Does anyone know where there is a Time Crisis II arcade machine in London?
Time Crisis II is by far my favorite of the Time Crisis series. My brother and I used to play it all the time at the height of it’s popularity, when it could be found in every arcade, but nowadays most places only have the newer Time Crisis games (which are so difficult that you have to spend about £20 to get a good amount of playtime on them. Time Crisis II on the other hand could be completed with £1).
Anyway, I’ve had a look around and I can’t find one anywhere. Has anyone seen one?
My thanks in advance.
there isn’t anymore time crisis 2 machines anymore as they don’t make them anymore.time crisis 3 is as hard as time crisis 2 4 is just slightly harder and also if you think they are hard try completing House of the dead 3/4 in the arcade on 1 credit it is very hard

Crisis! $18.22 "He can save the future… If only he could remember the past." Bill Johnson is a man with a future… well, with many futures. But now he’s in the present, and he has absolutely no memory of who he is, where he comes from, or what he’s done. All he knows is what he’s just read in the letter he apparently wrote to himself: that he was instrumental in saving the world, again. And that’s his job: to save the world, and then to lose all memory of having done so. Plagued by this lack of memory, and by the strange dreams of horrific futures that will come to pass if he doesn’t act, Johnson moves from nightmare to nightmare, helping to fix what will go wrong. He doesn’t know if he can keep it up, but he knows that he has to. It’s his job, his mission in time, to avert the impending Crisis In 2007, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America honored James Gunn with its Grand Master Award. Gunn began his writing career in 1948 and has since published 26 novels and almost 100 short stories. His work ("The Cave of Night" among several others) has been adapted for radio, an ABC made-for-TV movie based on his novel "The Immortals" ("The Immortal," 1969), and a television series based on the same work (1970-71). His critically acclaimed multi-volume series "The Road to Science Fiction" is used in science fiction courses across the country, and his mammoth landmark 1975 work "Alternate Worlds: the Illustrated History of Science Fiction," was honored with the Science Fiction Research Association’s Pilgrim Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1976. A retired professor at the University of Kansas—Lawrence, he has for many years served as the Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction. He has lectured in China, Japan, Poland, Romania, the Soviet Union, and many other countries for the US Information Agency. In 1983 he was awarded science fiction’s prestigious Hugo award for his non-fiction book "Isaac Asimov: The Foundations of Science Fiction." |

Irreversible Crisis $20.36 This is the fifth in the important series of essays by the former editors of Monthly Review analyzing the ongoing crisis of global capitalism. Following the multiple interconnected stock market crashes of October 1987, the economies of the capitalist world entered a new and dangerous phase of the crisis that began in the 1970s with the end of the post-WWII boom. Sweezy and Magdoff argue that far from being a temporary setback, the events of late 1987 are rooted in the nature of the capital accumulation process itself and therefore unlikely to be reversed. Their argument is especially prescient when viewed in light of the financial meltdown of 2008. |

Infinite Crisis $95.59 Infinite Crisis is a sevenissue limited series of comic books written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Phil Jimenez, George Prez, Ivan Reis, and Jerry Ordway. The series was published by DC Comics, beginning in October of 2005. Each issue was released with two variant covers: one by Prez, and one by Jim Lee and Sandra Hope. The series storyline was a sequel to DCs 1985 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths. It revisited characters and concepts from that earlier Crisis, including the existence of DCs Multiverse. Some of the characters featured were alternate versions of comic icons such as an alternate Superman named KalL, who came from a place called EarthTwo. The American Crisis $86.03 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The American Crisis was a series of pamphlets published from 1776 to 1783 during the American Revolution by 18th century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine. The first volume begins with the famous words These are the times that try mens souls. There were sixteen pamphlets in total together often known as The American Crisis or simply The Crisis. Thirteen numbered pamphlets were published between 17761777 with three additional pamphlets released between 17771783. The writings were contemporaneous with the early parts of the American Revolution, during the times that colonists needed inspiring. The Watergate Crisis $6 The Watergate crisis marked the beginning of the age of cynicism in America. This readable and insightful account examines what happened in Watergate, who was involved, what it meant then, and what it means now. By analyzing the overall impact of Watergate on events that followed, this work will help students and other interested readers to better understand today’s politics. In addition to a narrative overview and a series of topical essays about Watergate, this guide provides a timeline of events, biographical sketches of the key players, the text of important primary documents, a glossary of terms, and an annotated bibliography. Watergate refers to a series of crimes and abuses of power including obstruction of justice, conspiracy, criminal coverup, perjury, and destruction of evidence. As a result of the Watergate crisis, the press became more intrusive and personal, the public became more cynical and apathetic toward government, executive-congressional relations became soured and divisive, and partisan clashes became more bitter. Genovese, a noted presidential scholar, discusses Nixon’s political personality, addresses the question of whether any president is above the law, and offers a contemporary view of presidential corruption in historical perspective, which is valuable in light of the Clinton impeachment hearings. This readable analysis and ready-reference guide provides valuable resources for students. |

