education: Lessons from PISA for Japan focuses on how Japan is reforming its education system not only to produce better learning outcomes, but to equip students with the skills they need to navigate through the unpredictable labour market of the future and to participate in society as active citizens. This is the second in a series of reports examining how education systems are handling the challenge of preparing their students for a world of interconnected populations, rapid technological change, and instantaneous availability of vast amounts of information. Like the first volume, Strong Performers and Successful Reformers in Education: Lessons from PISA for the United States , this report presents examples from other countries with consistently high-performing education systems or countries that, by redesigning policies and practices, have been able to improve their education outcomes, as measured by the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the world’s most comprehensive and rigorous survey of students’ skills and attitudes towards learning.

The Japan Football League is the 3rd tier of the Japanese association football league system, following J. League Division 1 and J. League Division 2. Also known as the JFL, it is generally considered as the top amateur league in Japan although in reality it is a semiprofessional league as many fulltime footballers play in the league. The Japan Football League started from the 1999 season when the second division of J. League (J2) was also born. Until then, J. League consisted of only one division and the former JFL was the second highest division. Out of 16 teams who played the last season of the former JFL, 9 decided and were accepted to play in J2 and the other 7 teams as well as Yokogawa Electric, the winners of the resional league playoff, formed the new Japan Football League. These 8 teams together with Yokohama F.C. that was allowed to participate as a special case after the merger of Yokohama Fl gels and Yokohama Marinos competed in the inaugural 1999 season. War and Conscience in Japan

$64.99

One of Japan’s most important intellectuals, Nambara Shigeru defended Tokyo Imperial University against its rightist critics and opposed Japan’s war. His poetic diary (1936D1945), published only after the war, documents his profound disaffection. In 1945 Nambara became president of Tokyo University and was an eloquent and ardent spokesman for academic freedom. In this first English-language collection of his key work, historian and translator Richard H. Minear introduces Nambara’s career and thinking before presenting translations of the most important of Nambara’s essays, poems, and speeches. A courageous but lonely voice of conscience, Nambara is one of the few mid-century Japanese to whom we can turn for inspiration during that dark period in world history.

Policy Entrepreneurship and Elections in Japan

Policy Entrepreneurship and Elections in Japan

$148

Ozawa Ichir? is one of the most important figures in Japanese politics, having held the positions of Chief Secretary of the Liberal Democrat Party and, after defection from the LDP, President of the Democratic Party of Japan. Ozawa has distinctive ideas that set him apart from the average Japanese politician, he believes in the concept of the independence of the individual, as opposed to the importance of the group, and as a policy entrepreneur he has had a huge impact on political change not only advocating but precipitating institutional change in a key political area the election system. Using extensive interview data from key players in the political arena, this book examines Ozawa’s struggle to normalize alternation in office between two competing political parties particularly significant given the results of the 2009 election which handed over power to the Democratic Party of Japan and how he has used his entrepreneurial talents to precipitate and carry out institutional change. Not only a political biography, but also an in-depth analysis of the Japanese political and electoral systems, this book will be of huge interest to anyone interested in Japanese politics and electoral systems.

Defense of Japan 1945

$14.95

In 1945, with her fleet destroyed and her armies beaten, the only thing that stood between Japan and an Allied invasion was the numerous coastal defence positions that surrounded the islands. This is the first book to take a detailed look at the Japanese home island fortifications that were constructed during 1941-45. Utilizing diagrams, specially commissioned artwork, and sources previously unavailable in English, Steven Zaloga examines these defences in the context of a possible Allied invasion, constructing various arguments for one of the greatest ‘what if’ scenarios of World War II, and helping to explain why the Americans decided to go ahead with a nuclear option. Britain and Japan in the Twentieth Century

