German Soldier
Is it true that not every German soldier was a stereotypical Nazi?

I heard that not every German soldier believed the same views as those Hitler attempted to impose on the German people. Didn’t every German solider during World War II follow Hitler?? (Not counting the German’s who disagreed but went with “the flow”)

What is required to be referred to as a Nazi German soldier?

What was the internal reasoning for a “non-Nazi” German soldier for invading Poland? Before Germany was under attack and invasion?

Nazi Party membership in Germany was less than 10% of the population.

Soldiers in the army therefore were, on the whole, not Nazis.Soldiers in armies have to obey orders (armies don’t work otherwise).Every member of the armed forces had to take an oath of allegiance to Hitler as the Head of State, and this reinforced obedience to orders.

Germany had a strong military tradition long before the Nazis, and conscription and service in the military had been a normal part of life for adult males in Prussia and Germany since the early 18th century. German armies before the Nazis had always been well trained and well disciplined. They did what they were ordered to do, whether or not they were Nazis or necessarily agreed with Nazi ideology.

Nazi soldiers were in the Waffen SS. Volunteers were required to prove Germanic ancestry back to the 18th century, and were trained as political as well as military soldiers. These men were Nazi party members who were fanatically devoted to Hitler and Nazi ideology.

The Unknown Soldier

Of all the million British dead of the First World War, only one – the Unknown Soldier – was ever returned to his native land. An anonymous symbol of all those lost without trace in the carnage of the battlefields, he was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey amid an outpouring of grief that brought the whole nation to a standstill, far outweighing even the emotion expressed over the death of Princess Diana over eighty years later. Inspired by this example, almost every combatant nation buried its own Unknown Soldier and the graves became the focus of a pilgrimage that still continues today.

Drawing on largely unpublished letters and diaries, Neil Hanson has resurrected the lives and experiences of three unknown soldiers – a Briton, a German and an American. Every word is based on the testimony of those who fought, those who died and those who mourned. Few books have ever shown the terrible reality of warfare in such compelling, unforgettable detail, or told such a moving story of human life and loss.

Amid all their sufferings, the common humanity of the men and their loved ones shines through. Each soldier lives on in the memory of his family to this day. They stand at the head of a ghost army three million strong, all of whom have no known grave. Their story is the story of the Unknown Soldier.

They are all infantrymen; none were commissioned officers. One is a German-speaking artist whose sole record is nineteen stunning watercolors that cover a year’s enlistment. Another is a free black from Syracuse, New York. Six are from slave states, one of whom was a Unionist. Drawing from the more than 60,000 documents housed in the privately held Gilder Lehrman Collection, Robert E. Bonner has movingly reconstructed the experiences of sixteen Civil War soldiers, using their own accounts to knit together a ground-level view of the entire conflict. The immediacy of diaries and the intimacy of letters to loved ones accompany the humor of an anonymous cartoonist from Massachusetts, the vivid paintings of Private Henry Berckhoff. All reproduced for the first time in The Soldier’s Pen , the documents and images that Bonner weaves together, providing context and explanation as required, powerfully re-create the day-to-day lives of the soldiers who fought and died for Union and Confederacy. Not since the 2000 publication of Robert Sneden’s paintings and papers in Eye of the Storm has a collection of original Civil War documents so evocatively captured the war.

Two couples–one British, the other American–meet at a German spa. They form a pleasant friendship. But slowly this veneer of normalcy is torn away, revealing deception and infidelity. This version, aired on Masterpiece Theatre in the 1980s, maintains the novel’s nonlinear structure, using flashbacks to reveal the gap between life as it is perceived, and life as it really is.