The Concussion Crisis $9.99 FOR FAR TOO LONG, the menace of concussions has been hidden in plain sight. On playing fields across America, lives are being derailed by seemingly innocuous jolts to the head. From the peewees to the pros, concussions are reaching epidemic proportions. This book brings that hidden epidemic and its consequences out of the shadows. As frightening as the numbers are—estimates of sports-related concussions range from 1.6 million to 3.8 million annually in the United States—they can’t begin to explain the profound impact of a hidden health problem that can strike any of us. It is becoming increasingly clear that concussions, like severe head traumas, can rob us of our memory, our mental abilities, our very sense of self. Because the damage caused by a concussion is rarely visible to the naked eye or even on a brain scan, no one knows how many millions might be living lives devastated by an invisible injury too often shrugged off as “just a bump on the head.” This book puts a human face on a huge public health crisis. Through narratives that chronicle the poignant experiences of real people struggling with this invisible and often unrecognized brain injury, Linda Carroll and David Rosner bring home its potentially devastating consequences. Among those you will meet are a high school football player whose college dreams were derailed by a series of undiagnosed concussions, a hard-driving soccer star whose own struggles with concussions pushed her to crusade for safety reform as a coach and soccer mom, and an economist who lost her career because of lingering concussion symptoms from a fender bender. The Concussion Crisis weaves these human dramas with compelling stories of scientists and doctors who are unraveling the mysteries of how an invisible injury can wreak such havoc. It takes readers into the top labs, where scientists are teasing out what goes wrong in the brain after a jolt to the head, and into the nation’s leading concussion clinic, where patients get cutting-edge management and treatment. Carroll and Rosner analyze the cultural factors that allowed this burgeoning epidemic to fester unseen and untreated. They chronicle the growing public awareness sparked by the premature retirements of superstars like NFL quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Steve Young. And they argue for an immediate change in a macho culture that minimizes the dangers inherent in repeated jolts to the head. The Concussion Crisis sounds an urgent wake-up call to parents, coaches, trainers, doctors, and the athletes themselves. The book will stand as the definitive exploration of this heretofore-silent health crisis. It should be required reading for every parent with a child playing sports—in fact, by everyone who has ever suffered a hard bump on the head. |