Britain and Japan in the Twentieth Century

$89

After the horrors of World War II in Asia – not least the systematic appalling mistreatment of Allied prisoners-of-war by the Japanese military – few would have predicted that Britain's relationship with Japan would flourish into a booming partnership of economic interdependence by the start of the twenty-first century. This ambitious examination of Anglo-Japanese relations over the course of the 20th century charts the fascinating history of how both nations overcame many years of prejudice and bitter conflict to form a bond fused by financial, political and military cooperation. In the 1930s, many Japanese became convinced that their exports were being kept out of India by British tariffs and it was not until the 1980s that the British government fully accepted the futility of any protectionist impulse and encouraged Japanese companies to invest in Britain. Today, each country not only assists the other economically but also no longer blames the other for its own domestic problems."Britain and Japan in the Twentieth Century" elucidates how both nations have struggled to achieve stability and harmony in their relations with each other in the face of contrasting cultural identities.

It is part of the Eastern Army in the Japan Ground SelfDefense Force. The Brigade serves as Japans elite paratrooper unit meant to counter against either guerrillas or enemy special forces units. Under the Brigade is the Guide Unit, serving as its NEO (Non combatant Evacuation Operations) unit. Currently, they are attached to current homeland defense and international combat operations under the Central Readiness Force. The unit is being likened similarly to the Western Army Infantry Regiment and the Japanese Special Operations Group, since these units are some of Japans only Special Forces units with an offensive capability as some of Japans other Special Forces units are assigned to CT or defensive duties. Their presence in the JGSDF has served the organization as a morale booster. Shibaraku: Memories of Japan 19261946

$25.12

Early in the month of September 1945, a small band of American soldiers on a reconnaissance mission through the central mountain region of Honshu, main island of Japan, arrived in Karuizawa. How they happened upon this tiny remote village remains a mystery, except as it turned out, Karuizawa offered the only habitable accommodation for miles in any direction. By the cessation of hostilities, due to unrelenting bombing attacks, almost every close by city and town stood in pathetic ruins. Here they found us, a motley colony of ragged, halfstarved westerners from almost every type of background, thrown together, huddled in drafty, uncomfortable shelters away from cities now ravaged by war. Priests, nuns, diplomats, displaced businessmen, stranded sailors, Jewish refugees, White Russians, Europeans and Middle Easterners, including of course, my own family, one of the few Armenians finding themselves caught in Japan at the commencement of hostilities of World War II. The informal, easygoing, friendly manner of the Americans soon captivated all. Thus the occupation of a defeated nation commenced, and for my family and me, at least, changed our lives forever. Economic Overview of Japan

Economic Overview of Japan

$45.41

Sony, Toyota, Samurai and Kamikaze these words dont seem to have a lot of similarity in common, but they all four symbolize the aggressive Japanese mentality with its urge for expanding the national economy and the nations glory. In the 1980s, Japan pioneered a new kind of superpower. Tokyo had no army to speak of, no puppet regimes to prop up, and no proxy wars to mind. Just an economy. What made Japan a superpower, more than just a wealthy country, was the way its great firms staked claim to a collective intellectual high ground that left competitors, even in the United States, scrambling to reverseengineer Japanese successes. Seeking guidance on everything from quality circles to just in time inventory management, U.S. corporate executives bought stacks of books on Japanese management techniques. The key to Japans economic ascendance was not ideology, at least not by Cold War standards; but it was a method, it drove the most dynamic economy of the era, and it was indisputably Japanese. Douglas McGray explains it correctly. The continued success of the Japanese companies at the different world markets and especially at the markets in Europe was absolutely impressing and overwhelming and for some people even frightening. With extremely high growth rates, the country developed in only 30 years from a small and nearly unnoticed industrial nation to one of the few leading economic powers in the world. With this paper I want to give an overall view on Japan and try to investigate what exactly stands behind this economic wonder . Combines material previously published as Warrior 29: Ashigaru 1467-1649, Warrior 64: Ninja AD 1460-1650, Warrior 70: Japanese Warrior Monks AD 949-1603, with a new section on Samurai, new images, and a new introduction and conclusion. The samurai remain the best known warriors of medieval Japan, but they were by no means the only fighting elite. There were the ashigaru, who were first recruited to swell army numbers but later became a vital part of any samurai force. Trained to protect their monasteries, warrior monks were formidable enemies, mastering a range of martial traditions. Finally, the Ninja catered to an increasing demand for spies, informants and sometimes assassins, developing the arts of armed and unarmed combat and explosives. From the Hardcover edition.