Summer of My German Soldier, Bette Greene’s first and best-known novel, chronicles one summer in the life of a twelve-year-old Jewish girl in the rural South. First published in 1973, it was an overwhelming critical success and has gone on to become a classic of juvenile literature. The book was nominated for the National Book Award, and won the New York Times Outstanding Book Award, the Golden Kite Society’s children’s book writer’s award, and the American Library Association’s Notable Book Award. In 1978 Greene published a sequel, Morning Is a Long Time Coming. The novel takes its inspiration in part from the author’s own childhood. Like her heroine, Greene grew up in a small Arkansas town at the end of World War II. Her parents owned a country store, and they were the only Jewish family in a Protestant community. The story explores the tensions created by these kinds of ethnic and religious differences. Published the year that the Vietnam conflict ended, her book also acts as an allegory about the prejudices and fears of late 1960s and early 1970s America.

At the fashionable German spa town Bad Nauheim, two wealthy, fin de siecle couples — one British, the other American — meet for their yearly assignation. As their story moves back and forth in time between 1902 and 1914, the fragile surface propriety of the pre — World War I society in which these four characters live is ruptured — revealing deceit, hatred, infidelity, and betrayal. "The Good Soldier" is Edward Ashburnham, who, as an adherent to the moral code of the English upper class, is nonetheless consumed by a passion for women younger than his wife — a stoic but fallible figure in what his American friend, John Dowell, calls "the saddest story I ever heard." Not just for herself, but for her two young daughters and for her mother-in-law, for whom she cares while her husband is away fighting. What she does not expect is that she will fall in love with one of the enigmatic German soldiers who take up residence in the house next door to her home. As their relationship intensifies, so do the pressures on Vivienne. Food and resources grow scant, and the restrictions placed upon the residents of the island grow with each passing week. Though Vivienne knows the perils of her love affair with Gunther, she believes that she can keep their relationship—and her family—safe. But when she becomes aware of the full brutality of the Occupation, she must decide if she is willing to risk her personal happiness for the life of a stranger. “With its stunning and evocative description of the Guernsey landscape, its subtle and astute depiction of a woman’s relationship with her children, her lover, and her husband, this absorbing novel is utterly beguiling.” —Rosamund Lupton, author of Sister

Set in Berlin just after the end of World War II, a brilliant thriller about the end of one war and the beginning of another, by the bestselling author of Los Alamos . Berlin, 1945. Jake Geismar, former Berlin correspondent for CBS, has managed to wangle one of the coveted press slots for the Potsdam Conference. His assignment: a series of articles on the American occupation of postwar Berlin. His personal agenda: to find Lena, the German mistress he left behind at the outbreak of the war. When he stumbles on a murder–an American soldier washed up on the shore of the conference grounds–he thinks he has found the key that will unlock his Berlin story. What he finds instead is a larger story of corruption and intrigue reaching deep into the heart of the occupation and a city not only physically but morally devastatated, where children scavenge for food in the rubble, sex can be had for a cigarette, and the black market is the only means of survival. Berlin at zero hour is like nowhere else–a tragedy, and a feverish party after the end of the world. And nothing is simple–not the murder of a soldier and not any of the lives, American and German, that Jake encounters as he tries to solve it. More unsolvable still is the larger crime that hangs over everything in 1945, a crime so huge it seems beyond punishment. At once a murder mystery, a love story, and a riveting portrait of a unique time and place, The Good German is a historical thriller of the first rank.

The Boy Who Went to War: The Story of a Reluctant German Soldier in WWII

$12.99

A powerful and true story of warfare and human survival that exposes a side of World War II that is unknown by many this is the story of Wolfram Aïchele, a boy whose childhood was stolen by a war in which he had no choice but to fight. Giles Milton has been a writer and historian for many years, writing about people and places that history has forgotten. But it took his young daughter’s depiction of a swastika on an imaginary family shield – the swastika representing Germany – for Giles to uncover the incredible, dark story of his own family and his father-in-law’s life under Hitler’s regime. As German citizens during World War II, Wolfram and his Bohemian, artist parents survived one of the most brutal eras of history. Wolfram, who was only nine years old when Hitler came to power, lived through the rise and fall of the Third Reich, from the earliest street marches to the final defeat of the Nazi regime. Conscripted into Hitler’s army, he witnessed the brutality of war – first on the Russian front and then on the Normandy beaches. Seen through German eyes and written with remarkable sensitivity, The Boy Who Went to War is a powerful story of warfare and human survival and a reminder to us all that civilians on both sides suffered the consequences of Hitler’s war .

