It began as a simple superhero parody: William Katt (Pippin!) starred as Ralph Hinkley, a sweet-natured high school teacher in Los Angeles, suddenly visited by extraterrestrial beings amid a desert field trip. The aliens gave Ralph a red flying suit, which endowed him with the ability to fly, become invisible, see through walls, and perform a number of other incredible feats. Unfortunately (herein lay the comedy), Ralph lost the suit’s instruction booklet not long after the initial visitation, which led to a series of outrageous misadventures in mid-air – with the character plummeting into walls, falling into bushes, and generally flailing about helplessly. A friend of Ralph’s, the FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) persuaded him to use the suit to fight crime; standing in the wings and offering her support was Ralph’s gorgeous girlfriend, attorney Pam Davidson (Connie Sellecca). The series (as indicated) suffered from several now-notorious problems including an alleged lawsuit threat and a temporary overdub to work around an embarrassing issue related to the Ralph character’s last name, but still racked up a very large and loyal cult following for three seasons. A Real American Hero $5.93 This made-for-TV actioner was designed as the pilot for a series based on the popular Walking Tall films of the 1970s. This time out, a young Brian Dennehy is cast as the stick-wielding, scrupulously honest Tennessee sheriff Buford Pusser (played in the films by Joe Don Baker and Bo Svenson), with Forrest Tucker repeating his role from Walking Tall: The Final Chapter as Pusser’s father. After chasing down a speeding car, Pusser is disgusted to find that its teenaged occupants (two of them dead, two blinded for life) are stoned out of their minds on bad bootleg hooch. Bypassing due process and other such legal niceties, Pusser goes on a one-man rampage of destruction in order to square accounts with the evil disco owner-cum-moonshiner responsible for the tragedy. Sean summons up his powers to combat Crane, who then reveals his wild card — a second Guyver module found aboard the ship, which transforms Crane into a powerful and malevolent super-Guyver. A Hero to His Fighting Men: Nelson A. Miles, 1839-1925 $26 Nelson A. Miles began his military service as a volunteer officer in the Civil War. He later earned the appellation the idol of the Indian fighters and capped his controversial career by serving as Commanding General of the Army from 1895 to 1903. Without the benefit of a college education, Miles attained the rank of major general of volunteers two months after his twenty-sixth birthday. At the close of the Civil War, he was Jefferson Davis’s military jailer; he then served with the Freedmen’s Bureau in North Carolina. On the frontier, he won a series of victories against the Kiowa-Comanches, Sioux, Nez Perce, Bannocks, and Geronimo’s band of Apaches. His skillful management of the Messiah outbreak of 1890 ended the Indian Wars. Miles also commanded the Army during the Spanish-American War and was involved in the late-nineteenth-century Army reforms. During his long and distinguished career, Miles made numerous enemies, including Theodore Roosevelt.