When the play began every one paid close attention, for it was a great historical play, and the Japanese go to the theatre and take their children there in order to learn history. There are represented the old wars, the old feuds, the struggle of Daimio against Daimioin short, the history of old Japan. When an actor gave pleasure, the audience flung their hats on the stage. These were collected by an attendant, and kept until the owners redeemed them by giving a present. For six hours O Hara San and Taro sat in their little box, laughing, shouting, eating, and drinking, while the play went on. Then it was over, for it was only a short play, at a cheap theatre. Ah said their father, when I was a boy we had real plays. Housing Markets in the United States and Japan

Housing Markets in the United States and Japan

$39

Although Japan and the United States are the world’s leading economies, there are significant differences in the ways their wealth is translated into living standards. A careful comparison of housing markets illustrates not only how living standards in the two countries differ, but also reveals much about saving patterns and how they affect wealth accumulation. In this volume, ten essays discuss the evolution of housing prices, housing markets and personal savings, housing finance, commuting, and the impact of public policy on housing markets. The studies reveal surprising differences in housing investment in the two countries. For example, because down payments in Japan are much higher than in the United States, Japanese tend to delay home purchases relative to their American counterparts. In the United States, the advent of home equity credit may have reduced private saving overall. This book is the first comparison of housing markets in Japan and the United States, and its findings illuminate the effects of housing markets on productivity growth, business investment, and trade.

Koreans in Japan by Ryang, Sonia [Paperback]

$71.6

Koreans in Japan are a barely known minority, not only in the West but also within Japan itself. This pioneering study analyses these relations in the context of the particular conditions and constraints that Koreans face in Japanese society. The contributors cover a wide range of topics, including: the legal and social status of Koreans in Japan; the history of Korean colonial displacement and postcolonial division during the Cold War; ethnic education; and womens selfexpression. These studies serve to reveal the highly resilient and diverse reality of this minority group, whilst simultaneously highlighting the fact that despite recent improvement legal, social and economic constraints continue to exist in their lives. Port Security Equipment and Services in Japan

Port Security Equipment and Services in Japan

$195

How to Strategically Evaluate Japan. Perhaps the most efficient way of evaluating Japan is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. The two measures of greatest relevance to port security equipment and services are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. This report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for port security equipment and services in Japan. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to port security equipment and services. Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for port security equipment and services in Japan. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on port security equipment and services. Chapter 3 is also a stand-alone report that I have authored. It covers proxy pro-forma financial indicators of firms operating in Japan. I use the word “proxy” because the provided figures only cover a “what if” scenario, based on actual operating results for firms in Japan. The numbers are only indicative of an av

Japan's Beach Erosion

Japan’s Beach Erosion

$144

Beaches in Japan have been eroding since the 1970s as a result of the artificial land alterations. Approximately 3000 fishing ports and 1000 commercial ports have been built nationwide, as well as 2532 large dams being constructed in the upstream basins of large rivers. Due to the port and dam developments, fluvial sand supply has significantly reduced resulting in shoreline recession around the river mouths. Continuous sand supply along the coastline has also been obstructed by the port breakwaters. The formation of wave shelter zone by the port breakwaters induce longshore sand transport, thereby leading to an accretion of large amount of sand in the wave shelter zone and erosion in the surrounding area. Thus, almost all causes of the beach erosion in Japan are due to anthropogenic factors. The exact situation of the beach erosion has never been clear in literatures that are written in Japanese, or in English. Coastal engineers can and should learn from these results, otherwise the same situation and problems, which were induced by excessive coastal development without protection measures and due attention given to nearby coasts, will recur throughout the world.Textbooks on coastal engineering, that were already published, describe only the theoretical fundamentals of the subject, but lack the practical perspectives and field studies. The book examines many coastal areas as examples, highlighting the various erosion factors which should be avoided elsewhere globally. This book was first published in Japanese in 2004, and was translated into English by the present author.