The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier

$5.49

More memoir than diary, this slim volume contains the reminiscences of a young German conscript into the army of Napoleon in the campaigns of 1806, 1807, 1809, and 1812-13. As such, it represents one of the few historical documents that portray the life and death of common soldiers of the period. As the army fought its way back and forth across Eastern Europe, young Walter encountered Poles, Russians, Jews, and other groups, and his descriptions of his interactions with these “others” illuminates attitudes and prejudices of German troops of the period. The firsthand description of the retreat of a starving army from Moscow and the attendant breakdown of discipline and morale will interest military historians as well.

Charles Hudson VC was one of the twentieth century’s outstanding fighting soldiers. His military career through two world wars and in Russia in 1919 earned him a host of medals. He was also a man of deep feeling, an accomplished poet and, in many ways, a rebel. In this compelling biography, the author skilfully interweaves his own narrative insight with his father’s wartime journals and other unpublished material. The narrative includes detailed personal descriptions of the Battle of the Somme and other actions. It recounts the authoress Vera Brittain’s bitter reaction to the death of her brother Edward when under Hudson’s command in Italy in 1918 and tells how Hudson, out of compassion for her feelings, did not reveal the truth until he met her in 1934. It tells of the extraordinary affair in the summer of 1940, when the Secretary of State for War, Anthony Eden, asked a meeting of senior army commanders in the then beleaguered Britain whether, in the event of a successful German invasion, their soldiers would agree to be evacuated to Canada or whether they would insist on going home to support their families. The author examines Hudson’s motivation in both wars and delves deeply into his complex, and highly courageous, character.

At last in his own words Bob Dole tells his legendary World War II story — a personal odyssey of tremendous courage sacrifice and faith. In One Soldiers Story Bob Dole tells the moving inspirational story of his harrowing experience in World War II and how he overcame life-threatening injuries long before rising to the top of the U.S. Senate. As a platoon leader in the famed 10th Mountain Division twenty-one-year-old Bob Dole was gravely wounded on a hill in the Italian Alps just two weeks before the end of the war. Trying to pull his radioman to safety during a fire-fight against a fortified German position Dole was hit with shrapnel across his right shoulder and back. Over the next three years not expected to survive he lapsed in and out of a coma lost a kidney lost the use of his right arm and most of the feeling in his left arm. But he willed himself to live. Drawing on nearly 300 never-before-seen letters between him and his family during this period Dole offers a powerful vivid portrait of one mans struggle to survive in the closing moments of the war. With insight and candour Dole also focuses on the words actions and selfless deeds of countless American heroes with whom he served including two fellow injured soldiers who later joined him in the Senate capturing the singular qualities of his generation. He speaks here not as a politician but as a wounded G.I. who went on to become one of our nations most respected statesmen. In doing so he gives us a heartfelt story of uncommon bravery and personal faith — in himself his fellow man and a greater power. This is the World War II chronicle that America has been waiting for.

500 Days of Front Line Combat: The WWII Memoir of Ralph B. Schaps

$15.95

Made up of men from Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota, the 34th Infantry Red Bull Division was the first American division to sail for European Service in World War II. This is the account of one of these men, Ralph B. Schaps, a common soldier who saw over 500 days of front line combat – from North Africa to marching up the boot of Italy in pursuit of Rommel and Kesselring and the withdrawing German forces. After the 34th Division was inducted into federal service in February 1941, until May 1945, when ironically the German 34th Division surrendered to the American 34th Division near Milan, the reality of the hardships, fears and heroism of the front line soldier come to life in this personal history as told by one who was there.

