City Wwii
Why did price ceilings on city flats lead to their dilapidation in post-WWII Europe?

The owners were prohibited from charging market value. They had no profits to re-invest back into the properties. They just tried to make everything (plumbing, electric) last another month or another year. Not a good strategy for maintaining an asset.

Pogue's War: Diaries of a WWII Combat Historian

Pogue’s War: Diaries of a WWII Combat Historian

$23.94

" With a foreword by Stephen Ambrose Preface by Franklin D. Anderson Forrest Pogue (1912-1996) was undoubtedly one of the greatest World War II combat historians. Born and educated in Kentucky, he is perhaps best known for his definitive four-volume biography of General George C. Marshall. But, as Pogue’s War makes clear, he was also a pioneer in the development of oral history in the twentieth century, as well as an impressive interviewer with an ability to relate to people at all levels, from the private in the trenches to the general carrying four stars. Pogue’s War is drawn from Forrest Pogue’s handwritten pocket notebooks, carried with him throughout the war, long regarded as unreadable because of his often atrocious handwriting. Pogue himself began expanding the diaries a few short years after the war, with the intent of eventual publication. At last this work is being published. Supplemented with carefully deciphered and transcribed selections from his diaries, the heart of the book is straight from the field. Much of the material has never before seen print. From D-Day to VE-Day, Pogue experienced and documented combat on the front lines, describing action on Omaha Beach, in the Huertgen Forest, and on other infamous fields of conflict. He not only graphically — yet also often poetically– — recounts the extreme circumstances of battle, but he also notes his fellow soldiers’ innermost thoughts, feelings, opinions, and attitudes about the cruelty of war. As a trained historian, Pogue describes how he went about his work and how the Army’s history program functioned in the European Theater of Operations. His entries from his time at the history headquarters in Paris show the city in the early days after the liberation in a unique light. Pogue’s War has an immediacy that much official history lacks, and is a remarkable addition to any World War II bookshelf.

This story gives you a peak into one moment in the history of these courageous women. The author recounts his personal experience with one WASP pilot in particular, and shows how a joke can sometimes be dangerous to one’s health _____________About the author: Ben R. Andrew Pulver’s study of "Night and the City" argues that it is one of the most important noir films ever made. Drawing from biographies, journals and interviews, Pulver traces the film’s development and production history and its reception by British and American critics, considering the film both as an example of British film noir—which was heavily influenced by the constricting social mores of the interwar years and the shattering effects of WWII—and also as a hybrid of contrasting American and European noir traditions. Finally, Pulver explores the film’s representations of the dark underworld of London’s Soho, at once the city’s entertainment area, but also containing a subterranean life of criminality, prostitution and menace, and reflects upon its contribution to a long history of mythologising of this ever-shifting urban landscape.

A Fallen Eagle: WWII B-24 Pilot in the 15th Air Force with the 450th Bg "Cottontails"

$16.69

"A Fallen Eagle" is the true story of a young boy from East Texas, who volunteered for service in 1942. He entered the service with only a high school education and limited experience, other than working on a farm. His desire to be a pilot drove him to overcome numerous obstacles to be accepted into pilot training. He persevered through rigorous training to earn his wings. After receiving his wings, he became a B-24 pilot assigned to the 722nd Squadron of the 450th Bomb Group. When his unit training was completed, he was assigned to the 15th Air Force, operating out of Italy. He flew missions over most of Europe and the Balkans. Through over 75 of his personal letters, he shares his experiences, both emotional and physical, as he went from being a farm boy to being a heavy bomber pilot. He flew in dangerous combat situations, saw the horrors of aerial battle, and ultimately, gave his life in the service of his country. The human side of the tragedy is told not only in his letters, but by letters of the crew’s next of kin and government correspondence in the aftermath. The final chapter describes the detailed government process to recover, make positive identification, and return his remains to the states. CLARENCE P. COWART was born in Groves, Texas, grew up in Jasper, Texas and graduated from Texas A & M College. Upon his graduation, he entered the service at Ft. Bliss, Texas and graduated from Missile School. After serving his active duty obligation, he returned to East Texas and joined the Army Reserves. His first assignment was as a Platoon Leader in an infantry unit. His next assignment was in an Artillery Unit in Beaumont, Texas where he served in several positions. He served four years as Headquarters Company Commander in a support group. Through the years he served in several units, the last was as the Commander of a transportation battalion. After twenty-one years of service he retired as a Lt. Colonel. While serving in the reserves, his civilian jobs involved working in numerous positions in municipal government in Southeast Texas. He retired from the City of Beaumont. He and his wife, Dixie raised two children. They now have four grandchildren and one great granddaughter. They are retired and currently live in Lumberton, Texas. Colonel Cowart is active in the church where he attends, is an avid hunter, competitive shooter, and military arms collector. He operates a part-time design and inspection service from his home. His interest in WWII history led him to write "A Fallen Eagle."