Bushido : The Soul Of Japan

Bushido : The Soul Of Japan

$10.39

A century ago, when Japan was transforming itself from an isolated feudal society into a modern nation, a Japanese educator queried about the ethos of his people composed this seminal work, which with his numerous other writings in English made him the best, known Japanese writer in the West during his lifetime. He found in Bushido, the Way of the Warrior, the sources of the virtues most admired by his people: rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, sincerity, honor, loyalty and self-control. His approach to his task was eclectic and far-reaching. On the one hand, he delved into the indigenous traditions, into Buddhism, Shintoism, Confucianism and the moral guidelines handed down over hundreds of years by Japan's samurai and sages. On the other hand, he sought similarities and contrasts by citing not only Western philosophers and statesmen, but also the shapers of European and American thought and civilization going back to the Romans, the Greeks and Biblical times. This book is a classic to which generations of scholars and laymen alike have long referred for insights into the character of the Japanese people. And all of its many readers in the past have been amply rewarded, as will be all those who turn to its pages in the next and future decades.

The Green Archipelago: Forestry in PreIndustrial Japan

The Green Archipelago: Forestry in PreIndustrial Japan

$100.62

Every foreign traveler in Japan is delighted by the verdant forestshrouded mountains that thrust skyward from one end of the island chain to the other. The Japanese themselves are conscious of the lush green of their homeland, which they sometimes refer to as the green archipelago. Yet, based on its fragile geography and centuries of extremely dense human occupation, Japan today should be an impoverished, slumridden, peasant society subsisting on a barren, eroded moonscape characterized by bald mountains and debrisstrewn lowlands. In fact, as Conrad Totman argues in this pathbreaking work based on prodigious research, this lush verdue is not a monument to natures benevolence and Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, but the hardearned result of generations of human toil that have converted the archipelago into one great forest preserve. Indeed, the author shows that until the late 1600s Japan was well on her way to ecological disaster due to exploitative forestry. During the Tokugawa period, however, an extraordinary change took place resulting in a system of regenerative forestry that averted the devastation of Japans forests. The Green Archipelago is the only major Westernlanguage work on this subject and a landmark not only in Japanese history, but in the history of the environment. Aging Issues in the United States and Japan

Aging Issues in the United States and Japan

$39

The population base in both the United States and Japan is growing older and, as those populations age, they provoke heretofore unexamined economic consequences. This cutting-edge, comparative volume, the third in the joint series offered by the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, explores those consequences, drawing specific attention to four key areas: incentives for early retirement; savings, wealth, and asset allocation over the life cycle; health care and health care reform; and population projections. Given the undeniable global importance of the Japanese and U.S. economies, these innovative essays shed welcome new light on the complex correlations between aging and economic behavior. This insightful work not only deepens our understanding of the Japanese and American economic landscapes but, through careful examination of the comparative social and economic data, clarifies the complex relation between aging societies, public policies, and economic outcomes.

I Love Japan by Briggs, Craig [Paperback]

I Love Japan by Briggs, Craig [Paperback]

$27.83

Japan is an intriguing country and culture that both delights and confounds the visitor. In I Love Japan, Craig Briggs gives you uncommonly insightful yet amusing insights into living, working and playing in Japan. In this collection of short and witty essays, Briggs brings you Japanese culture real and unfilteredthrough the eyes of a keenly observant, sensitive, and often times smartassed foreigner.About traditional Japanese cuisine: Part of the enjoyment of eating soba is the slurpingtaking air in rapidly over the soba and enhancing the dining experience. Choking on soba, however, does not enhance the dining experience. And losing your lunch in such a traditional setting will also make you lose face. Experience the tradition of sumo wrestling and cherry blossom viewing. Understand the danger of climbing Mt. Fuji or of just taking a commuter train at rush hour. Learn and laugh about quirky Japanese refinements to common, often unsightly acts like public drunkenness and trash recycling. And, visit some of the countries surrounding Japan and be thankful you live in Japan instead.Part travel guide and part survival kit, I Love Japan is the only book with the courage to tell you just what really is happening in Japan. Japan’s Defense Policy And Bureaucratic Politics 1976-2007