The CreditAnstalt Crisis of 1931 $184.81 Austria played a prominent role in the worldwide events of 1931 as the largest bank in Central and Eastern Europe, the Viennese CreditAnstalt, collapsed and led Europe into a financial panic that spread to other parts of the world. The events in Austria were pivotal to the economic developments of the 1930s, yet the literature about them is sparse. This book tries to fill this gap. Aurel Schubert analyzes the crisis using the leading theories of financial crises, identifies the causes of the crisis, examines the markets efficiency in predicting events, analyzes how the crisis was transmitted to the real sector, and studies the behavior of the Austrian as well as international authorities as lenders of last resort. His main conclusion is that even sixty years after the crisis, many of its lessons are still valid. Managerial and regulatory deficiencies led to the collapse of the bank; the subsequent currency crisis was not an irrational and unexplainable panic by a confused public, but rather a rational response to inconsistencies in policy; and the reactions of the largely unprepared authoritiesin Austria as well as abroaddid not help in resolving the crisis quickly. Greece and the InterWar Economic Crisis $301.86 The great depression of the interwar years was the most profound shock ever to strike the world economy, and is widely held to have led directly to the collapse of parliamentary democracy in many countries. This study of Greece in the interwar period, however, demonstrates that there was no simple correlation between economic and political crisis. Drawing on detailed statistical research, Mazower explores how an underdeveloped country like Greece was able to recover so quickly from the economic crisis. He examines the complex processes involved, showing how recovery, like crisis, threatened prevailing notions of the relationship between state and society, and undermined ruling elites. He also shows how the rapid economic recovery of the Greeks after 1932 was succeeded in 1936 by the establishment of the Metaxas dictatorship. The Global Crisis Markers $165 The author argues that we should not be diverted by the East Asian 'meltdown', which is a predictable outcome of global dynamics. Of real concern, however, is the 'hidden crisis', which has been inadvertently engineered by neoliberal economists who dominate the world's financial institutions. They are the global crisis makers, who have convinced governments to abandon strategic leadership and to impose crippling deflationary policies. By employing the innovative theoretical and empirical work published in his recent series of remarkable books, Graeme Snooks shows how this threat to progress and liberty can be overcome. |

Crisis on Infinite Earths $90.81 Crisis on Infinite Earths is a 12issue American comic book limited series (identified as a 12part maxiseries ) and crossover event, produced by DC Comics in 1985 to simplify their then50yearold continuity. 1] The series was written by Marv Wolfman, and illustrated by George Prez (pencils/layouts), with Mike DeCarlo, Dick Giordano, and Jerry Ordway, (who shared inking/embellishing chores). The series removed the concept of the Multiverse in the fictional DC Universe, and depicted the deaths of such long standing superheroes as Supergirl and the Barry Allen incarnation of the Flash. The title of the series was inspired by earlier crossover stories involving the multiple parallel Earths of the Multiverse, such as Crisis on EarthTwo and Crisis on EarthThree, but instead of lasting two to five issues and involving members from as many superhero teams from as many parallel worlds, it involved virtually every significant character from every parallel universe in DCs history. Crisis and Conciliation $79 When Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), was arrested in February 1999, it marked a turning point in relations between Greece and Turkey. As the country's most wanted man, his arrest was greeted with jubilation throughout most of Turkey. However, it also led to a public outcry when it emerged that he had been captured leaving the Greek Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. This was seen as definitive proof that the Greek Government had been aiding and abetting the PKK. In the days and weeks that followed the arrest, relations between the Aegean neighbours sank to their lowest level since the summer of 1974, when Athens and Ankara had come to the brink of war over Cyprus. However, by the end of the year, the picture could not have been more different. An improbable series of events that included a regional conflict, two major disasters and the death of a senior Greek politician had led to a complete transformation in the relations between the two countries. The crowning moment of this change came in December when Greece dropped its long-standing opposition to Turkish candidacy for EU membership. How did this remarkable change come about? Who should take the credit? And what did it mean for diplomatic relations in the Eastern Mediterranean? This is the story of how two countries started down a path to peace after decades of tension and hostility and how, over the course of one monumental year, relations between Greece and Turkey went from the brink of conflict to an unprecedented affirmation of friendship and solidarity. |

Reflections on a Global Financial Crisis $199 In September 2008 we found ourselves faced with a situation which was considered by some as the major crisis of the 21st century; global financial melt down. The possible consequences of this crisis overshadowed concerns about climate change, AIDS and terrorism in the media. In order to contribute to the debate this ebook presents a series of theoretical papers which approach the issue from a range of perspectives, including institutional theory, systems theory, and political and economic theory. These are followed by a group of empirical studies which present a critical analysis of a variety of financial institutions worldwide. We hope that this collection will stimulate further discussion in the academic literature, will be found of relevance to those engaged in determining future financial institutional frameworks and practices, and will inform critical management education in the future. |

The Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy $33.98 Described both as "the Hobbes of our age" and as "the philosophical godfather of Nazism," Carl Schmitt was a brilliant and controversial political theorist whose doctrine of political leadership and critique of liberal democratic ideals distinguish him as one of the most original contributors to modern political theory. "The Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy "offers a powerful criticism of the inconsistencies of representative democracy. First published in 1923, it has often been viewed as an attempt to destroy parliamentarism; in fact, it was Schmitt’s attempt to defend the Weimar constitution. The introduction to this new translation places the book in proper historical context and provides a useful guide to several aspects of Weimar political culture. "The Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy" is included in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought, edited by Thomas McCarthy. |

The Crisis of the Old Order, 1919-1933 $35.21 The Crisis of the Old Order, 1919-1933, volume one of Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.’s Age of Roosevelt series, is the first of three books that interpret the political, economic, social, and intellectual history of the early twentieth century in terms of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the spokesman and symbol of the period. Portraying the United States from the Great War to the Great Depression, The Crisis of the Old Order covers the Jazz Age and the rise and fall of the cult of business. For a season, prosperity seemed permanent, but the illusion came to an end when Wall Street crashed in October 1929. Public trust in the wisdom of business leadership crashed too. With a dramatist’s eye for vivid detail and a scholar’s respect for accuracy, Schlesinger brings to life the era that gave rise to FDR and his New Deal and changed the public face of the United States forever. |

The Crisis of Capitalist Democracy $16.46 Following up on his timely and well-received book, "A Failure of Capitalism," Richard Posner steps back to take a longer view of the continuing crisis of democratic capitalism as the American and world economies crawl gradually back from the depths to which they had fallen in the autumn of 2008 and the winter of 2009. By means of a lucid narrative of the crisis and a series of analytical chapters pinpointing critical issues of economic collapse and gradual recovery, Posner helps non-technical readers understand business-cycle and financial economics, and financial and governmental institutions, practices, and transactions, while maintaining a neutrality impossible for persons professionally committed to one theory or another. He calls for fresh thinking about the business cycle that would build on the original ideas of Keynes. Central to these ideas is that of uncertainty as opposed to risk. Risk can be quantified and measured. Uncertainty cannot, and in this lies the inherent instability of a capitalist economy. As we emerge from the financial earthquake, a deficit aftershock rumbles. It is in reference to that potential aftershock, as well as to the government’s stumbling efforts at financial regulatory reform, that Posner raises the question of the adequacy of our democratic institutions to the economic challenges heightened by the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. The crisis and the government’s energetic response to it have enormously increased the national debt at the same time that structural defects in the American political system may make it impossible to pay down the debt by any means other than inflation or devaluation. |