FDR Truman Eisenhower LeMay Tibbets Churchill de Gaulle Stalin and others are examined in detail. The results were astonishing. Had the victors been held to the same judgment as the Germans they would have been found just as guilty if not more so as the men they judged at the end of the war. A review of the original Nuremberg Trials is included and clearly this allied court was found to be one of the worst examples of Western democratic legal process in modern history.

While…: Born During WWII

You were born in a hospital?" Hilde says as she lays down her black bread and cheese sandwich. She sits opposite me at my kitchen table. Looking up from my salad, I nod. "Yes, I thought everyone by the 1940′s was born in a hospital." "Hell no." Hilde stares at me. "In Germany I was born at home, on the couch, delivered by a midwife." Thus began the noontime conversations of an American housewife and a German cleaning lady about their contrasting lives during and after WWII. My mother taught me that an important word in any language is while. While one thing is happening, so is another. "While I wash dishes, Peggy, youdry. While we are in nighttime, someone is in daylight. While one person dies, another is born." While WWII began, two little girls were born and grew up in opposing countries and living in its aftermath. With this word while, we started this book of extreme contrasts, startling discoveries and sometimes striking similarities.

WWII: Lost Color Archives

WWII: Lost Color Archives

$13.73

Rated: NRSynopsis: World War II comes startlingly alive in the three-part History Channel documentary, WWII The Lost Color Archives (originally aired as WWI In Color). Consisting exclusively of rare color film shot during World War II, some of which was discovered in the ’80s by British film researcher Adrian Wood, the documentary covers the entire conflict, from prewar Nazi rallies to VJ Day. Footage by combat cameramen, by amateur filmmakers, and even home movies of Hitler’s mistress, Eva Braun, combine in a vivid collage, with the color film giving a haunting immediacy to an era that, for most of us, exists in only black and white. The documentary also uses letters and diaries of participants on both sides — young and old, soldiers and civilians — to present a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the war. Effectively performed by actors in voice-over, these readings are occasionally chilling, and often heartrending, a poignant complement to these unforgettable images. WWII Crimes on British Homefront

WWII Crimes on British Homefront

$29.98

In this 7-part documentary, award-winning director Peter Williams (Secret Army ) unearths the stories of people in wartime Britain who got away with everything from murder to looting, theft, profiteering and espionage. The German Luftwaffe blasted the buildings of Britain’s cities into rubble, creating an ideal hiding place for homicide victims among the many genuine victims of the blitz. Rationing was established to manage the nation’s consumption of food, goods and fuel, but scarcity drove many law-abiding citizens to the black market. Seen through archival footage and interviews with people who were there, WWII Crimes on the British Home Front is an important, riveting record of wartime crime and human ingenuity. Includes: Getting Away with Murder / Innocence and Guilt / How young Jim set out to kill Hitler… / Cops and Robbers / Rubble, Trouble and Death / Country Bobby / Mayhem and Memories (2 DVD) approx. 168 mins.