$55.19

It is a well known fact that Japan spends only a small percentage of her gross national product on defense. What is not well known however is the fact that Japan’s defense budget ranks among the top in the world and that her self-defense forces are considered to be amongst the best conventional armed forces in the world. Since empirical studies concerning Japan’s military expansion are rare both in Japanese and English the book takes up this neglected area. It examines Japan’s military expansion and the decision-making of her defense policy between 1976 and 2007 focusing on the National Defense Program outline and the guidelines for United States-Japan Defense Cooperation. This book deals with how the bureaucratic politics model applies to the case ofJapan’s defense policy and demonstrates some similarities and differences between Japanese and United States decision-making.It is a well known fact that Japan spends only a small percentage of her gross national product on defense. Japan:Doing Business in a Unique Culture

Japan:Doing Business in a Unique Culture

$16.5

This book is essential reading for all those managers, investors, and traders as well as government officials who do business in or might in the future have dealings with Japan. More than most people living in a rich, developed country, the Japanese still place great store on traditional values and cling to a culture that is both varied and unique. Business etiquette and general good manners are not only dissimilar, but they are strictly prescribed and adhered to by those with whom you will negotiate and socialize. Getting things right can only help you, but it is incredibly easy to get things wrong and never even know it. Politeness dictates that you will not be told when you make mistakes or irritate people, but when you inevitably do so, the price you pay, as a minimum, can be to suffer slow negotiations with the attendant increased costs in time and money. At the worst, you might lose an entire contract or fail to break into the Japanese market at all. This book will help you to adjust quickly, make friends easily, and interact more effectively; all of these can help you achieve your goals more rapidly, gain repeat business, and generally be more successful. You will learn many of the basic concepts of this fascinating culture that will help you to understand better what is going on. You will discover how the Japanese like to do business, who should be on your team, how you should behave for greater success, what to expect at meetings, and what you should do there. Advice and hints for living in Japan and running a company there are supplied and there is a whole chapter on what to expect if you are a woman or your team includes women. A further chapter covers the important issue of what to do when a Japanese team visits you in your country. Written by Dr. Kevin Bucknall who has lived and worked for decades in Asia and Australasia, this book should be a welcome addition to the library of any adult who deals with or works in that fascinating but mysterious country, Japan. Boson Books also offers this book and Chinese Business Etiquette and Culture by Dr. Kevin Bucknall in print. For an author photo, bio, and a sample read visit bosonbooks.com.

Language Policy in Japan By Gottlieb, Nanette

Language Policy in Japan By Gottlieb, Nanette

$132.82

This book examines two important issues in language policy in Japan today: first, and most prominently, increasing migrationinduced multilingualism which has ramifications both for providing Japaneselanguage learning opportunities for migrants and forthe use and teaching of languages other than Japanese and English; and second, the influence of electronic technologies such as computers and cell phones on the way in which Japanese is written. These two developments, of course, have occurred in many other countries beside Japan. What makes the Japanese case particularly interesting is that Japan does not yet consider itself to be a country of immigration and hence has only recently shown signs of an awareness of the importance of providing both language teaching and multilingual services for nonJapanese workers, so that what policy development does exist in this area is ad hoc and fragmented rather than centrally planned and coordinated at national level. It also has in place a set of longstanding policies pertaining to the officially sanctioned use of the writing system, policies which were arrived at after a great deal of division and debate, that shape the way in which Japanese and nonJapanese children alike learn to read and write in Japanese schools. In both these cases, official and individual views are strongly informed by language ideologies of various kinds Author: Gottlieb, Nanette Subtitle: The Challenge of Change Publication Date: 2011/12/29 Number of Pages: 207 Binding Type: Hardcover Language: English Depth: 0.50 Width: 6.00 Height: 9.00