Rhetorical Approaches to Crisis Communication $157.72 In this project a product to aid educational leaders in the process of communicating in crisis situations is presented. The product was created and received a formative evaluation using an educational research and development methodology. Ultimately, an administrative training course that utilized an Image Repair Situational Theory was developed. After its development, the product was given to a focus group of superintendents and information was solicited from them concerning the usefulness and applicability of the theory in educational crisis situations. These superintendents were taken through a series of case studies in order to gain practice using the theory prior to receiving their input. The results of the focus group surveys indicated that the training program was both useful and applicable for school leaders in educational settings. Improvements were made to the training materials based on the superintendents feedback from the formative evaluation. In the end, suggestions for the broader application of the materials and for future research were discussed. The Press in Times of Crisis $197.81 Throughout American history, the press has been incredibly adept at making the public aware. The history of the press in crisis situations is in many ways the story of public attitudes and the story of America. This book looks at the press over time and the way it has functioned in times of crisis. It considers press coverage of 13 events, spanning a time frame that includes the birth of the nation, its political, economic, and social struggles as a young country, and its civil war. It tells how a young agrarian society grew into an industrial giant, and how it changed from isolationist to a world power. It relates how this country coped with the growth of socialism, two world wars, civil unrest, and with the problem of world overpopulation. The American press has performed various functions throughout the years. The Colonial Press served as a vehicle of discussion, debate, and finally agitation and, in the process, may have defined itself and laid a groundwork for the presss future roles. The press has agitated, advocated, and persuaded. It has been duped, it has been unfair, and it has misled. This volume considers such concepts as advocacy journalism, a central theme of the chapters on abolitionists and David Duke, and social responsibility, a primary part of the chapter on JapaneseAmerican internment. The presss attempt to lead public opinion is the focus of the chapters on the partisan press, the antebellum period, and the first Red Scare in 1919. The chapter on Joseph McCarthy looks at the concepts of objectivity and the use and misuse of pseudo news. The final chapter, on overpopulation, deals extensively with agenda setting. Crisis and Opportunity in the Professions $187.75 In both the forprofit and the notforprofit sectors, there is increasing focus on bottomline results. As organizational goals become ever more quantified, the role of the professional has changed. In almost every profession, a growing conflict of interest now exists between the push of the organizations highly specific and measurable goals on the one hand, and the pull of professional standards and values on the other hand. The purpose of this book is to identify, describe, and understand these conflicts of interests in a wide variety of professional fields. This volume includes articles on medicine, law, accounting, social work, clergy, insurance, computer professionals, and advertising experts, among others, written by experts in the fields. In addition, this volume includes a number of broader pieces related to the topic of professionalism. This volume documents evidence to support the contention that there is a growing crisis in the professions, one that is not limited to one or two professions. The good news is that there is ample evidence that, in every profession, there are opportunities for growth, as well. The professions are facing a defining moment. This volume explores how they might respond. Author: Pava, Moses L./ Primeaux, Patrick D. The Politics of Ethnicity and the Crisis of the Peloponnesian League $35.48 The crisis of Spartan power in the first half of the fourth century has been connected to Spartan inability to manage the hegemony built on the ruins of the Athenian Empire, or interpreted as a result of the unexpected annihilation of the Spartan army by the Boeotians at Leuktra. The present book offers a new perspective, suggesting that the crisis that finally brought down Sparta was in important ways a result of centrifugal impulses within the Peloponnesian League, accompanied by a general awakening of ethnicity in various areas of the Peloponnese. A series of regional case studies is combined with thematic contributions focusing on topics such as the relationship of religious cults and ethnicity and of democracy and ethnicity, the use of archaeological evidence for ethnic phenomena, and comparative approaches based on social anthropology. |