TwentySevenEighty Blues: A Memoir of WWII

TwentySevenEighty Blues: A Memoir of WWII

$23.1

The B17 was called a Flying Fortress because of its fire power, not because of its ability to protect its crew. There was very little armor to do that. In most places the only thing between the crew and Mother Earth…sometimes more than four miles below…was a thin sheet of Alclad aluminum. As the aircraft strugged through acres of punishing flak, or was attacked by enemy fighters, there was no place to hide. TwentySevenEighty Blues is the personal memoir of a WWII ROBG (a Radio Operator Mechanic Gunner) who called this widely celebrated aircraft his Guardian Angel. .,. you had to practically blow her out of the sky to knock her down. he says. Oh, the stories I could tell you about this once mighty aircraft. Author: Thornton, Robert L., III Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 244 Publication Date: 2006/04/01 Language: English Dimensions: 8.50 x 5.50 x 0.51 inches

WWII: A Legacy of Letters

WWII: A Legacy of Letters

$33.67

"The tome puts a face on many of the events surrounding the Pacific Theater of World War II as George battled through New Guinea and into the Admiralty Islands." By John Leptich, The Associated Press Sep 10, 2006 Examiner.com "I spent twelve to sixteen hours a day on the bridge of the USS Swanson and participated in the events as they occurred. I highly recommend A Legacy of Letters as an accurate account of the events. It also answered a lot of questions for me concerning the Admiralty Island invasion." Jack D. Sloan Retired Lieutenant, US Navy. "Writer Clinton Frederick’s A Legacy of Letters: One Soldier’s Journey not only presents a dramatic account of how he came to know his father through his letters, but also gives us a detailed history of America’s heroic battle in the South Pacific." Jim Byrnes Writer, Director, Producer Annotation: WHAT IS THE BOOK ABOUT? Clinton Frederick returned to his grandparents’ house for a family wedding in 2002. In the attic, just as he’d remembered, were Japanese swords, parachutes, and other memorabilia from WWII. In a trunk stuck back under the rafters, Clinton made a discovery that would change his life forever. Inside were more than hundred letters written by his father, Captain George Frederick. This correspondence, most of which Capt. Frederick had written to his mother, chronicled from a most personal standpoint some of the major events that shaped the world. The letters also allowed Clinton Frederick, for the first time in his life, to know what his father was really like. WWII – A Legacy of Letters, is a true story of love and war. In it, Frederick artfully weaves together his father’s letters with historical information about some of themost important military campaigns of the war.

How to Lose WWII

An engrossing and fact-filled collection of the great screwups of the Great War Never had there been a war on the scale of World War II—a global conflict so widespread and involving so many different military organizations from such a diverse pool of combatant countries that the consequences of every decision, both the brilliant and the bad, were multiplied one hundredfold. Bill Fawcett, popular chronicler of monumental military mistakes and truly boneheaded battlefield blunders now looks closely at the historic errors that ultimately determined the course of post-WWII history. A cornucopia of catastrophic missteps, including: An unprepared Poland is caught napping as the Nazis storm in virtually unopposed Germany misses a golden opportunity to take Britain out of the war at Dunkirk Russia plays Goliath to Finland’s David Four valuable months are wasted as Allied forces sit trapped on the beaches of Anzio Germany squanders its costly development of jet power The secret 1942 battle Marshal Zhukov lost, along with half a million soldiers Battles lost that should have been won, including Moscow, Stalingrad, and D-Day

The Mighty Eighth in WWII: A Memoir

The Mighty Eighth in WWII: A Memoir

$18.91

On an early morning in the fall of 1942, Kemp McLaughlin’s group set out for a raid on a French target. Immediately after dropping its bombs, McLaughlin’s plane was hit. A huge fire burned a four-foot hole in his wing, his waist gunner bailed out, his radio operator was wounded, the plane lost all oxygen, and his pilot put on a parachute and sat on the escape hatch, waiting for the plane to explode. And this was only McLaughlin’s first sortie. McLaughlin went on to pilot the mission command plane on the second raid against Schweinfurt, the largest air raid in history, which resulted in the destruction of 70 percent of German ball bearing production capability. McLaughlin also participated in the bombing of heavy water installations in Norway. The Mighty Eighth in WWII also includes the stories of downed pilots in France and Holland who traveled under the cover of night through the countryside, evading the Nazis who had seen their planes go down. As a group leader, McLaughlin was responsible for the planning and execution of air raids, forced to follow the directives of senior (and sometimes less informed) officers. His position as one of the managers of the massive sky trains allows him to provide unique insight into the work of maintenance and armament crews, preflight briefings, and off-duty activities of the airmen. No other memoir of World War II reveals so much about both the actual bombing runs against Nazi Germany and the management of personnel and material that made those airborne armadas possible.