Japan and China in East Asian Integration

Japan and China in East Asian Integration

$65.9

"This is an excellent and versatile textbook, as well as an intervention in the scholarly debate on the Asian economies. During the last few years Lim has paid particular attention to China, realizing that the Chinese and Japanese economies are complementary and dependent on each other. The chapters are free-standing, which makes it easier to use the book as a text, as the instructor can be selective, if needed." — Professor Hans C. Blomqvist, Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration, Helsinki, Finland "Professor Lim's book is not only a discussion of the Japanese upswing and decade-long plateau. Most of all it is about Japan's position in the interdependent economies of East and Southeast Asia. What this book convincingly demonstrates is that, despite the rise of China, the Japanese will remain a major source of expansion and innovation in ASEAN, in Asia and beyond." — Professor David Reisman, Department of Economics, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

After Matsuzo Wada has sold off the family’s lands and left his wife for another woman, his son Mitsuo is determined to support himself and his mother in the traditional manner, farming. All that remains of his ancestors’ lands is a hothouse, in which he grows tomatoes to sell to the housewives from the nearby apartment complex, built on a former rice field. When his childhood friend, Koji, becomes entangled in an adulterous love affair which ultimately destroys him and those around him, Mitsuo begins to see how the town’s hedonistic excesses are laying to waste not only the landscape, but also the communal and familial bonds and the values that once sustained them all.Translated from the Japanese by Lawrence J. Howell and Hikaru Morimoto.

In 2004 the Japanese economy was in a gravely depressed state, with little growth for nearly a decade. However, it would be wrong to call this period ‘the lost decade’ as many do. A better approach is to examine how a dynamic society, progressive in ways different from those which only generate growth in the GNP, has been built. This new economy pursues a new objective through new approaches, pursuing quality of life rather than raising the material standards of living.

Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing in Japan

Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing in Japan

$58.94

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Agriculture, forestry, and fishing form the primary sector of industry of the Japanese economy, together with the Japanese mining industry, but together they account for only 1.3 of gross national product. Only 15 of Japans land is suitable for cultivation, but the agricultural economy is highly subsidized and protected. Agriculture, forestry, and fishing dominated the Japanese economy until the 1940s, but thereafter declined into relative unimportance. In the late 19th century, these sectors had accounted for more than 80 of employment. Employment in agriculture declined in the prewar period, but the sector was still the largest employer by the end of World War II. It was further declined to 23.5 in 1965, 11.9 in 1977, and to 7.2 in 1988. The importance of agriculture in the national economy later continued its rapid decline, with the share of net agricultural production in GNP finally reduced between 1975 and 1989 from 4.1 to 3 In the late 1980s, 85.5 of Japans farmers were also engaged in occupations outside of farming, and most of these parttime farmers earned most of their income from nonfarming activities. Kitcho: Japan's Ultimate Dining Experience

Kitcho: Japan’s Ultimate Dining Experience

$29.69

“Through his innovative approach to cooking, Kunio Tokuoka reinvents the classic dishes of Kaiseki without deviating from the extraordinary history and tradition of Japanese cuisine. In this book, he shares the inspiration behind his dishes with reference to the seasons, art, natural history and culture of Japan and through the exquisite photographs, he gives a glimpse of the beauty and creativity of his extraordinary restaurant.” –Heston Blumenthal, Chef de Cuisine/Owner, The Fat Duck restaurant Kaiseki had its origins in the sixteenth century as an accompaniment to the Japanese tea ceremony. Over time, it has evolved into a highly formalized, artistic cuisine that celebrates the seasons by using only fresh, natural, local ingredients. Today, what we know as “kaiseki” owes much to Teiichi Yuki, founder of Kitcho restaurant in Kyoto and the creator of a contemporary version of this traditional cuisine. Kitcho continues to be world-renowned as the high temple of kaiseki; and its current chef and owner (and Yuki’s grandson), Kunio Tokuoka, is revered for his innovative and exquisite interpretations of kaiseki dishes. Now, with this book, readers will get a look behind the well-guarded doors at the secrets, recipes, presentation techniques, and philosophy of one of the world’s premiere restaurants. Chef Tokuoka stands at the top of his profession. Yet his approach to cooking is remarkably simple. How can he draw the best flavors for a hearty stock? How can he cook a fish dish so that it becomes a transforming experience for even the most jaded diner? Answer: Simply by finding the optimum way to prepare or cook each ingredient so as to draw out peak flavor. Over and over again, he demonstrates how he has reinvented an old technique or created new dishes to astonish loyal patrons. At Kitcho, a full-course meal is a multisensory experience to be savored on many levels. It can be a revelation. It can change the way people think about food. This book will do the same. From innovative cooking techniques to an artist’s touch in food arrangement, Kitcho: Japan’s Ultimate Dining Experience reveals every aspect of entertaining in the Japanese mode through brilliant photography; the chef’s recipe notes; and essays on cooking, food arrangement, Japanese aesthetics, food philosophy, and the exquisite Japanese art of entertaining at the table, penned by Nobuko Sugimoto, one of Japan’s leading food writers.