An Analysis on Us SubPrime Mortgage Crisis $109.93 This book provides an analysis on the expansion and the burst phases of the 2007 subprime mortgage bubble, in two interrelated sections. The first part analyzes the speculative investor behavior of the crisis and exhibits that before the crisis the asset prices such as CMBS and SP 500 indexes showed statistical features which are not common among financial time series. The results indicate that during bubble periods several of the stylized facts such as volatility clustering and autocorrelation of absolute returns unexpectedly disappeared indicating the investors irrational exuberance during 2007 subprime mortgage crisis. I have suggested that other bubble periods can be detected by similar stylized fact tests. In the second part, I showed that common macroeconomic risk factors can explain, to a very large extent, all types of mortgages credit risk and I concluded that individual mortgages are possessing significant default correlation, especially subprime mortgage classes. Finally this book ends with demonstrating the significance of correlated defaults on default distributions fat tails which explains the defaults of high tranche MBS products. Author: Yaz C. O. Lu, G. Roman Emperor (Crisis of the Third Century) $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Crisis of the Third Century (also known as the Anarchy of the 3rd Century) marked the end of the Principate, the early phase of Imperial Roman government. A series of soldiers, the Barracks Emperors, assumed the highest office, leading to the breakdown of the previous system of Imperial government, in which the Emperor had functioned within the fiction of a preservation of the old republican forms of government. The crisis came to a close with Diocletian, who reformed the Imperial office and initiated the period known as the Dominate. The accession to the purple of Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus Thrax ( the Thracian ) marks the rise of the first Barracks Emperor par excellence. Whereas the previous military Emperors (Vespasian, Septimius Severus) had come from noble or middleclass plebeian families, Maximinus was born a commoner of a lowclass family in a disreputable part of the Empire, and had begun his career as an enlisted soldier (miles). Iran and the Cold War: The Azerbaijan Crisis of 1946 $54.86 The Azerbaijan crisis of 1946 represented a landmark in the early stages of the Cold War and played a major role in shaping the future course of Irans political development. In this book, originally published in 1992, Louise Fawcett presents a comprehensive study of the fiveyear struggle for control of Iran which culminated in the crisis of 1946. Dr Fawcett examines both the Iranian domestic scene and the role played by the three great powers. She explores the causes, course and consequences of the Azerbaijan crisis from an Iranian perspective. Dr Fawcett then argues that the Iranian crisis was a far more complex affair than was once realised. It brought into play the competitive and often conflicting relationship between not only the United States and the former Soviet Union, but also between Britain and these two superpowers. This study is firmly located within the extensive international relations literature of the Cold War. Iran and the Cold War is an ideal text for students and specialists of both international relations and Middle East studies. Author: Fawcett, Louise L. Estrange/ Louise L. The Truth in Crisis, Volume 5 $14.95 “The shift in the Southern Baptist Convention toward a more conservative orientation was one of the most important developments in 20th century Christianity. The SBC is the largest non-Catholic denomination in the United States. The influence of its 16 million members extends literally around the world. In recent years, Southern Baptists have held many of the key political leadership positions in Washington, and the SBC’s influence in Washington is enormous. The shift began in 1979 and continues today, though most historians say the actual “Battle for the Bible” concluded in 1993. In 1978, the SBC was shifting dramatically toward the theological positions held by more mainline Protestant groups. Today, the SBC leads the Evangelical world in theology, publishing, missions, and in many other ways, but has turned away from the mainline denominations. Author James C. Hefley was there as an eyewitness to history in the making. A gifted writer with a clear focus on the theological issues involved, Hefley wrote this six-volume series as developments occurred. He literally provides a step-by-step account of what happened.” |

Corporate Governance After the Financial Crisis $71.99 The first decade of the new millennium was bookended by two major economic crises. The bursting of the dotcom bubble and the extended bear market of 2000 to 2002 prompted Congress to pass the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which was directed at core aspects of corporate governance. At the end of the decade came the bursting of the housing bubble, followed by a severe credit crunch, and the worst economic downturn in decades. In response, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act, which changed vast swathes of financial regulation. Among these changes were a number of significant corporate governance reforms. Corporate Governance after the Financial Crisis asks two questions about these changes. First, are they a good idea that will improve corporate governance? Second, what do they tell us about the relative merits of the federal government and the states as sources of corporate governance regulation? Traditionally, corporate law was the province of the states. Today, however, the federal government is increasingly engaged in corporate governance regulation. The changes examined in this work provide a series of case studies in which to explore the question of whether federalization will lead to better outcomes. The author analyzes these changes in the context of corporate governance, executive compensation, corporate fraud and disclosure, shareholder activism, corporate democracy, and declining US capital market competitiveness. |