$25.24

Picture a little girl in a field of tall grass and wild flowers, her little dog by her side, her body warmed by the mellow sun, the buzzing of friendly insects and the dancing of butterflies. She’s in the garden of her grandparents’ villa on the outskirts of Budapest, Hungary, the only home she’s ever know, among loving people, her mother, her best friend, her nanny, her uncle. The first of September 1939 she enters first grade almost at the same instant the German Nazi Army invades the not too distant Poland. Unbeknownst to her life is changed for ever. World War II has begun. At first slowly, almost imperceptably, life begins to change; then come bombings, German occupation and another threat, that of the Soviet Army approaching the eastern border. In the Fall of 1944 her mother and step-father and the little girl leave the capitol for another city only to encounter more severe bombings, a reign of terror and human suffering while life in a surreal way still goes on and children manage to find fun in spite of it all. The three flee the country to Austria. At last the war is over. Yet years of uncertainly await them. Not until March of 1950 when they arrive in the United States do they find what is considered a normal life. But it isn’t all gloom and doom. Amusing situations, pleasurable times happen even in the harshest times. Time marches on and the little girl is growing up. Romance makes an appearance. British citizen Alexander Foote was recruited into a Soviet network of spies against Nazi Germany. Based in Switzerland, Foote was responsible for maintaining the network and forwarding information to the Centre in Russia. Foote describes how the network operated, including codes and secret transmissions, hiding from Swiss and German authorities, recruiting and funding, and eluding double agents. All the while, Foote watched Soviet Russia, presumably an ally to the free nations, become more and more like the Fascists Foote opposed. Eventually captured by Swiss police, Foote was debriefed in Russia, but managed to escape home to Britain after persuading the Soviets to send him on another mission. This is a fascinating story that illuminates a key part of the secret espionage networks undertaken during World War II.

During WW II, the closest most Americans ever came to combat was throughthe cartoons of Bill Mauldin, the most beloved enlisted man in the U.S. Army. This new paperback edition of the 2008 two-volume, deluxe hardcover setbrings together Mauldin s complete works from 1940 through the end of thewar under one cover. This collection of over 600 cartoons, most never beforereprinted, is more than the record of a great artist: it is an essential chronicle ofAmerica s citizen-soldiers from peace through war to victory.Bill Mauldin knew war because he was in it. He had created his characters, Willie and Joe, at age 18, before Pearl Harbor, while training with the 45th Infantry Division and cartooning part-timefor the camp newspaper. His brilliant send-ups of officers were pure infantry, and the men loved it. Mauldin s cartoonsand captions recreated on paper the fully realized world of the American combat soldier.Willie & Joe is edited by Todd DePastino, Mauldin s official biographer. Willie & Joe contains an introduction and runningcommentary by DePastino, providing context for the drawings, pertinent biographical details of Mauldin s life, andoccasional background on specific cartoons (such as the ones that made Patton howl).