Soil, Fertilizer, and Plant Silicon Research in Japan

Soil, Fertilizer, and Plant Silicon Research in Japan

$160

Silicon (Si) plays a significant role in the resistance of plants to multiple stresses including biotic and abiotic stresses. Silicon is also the only element that does not damage plants when accumulated in excess. However, the contribution of Si to plant growth has been largely ignored due to its universal existence in the earth’s crust. From numerous intensive studies on Si, initiated in Japan about 80 years ago, Japanese scientists realized that Si was important for the healthy growth of rice and for stability of rice production. In a worldwide first, silicon was recognized as a valuable fertilizer in Japan. The beneficial effects of Si on rice growth in particular, are largely attributable to the characteristics of a silica gel that is accumulated on the epidermal tissues in rice. These effects are expressed most clearly under high-density cultivation systems with heavy applications of nitrogen. Si is therefore recognized now as an ”agronomically essential element” in Japan. Recently, Si has become globally important because it generates resistance in many plants to diseases and pests, and may contribute to reduced rates of application of pesticides and fungicides. Silicon is also now considered as an environment-friendly element. The achievements of Si research in Japan are introduced in this book, in relation to soils, fertilizers and plant nutrition.

The main purpose of this book is to shed light on the limitations of the American hegemony in occupied Japan. Previous studies share the assumption that the United States was in a near-monopoly position to shape the postwar development in Japan as well as in the Asia-Pacific region. The book goes on to modify the prevailing view that American hegemony not only eroded under its own weight, but was never absolute in any case. Japan, a former enemy, eventually became America’s main regional ally in the Asia-Pacific region.

Six days after an InStyle -worthy wedding in Los Angeles, Lisa Fineberg Cook left behind her little red Jetta, her manicurist of ten years, and her very best friend for the land of the rising sun. When her husband accepted a job teaching English in Nagoya, Japan, she imagined exotic weekend getaways, fine sushi dinners, and sake sojourns with glamorous expatriate friends. Instead, she’s the only Jewish girl on public transportation, and everyone is staring. Lisa longs for regular mani/pedis, valet parking, and gimlets with her girlfriends, but for the next year, she learns to cook, clean, commute, and shop like the Japanese, all the while adjusting to another foreign concept — marriage. Loneliness and frustration give way to new and unexpected friendships, the evolution of old ones, and a fresh understanding of what it means to feel different — until finally a world she never thought she’d fit into begins to feel home-like, if not exactly like home.

Mass Transportation Security Equipment and Services in Japan

How to Strategically Evaluate Japan. Perhaps the most efficient way of evaluating Japan is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. The two measures of greatest relevance to mass transportation security equipment and services are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. This report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for mass transportation security equipment and services in Japan. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to mass transportation security equipment and services. Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for mass transportation security equipment and services in Japan. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on mass transportation security equipment and services. Chapter 3 is also a stand-alone report that I have authored. It covers proxy pro-forma financial indicators of firms operating in Japan. I use the word “proxy” because the provided figures only cover a “what if” scenario, based on actual ope