800 Days on the Eastern Front: A Russian Soldier Remembers World War II

800 Days on the Eastern Front: A Russian Soldier Remembers World War II

$24.95

During his 800 days of war, Nikolai Litvin fought at the front lines in the ferocious tank battles at Kursk, was wounded three times, and witnessed unspeakable brutalities against prisoners and civilians. But he survived to pen this brief but powerful memoir of his wartime experiences. Barely out of his teens, Litvin served for three years in the Red Army on the killing fields of the Eastern Front. His memoir presents an unadorned, candid narrative of the common soldier’s lot in Stalin’s army. Unlike the memoirs of Russian officers–usually preoccupied with large military operations and political concerns–this narrative offers a true ground-level view of World War Il’s deadliest theater. It puts a begrimed human face on the enormous toll of casualties and provides a rare perspective on battles that were instrumental in the defeat of the German army. Litvin’s varied roles, ranging from antitank gunner at Kursk to heavy machine gunner in a penal battalion to staff driver for the 352nd Rifle Division, offer unique perspectives on the Red Army in World War II as it fought from the Ukraine deep into the German heartland. Litvin documents such significant battles as Operation Kutuzov, Operation Bagration, and the German counterattack on the Narev, while also providing unique personal observations on fording the Dnepr River under enemy fire, the rape of German women by Russian troops, and literally seeing his life pass before his eyes as he watched a Stuka’s bomb fall directly on his position. Originally written in 1962, with events still fresh in his mind, Litvin’s memoir lay unpublished and unseen until translator Stuart Britton and a Russian colleague approached him about publishing it inEnglish. Britton interviewed Litvin to flesh out the details of his original recollection and annotated the resulting work to provide historical context for the campaigns and battles in which he participated. Remarkably free of Soviet-era propaganda, this gem of a memoir provides a vie

A Good Idea of Hell

A Good Idea of Hell

$40.95

Echoing from the mountainous Vosges front of World War I come the rare accounts of an elite French foot soldier–a chasseur a pied. Robert Pellissier, born in France in 1882, had grown up in the United States and was teaching at Stanford when the Great War broke out in his homeland. Returning as a volunteer, he saw uninterrupted month of trench warfare in the Vosges mountains of Alsace, the only region where French troops actually captured German territory, a sector largely neglected in World War I literature. Pellissier’s diary and his letters to relatives in America show a panorama of this ghastly war: from the horror of being under fire with three thousand German shells falling on the French troops every day to the monotony of long quiet hours spent in cold, wet trenches. He writes of the grinding and indecisive character of the fighting in the Vosges and of the almost ritualistic shelling and limited tactical offensives, such as the attack at Steinbach in December 1914. His later letters were written from the hospital, from officer training school, and from the front at the Somme. He relays news of all the major battlefields–Flanders, Verdun, Russia, Austria, Gallipoli, Italy, Serbia, and the Suez. He also comments on the new technology that changed the nature of war: the machine gun, new airplanes, U-boats, improved artillery, barbed wire, and poison gases. Drama and a sympathetic human voice combine to make this account of a little-reported French front a valuable addition to the literature on World War I. Whether visiting the battlefields of Europe, researching the history of the war, or sitting in an armchair at home, readers will find Pellissier a reliable and personable guide.

Hirschka Varshavtchik”s story, written by his son, Sidd Raichel is a personal narrative as well as a dramatic family history. It is also, as described by the son himself in his prologue, a quest that each of us has: I grew up confused, surrounded by unuttered family memories I couldn”t comprehend. I was all alone in this dark, dark place, where even language itself had failed me. Bits of family stories–true or not, it did not matter–came in hushed breaths. My brother told me once that we got out name Reischer because our father killed a German soldier and took his identity papers. I clutched to each new phrase as a precious piece of the puzzle to answer the questions: Where did I come from? and Who am I?

Though it went on to become the most famous German formation of World War II, the men of the early Afrikakorps had no experience of desert warfare. Yet, in a matter of months, they proved themselves more than capable of surviving in the harsh conditions of the North African desert and managed to force their British enemy as far back as Egypt. Led by the celebrated General Rommel, the soldiers of the Afrikakorps were proud of their unique status and a strong esprit de corps soon emerged that survives to this day. This book examines the living conditions, training, equipment and battle experiences of a typical AfrikaKorps soldier. –P. [iv] of cover.