WWII Diary of a German Soldier

WWII Diary of a German Soldier

$27.05

I was born and raised in Germany. After my father’s death, my mother spent many winters with my husband and I here in Florida. During these visits, she and I transcribed my father’s World War II diaries into German from the old "Gabelsberger" shorthand, which only Mama was able to read. Subsequently, I translated them into English. These diaries fortunately were discovered by my sister Sigrid in the attic upon the sale of the old family home after my father’s passing in 1989. She felt Mama and I should translate these books for the family. At a later point many friends and acquaintances encouraged me, to publish this diary, to document his thoughts, experiences, and innermost feelings from the beginning of his conscripted military service in 1939 through 1946, when he returned home after being released from a French POW labor camp. During the latter part of 1946 and into 1947, an epilog describes his daily struggles to return to normalcy, the resumption of his teaching career, and the search for food to feed his family. He describes his touching love for his family, as well as his anger and hatred for the insane war and its inept leaders. A war, he was forced to participate in as an ordinary German soldier. Many times he naively commented very unfavorably, sometimes using "choice words" about Hitler, the Nazi Party, and his superiors, a risk, if found out, could have cost him his life. I myself have many memories of the war and its horrors as a little girl without a father, spending night after night in a bunker, the "liberation" of our small town by the Americans. This has left deep and lasting impressions on me. Later on, I met a wonderful American with whom I fell in love andmarried, with my father proudly walking me down the aisle. This, in spite of the resentment he held against Americans, for shamefully turning him over to the French as a forced labor POW. I remember his sadness, when his little "Murschel," as he used to call me, left for America wit

 A Hard Man To Beat

A Hard Man To Beat

Bill White (19052001) was an itinerant ranch hand and trapper, a member of the RCMP and an Arctic traveller, but he was best known for his work as the head of the Vancouver Labour Council and president of the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Union, the largest local union in Canada in his time. It was a position he held for eleven straight years during WWII, the heyday of the West Coast shipbuilding industry. A Hard Man to Beat not only covers all the major labour events of the period, but brings to life the personality of the man, Bill White, in his own colourful language. Author Howard White spent years of intensive research and worked closely with Bill to create this oral history, which sold out its first printing in two days when it was first published in 1983. A Hard Man to Beat is one of ten Vancouver 125 Legacy books, an initiative created by the City of Vancouver to bring back into print a collection of books to celebrate Vancouvers 125th anniversary.

In less than a year, Lawrence Ferlinghetti won a lifetime achievement award from the Author’s Guild, received the Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and celebrated the 50th anniversary of his renowned City Lights Bookstore. Now, instead of resting on these many laurels, the elder statesman of American poetry lights out for the territories with Book I of his own born-in-the-U.S.A. narrative, Americus. Describing his work as part documentary, part public pillow-talk, part personal epic….a descant, a canto unsung, a banal history, a true fiction, lyric and political…, Ferlinghetti merges certain universal texts, snatches of song, words or phrases, murmuring of love or hate, from Lotte Lenya to the latest soul singer, sayings and shibboleths from Yogi Berra to the National Anthem and the Gettysburg Address or the Ginsberg Address, that haunt our nocturnal imagination…. This sit-up-and-take-notice work breaks new ground in the grand tradition of Whitman, Williams, Olson and Pound, as Ferlinghetti stalks our literary and political landscapes, past and present, to articulate the unique voice of America and create an autobiography of our collective American consciousness. Born to Italian parents in Yonkers, New York in 1919, Lawrence Ferlinghetti served in the navy during WWII and received degrees from the U. of North Carolina, Columbia and the Sorbonne in Paris. Since 1953 he has been the owner and publisher of City Lights Books in San Francisco.

Baseball’s Pivotal Era, 1945-1951

$7.34

Thanks in large part to the home run race, 1998 witnessed a dramatic resurgence of interest in America’s national pastime. But the roots of the modern era can be traced back to the post-WWII years, during Happy Chandler’s reign as baseball commissioner.Players and fans returning from overseas hungered to resume their careers and their love affair with baseball. It was a time when fans could still identify with players, whose salaries almost resembled their own, when kids played baseball on sandlots, in pastures, and on city streets all summer long, when fans followed their team on the radio, and when practically anyone could afford to see a game in person. But change was on the horizon. Robert Murphy’s attempt to organize the Pirates and the Mexican League’s success in luring players south led to a series of lawsuits that almost undermined baseball’s reserve clause and its antitrust exemption. Out of this came spring training pay, uniform contracts, minimum salary levels, player representation, a pension plan — and the seeds of discontent that were reaped in the early 1990s.It was an era dominated by the outstanding play of Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, Don Newcombe, Warren Spahn, and many others. But perhaps no performance was more important than that of Jackie Robinson, whose entrance into the game broke the color barrier, won him the respect of millions of Americans, and helped set the stage for the civil rights movement.