It is critically important that they have as much information as possible in order that they may give the informed loyalty and support our institutions and agencies need to truly fulfill their program assignments. The Human Resources for Health Crisis in Zambia $9.99 The Human Resources for Health Crisis in Zambia' is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank?s ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion.Despite reporting some health gains since the 1990s, health outcomes remain poor in Zambia and it will be very challenging to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals by 2015.The Government of Zambia recognizes that the improvement of child and maternal health and the reduction in mortality from HIV/AIDs and malaria require better access to an appropriate number of wellperforming health workers or human resources for health (HRH). This paper compiles recent evidence on the Zambian health labor market and provides some baseline information on HRH to support the government address its HRH challenges. In addition, the paper analyzes the available evidence on the national health labor market to better understand the number, distribution, and performance of HRH in Zambia. The paper also explains HRH outcomes by mapping, assessing, and analyzing pre-service education and labor market dynamics and well as the core factors influencing these dynamics. This working paper was produced as part of theWorld Bank?s Africa Region Health Systems for Outcomes (HSO) Program. The Program, funded by the World Bank, the Government of Norway, theGovernment of the United Kingdom, and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), focuses on strengthening health systems inAfrica to reach the poor and achieve tangible results related to Health, Nutrition, and Population. The main pillars and focus of the program center on knowledge and capacity building related to Human Resources for Health, Health Financing, Pharmaceuticals, Governance and Service Delivery, and Infrastructure and ICT. Global Monitoring Report 2010: The MDGs After The Crisis $11.89 What is the human cost of the global economic crisis? This year’s Global Monitoring Report, The MDGs after the Crisis, examines the impact of the worst recession since the Great Depression on poverty and human development outcomes in developing countries. Although the recovery is under way, the impact of the crisis will be lasting and immeasurable. The impressive precrisis progress in povertyreduction will slow, particularly in low-income countries in Africa. No household in developing countries is immune. Gaps will persist to 2020. In 2015, 20 million more people in Sub-Saharan Africa will be in extreme poverty and 53 million more people globally. Even households above the 1.25-a-daypoverty line in higher-income developing countries are coping by buying cheaper food, delaying other purchases, reducing visits to doctors, working longer hours, or taking multiple jobs. The crisis will also have serious costs on human development indicators: 1.2 million more children under age five and 265,000 more infants will die between 2009 and 2015. 350,000 more students will not complete primary education in 2015. 100 million fewer people will have access to safe drinking water in 2015 because of the crisis.History tells us that if we let the recovery slide and allow the crisis to lead to widespread domestic policy failures and institutional breakdowns in poor countries, the negative impact on human development outcomes, especially on children and women, will be disastrous. The international financial institutions and international community responded strongly and quickly to the crisis, butmore is needed to sustain the recovery and regain the momentum in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Developing countries will also need to implement significant policy reforms and strengthen institutions to improve the efficiency of service delivery in the face of fiscal constraints. Unlike previous crises, however, this one was not caused by domestic policy failure in developing countries. So better development outcomes will also hinge on a rapid global economic recovery that improves export conditions, terms-oftrade, and affordable capital flows as well as meeting aid commitments to low-income countries.Global Monitoring Report 2010, seventh in this annual series, is prepared jointly by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. It provides a development perspective on the global economic crisis and assesses the impact on developing countries their growth, poverty reduction, and other MDGs. Finally, it sets out priorities for policy responses, both by developing countries and by the international community. |

1633 $7.99 Science fiction phenomenon and New York Times bestselling author David Weber (Honor Harrington series) and rising star Eric Flint present the stunning sequel to 1632–an explosive alternate history tale chronicling the epic struggle of American freedom and justice against the tyrannies of the seventeenth century. From The Publisher:The new government in central Europe, called the Confederated Principalities of Europe, was formed by an alliance between Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, and the West Virginians led by Mike Stearns who were transplanted into 17th-century Germany by a mysterious cosmic accident. The new regime is shaky. Outside its borders, the Thirty Years War continues to rage. Within, it is beset by financial crisis as well as the political and social tensions between the democratic ideals of the 20th-century Americans and the aristocracy which continues to rule the roost in the CPE as everywhere in Europe.Worst of all, the CPE has aroused the implacable hostility of Cardinal Richelieu, the effective ruler of France. Richelieu has created the League of Ostend in order to strike at the weakest link in the CPE’s armor-its dependence on the Baltic as the lifeline between Gustav Adolf’s Sweden and the rest of his realm. The greatest naval war in European history is about to erupt. Like it or not, Gustavus Adolphus will have to rely on Mike Stearns and the technical wizardry of his obstreperous Americans to save the King of Sweden from ruin.Caught in the conflagration are two American diplomatic missions abroad: Rebecca Stearns’ mission to France and Holland, and the embassy which Mike Stearns sent to King Charles of England headed by his sister Rita and Melissa Mailey. Rebecca finds herself trapped in war-torn Amsterdam; Rita and Melissa, imprisoned in the Tower of London. And much as Mike wants to transport 20th-century values into war-torn 17th-century Europe by Sweet Reason, still he finds comfort in the fact that |

1635: The Tangled Web By Virginia DeMarce $7.99 Though the Thirty Years War continues to ravage 17th century Europe, history as it once happened has been strongly deflected by the new force which is rapidly gathering power and influence: the United States of Europe, an alliance between Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, and the West Virginians from the 20th century led by Mike Stearns who were hurled centuries into the past by a mysterious cosmic accident—the Ring of Fire. .
The USE has the know-how of 20th century technology, but the American traditions of freedom and justice is having an even stronger impact on Europe, and the rulers of Europe are powerless to stuff the Grantville genie back into the bottle.
Virginia DeMarce, a trained historian and co-author of the New York Times best seller, 1635: The Bavarian Crisis, continues the saga of the time-lost Americans as seen through the eyes of both Americans and Europeans, as the Americans try to make sense of the strange world into which they have been hurled, and the Europeans try to understand the abilities and behavior of the visitors from the future. The result is a volume that will be irresistible to the thousands of fans of the Ring of Fire series.

Praise for 1634: The Bavarian Crisis by Eric Flint and Virginia DeMarce:
“. . . fascinating reading. . . . It is especially refreshing to read an alternate history that doesn’t depend upon the clash of anachronistic arms, but rather on how modern ideas of human rights, education, sanitation and law might have affected the Europe of the 30 Years War.” —Publishers Weekly
|

1967 $9.18 From Israel’s leading historian, a sweeping history of 1967–the war, what led up to it, what came after, and how it changed everything Tom Segev’s acclaimed works One Palestine, Complete and The Seventh Million overturned accepted views of the history of Israel. Now, in 1967 –a number-one bestseller in Hebrew–he brings his masterful skills to the watershed year when six days of war reshaped the country and the entire region.Going far beyond a military account, Segev re-creates the crisis in Israel before 1967, showing how economic recession, a full grasp of the Holocaust’s horrors, and the dire threats made by neighbor states combined to produce a climate of apocalypse. He depicts the country’s bravado after its victory, the mood revealed in a popular joke in which one soldier says to his friend, Let’s take over Cairo ; the friend replies, Then what shall we do in the afternoon? Drawing on unpublished letters and diaries, as well as government memos and military records, Segev reconstructs an era of new possibilities and tragic missteps. He introduces the legendary figures–Moshe Dayan, Golda Meir, Gamal Abdul Nasser, and Lyndon Johnson–and an epic cast of soldiers, lobbyists, refugees, and settlers. He reveals as never before Israel’s intimacy with the White House as well as the political rivalries that sabotaged any chance of peace. Above all, he challenges the view that the war was inevitable, showing that a series of disastrous miscalculations lie behind the bloodshed.A vibrant and original history, 1967 is sure to stand as the definitive account of that pivotal year. |

2231: Mars Against Empire $27.99 An omnibus including the first four books in the Defense Command series, 2231: Mars Against Empire covers the outset of the Martian War. Earth”s former colonists on Mars have built their ”Imperium”, and now choose to launch a war against the Earth Empire for dominance of the solar system. In the process, they run head-first into the women and men of Defense Command. But even as the first shots are fired, political instability is taking root in the Empire, with the Emperor and the Parliament struggling for dominance. The Egesta crisis is also beginning, and that debacle will draw Defense Command into the worst peacekeeping disaster in Imperial history. It is thus a very complicated year, and narrating these stories, then-Commodore Ken Barron pulls no punches. With is wry (often lame) sense of humor, he candidly recounts the adventure, the romance, and the pain, producing what many feel is the definitive account of the period. |