 Encyclopedia of Film Noir

Encyclopedia of Film Noir

$89.71

When viewers think of film noir, they often picture actors like Humphrey Bogart playing characters like Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, the film based on the book by Dashiell Hammett. Yet film noir is a genre much richer. The authors first examine the debate surrounding the parameters of the genre and the many different ways it is defined. They discuss the Noir City, its setting and backdrop, and also the cultural (WWII) and institutional (the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, and the Production Code Administration) influences on the subgenres. An analysis of the low budget and series film noirs provides information on those cult classics. With over 200 entries on films, directors, and actors, the Encyclopedia of Film Noir is the most complete resource for film fans, students, and scholars. Hot War, Cold War & Beyond, Tales from the Trenches of the 20th Century

$36.87

The last three-quarters of the Twentieth Century probably had more life-changing events than all previous history. Austin Goodrich reflects on the role he played in driving this history to a successful conclusion in the interest of all he believed in. From a quiet street in a quiet middle-class midwestern city, Austin was thrown into the cauldron of World War II as an infantry man known in the old days as a gravel-clutcher. After serving in both the European and Pacific Theatres in the 86th Blackhawk Division, Goodrich pursued his WWII promise to serve the cause of world peace by joining the Central Intellegence Agency. The rest is history as told by one who participated in his country”s first line of defense as a CIA case offi er serving for most of his 25 years under non-official (deep) cover.

 Letters from Vietnam

Letters from Vietnam

$15

No heroes, everyone did their part, and everyone was scared to death. They are the words of soldier Mark W. Harms in 1968, summing up his combat experience during the Vietnam War. His stunning letter home is just one of hundreds featured in this unforgettable collection, Letters from Vietnam. In these affecting pages are the unadorned voices of men and women who fought-and, in some cases, fell-in America’s most controversial war. They bring new insights and imagery to a conflict that still haunts our hearts, consciences, and the conduct of our foreign policy. Here are the early days of the fight, when adopting a kitten, finding gold in a stream, or helping a local woman give birth were moments of beauty amid the brutality . . . shattering first-person accounts of firefights, ambushes, and bombings ( I know I will never be the same Joe. -Marine Joe Pais) . . . and thoughtful, pained reflections on the purpose and progress of the entire Southeastern Asian cause ( All these lies about how we’re winning and what a great job we’re doing . . . It’s just not the same as WWII or the Korean War. -Lt. John S. Taylor.) Here, too, are letters as vivid as scenes from a film-Brenda Rodgers’s description of her wedding to a soldier on the steps of Saigon City Hall . . . Airman First Class Frank Pilson’s recollection of President Johnson’s ceremonial dinner with the troops ( He looks tired and worn out-his is not an easy job ) . . . and, perhaps most poignant, Emil Spadafora’s beseeching of his mother to help him adopt an orphan who is a village’s only survivor ( This boy has nothing, and his future holds nothing for him over here. ) From fervent patriotism to awakeningopposition, Letters from Vietnam captures the unmistakable echoes of this earlier era, as well as timeless expressions of hope, horror, fear, and faith. From the Hardcover edition.

Booms and busts have been the lifeblood of Singapore since Sir Thomas Raffles hacked back the jungle in the 19th Century to found a successful trading post of the British Empire. The island would later become an iconic battlefront of WWII and a paragon for Asia”s emerging economies. In-between the soaring constructions and dusty demolitions remain the ethnic enclaves founded by Raffles centuries before; island microcosms of south-east Asian culture and cuisine. In the city, the town planners have been hard at work ever since a Georgian-style multi-ethnic community was outlined in the original Jackson Pan. In the country, only the shady rural fields and tracks of Pulau Ubin recall more bucolic times of just 60 years ago. Like the state”s monuments, her beaches and lush backwaters are unusually pristine. Walk the streets of this metamorphosing country and wonder at its fortune.
